My 1993 J-30 has smoke coming from between steering column and steering wheel, smells like transistors burning and seems to be related to the turn signal, when the signal is off I can still hear the clicking sound but the signal is in the off position and the indicator lights are off. and it happens more often in the warmer weather, if anyone can tell me for sure what the problem is I will be eternally greatful

How long has it been doing that? The reason I ask is electrical shorts usually isolate themselves pretty quick and / or fail all together. Especially if things are hot enough to create odor and smoke. Possible, but hard to imagine a persistent electrical issue with smoke and fumes which has no other symptoms. Of course, this in the innernets and I can only guess from this azimuth and range.
Any possibility that your valve covers are slowly leaking and the smoke and odor are related to that? The turn signal issue may be something else entirely.
Just a SWAG.

It has been happening off and on for about a year. The smoke is definitely coming from were the steering wheel joins the column, when it happens it can be seen, it looks like native American smoke signals, and as I said it only happens in conjunction with the sound of the signal indicator being heard for some time prior. It seems like the signal device is malfunctioning and after it builds up heat from constantly running it begins to smoke, that's my best guess based on the prevailing conditions. I've tried moving the lever slightly by hand to see if it would stop but that does nothing for it.
Time to take the covers off around the steering wheel and see what's smoking. I have never heard of this problem before, so it's certainly not typical.
