  What's your favorite "gross" food?

You know what I'm talking about, that food you eat that everyone kinda scrunchs their face up when they look at it. The reason I thought of it, is 'cause I'm eating mine right now.

Menudo with a side of collard greens.

Menudo is a hispanic soup made of beef tripe (cow stomach), homony and seasonings. I've had it made from pork before, but it just wasn't the same. It's absolutly delicious and I eat it a few times/week. The mexican's I used to work with couldn't believe I (an american) would eat it! I brought it to work and ate it at lunch one day. My friend John had to leave the room, he was getting sick just thinking about it

aint' nothing wrong with greens and brussel sprouts.

I don't care for chicken livers...it's like eating some kinda weird meat paste.

gizzards...eh...the smell like hell when you cook them.

"Now you may ask if I regret it, if I would do it differently if I could, if I would take it back. NOT A CHANCE!!!!! I went for it. I put it all on the line. I always will. I knew what the consequences would be if I failed, and I was willing to accept them. So any of you reading who might be feeling a twinge of sympathy, don't. I made my decisions, and I accept the consequences. I'm no victim. And to those who are thinking about preaching at me, don't bother. I won't hear you. I Love kimchi.........LOVE IT

I buy Kimchi in 1 gallon jugs at Lotte, lol.

Oh, and +1 to the greens and brussels sprouts.

I also LOVE most offal, when properly prepared. This includes the above-mentioned chicken livers, but I also really like:

-Sweetbreads (try deep frying, wow!)
-Calf's Brain
-Calf's Liver (foie de veau) - seared on the outside and molten on the inside

Naturally, this also encompasses poultry offal forcemeat products like foie gras, which is the greatest thing ever.

Other wacky stuff I eat:

-Pho with tripe and other goodies
-Blood sausage (boudin noir, Mmmmmm)
-Geoduck
-Raw scallop
-Whale (I had it raw, only once, in Kobe. YUM)
-Beef and Venison tartare
-tongue sandwiches (with Wylie Dufresne style fried mayo!)
-Yellowtail collar (or salmon cheek, or any other fish-head dish. It's by far the most flavorful part of the animal, aside from maybe the belly).

I've never had Menudo, but now I'm going to seek it out. It sounds right up my alley.

Honestly, stuff like tripe and offal isn't commonly served in the US but people don't know what they're missing. These bits are genuinely the most flavorful and are well worth seeking out. These aren't considered "strange foods" in most parts of the world.

Where did I say something about leeches? I've certainly never eaten a leech before.

Are you sure it didn't say "lychee" or something? Where did your read about eating leeches?

EDIT: The new little mexican place near me has a cow tongue taco, I really want to try it. I bet it's delicious.

No, you're not an idiot. That particular article was written by Ray (frapjap), which is why the comment didn't ring a bell with me, because I didn't write it.

I actually have no idea if he's talking about leeches or not. I'm really curious now, actually. Ask him for me.

EDIT: Nice to know people actually read the blog. I'm starting a new one shortly that won't just be limited to food, but will sort of encompass all the stuff I'm into. Gastrotacular will remain as a sub-section of that blog/website with several contributing writers, Ray amongst them.

do it, you won't regret it one bit. unless of course you are worried about fattening foods, then you might want to pass. i'm not sure of the proper proportions of each ingredient, definitely need to taste test to your likings as you go along.

I've started making Kimchi Fried Rice.

Get some day-old refrigerated cooked rice, nuke it for 2 mins, fry some garlic, butter, and oil (just a tiny bit), throw in your meat (I like Spam, hawaiian style), let it brown, add rice, S&P, shoyu, and then throw in Kim Chi and the juice from the Kim Chi jar.

Then fry an egg and put it on top of the rice, runny yolk. SO GOOD.

Among my favorites are octopus, turkey nuts (yes, testacles), raw oysters on the half-shell. Beef heart is o.k., too. Something I tried recently but didn't care for at a local Chinese restaurant was the jellyfish/boneless chicken feet combo that's served cold.

I don't see menudo, sushi, kimchi and the like as being that exotic because they are really commonplace here in southern California.
