Can I get any use of a Consult I cable on my 2000 I30? The repair manual says Consult II everywhere. Is II backwards compatible with I?

Consult II is backwards compatible with Consult I (although the Consult I is not forwards compatible with the Consult II, which is what I think you meant to ask). However, for a 2000 model year, a Consult I may or may not work. 2000 is the last year that the Consult I was supported, so a Consult II may be required depending on what you are trying to do.

well the consult II 'machine' at nissan will work with consult 1 cars so in that respect the machine is backward compatible, but the consult II protocol itself isnt backward compatible with consult 1 (nor is consult 1 forward compatible with consult II) because its an entirely different protocol (both at the eletrical and signalling level, and at the logic level).

Don't confuse OBDI with OBD2 entirely different connectors and cables.
