Increasing Octane Rating of Pump Gas

I read the alcohol injection article. It contains a table with octane ratings for various solvents.

im wondering if mixing one of these guys with your gas will safely increase octane rating. many of those solvents listed would probably be incompatible with many of the plastic and rubber parts used in the fuel system.

methanol and ethanol would be safe though. you can buy MeOH and denatured ethanol (they use methanol and isopropanol to denature it these days) at osh.

mix a specific volume of the alcohol with your gas, and in theory you will have increased the octane rating.

I know it is not as simple as this, so I am wondering if anyone has ever had any experience with this?

Since these alcohols or ethers contain oxygen they are partially burned [oxidized] and thus lower BTU of fuel after blending and decrease BMEP or torque.

Carbon Hydrogen [Toluene. M-Xylene, etc] fuels are a better bet.

If plug and cat fouling and deposit build up is not a concern then the organo metallics are useful....................MMT, Ferrocene, even tetraethyl lead since a little dab will do it.

I use NOS octain boost that clames 60 pointsthats = to 6 hole octain numbers! 93 octain + 6= 99 octain!?! Who knows how true that is but I ran 20 Psi on stock sr injectors with this and my knock sensor never goes up!

Just put a methanol injection kit on your car..it will do the same thing.

The problem with methanol is the combustion gas byproducts [formaldehyde and formic acid] may attack the aluminum alloys and the rings reducing the ideal operating life of the engine.
Ethanol is a better choice since acetylaldehyde and acetic acid are less corrosive to standard engine components.
E85 is ideal [for injection] to limit knock and easy and inexpensive to acquire.

sorry to dig this one up but t-butanol (tert or tertiary) has a similar energy/unit as gasoline but a slightly higher octane rating.

not easy and not cheap, also tert-butanol is solid at room temperature, but you can dissolve a specific proportion of it in gas without having it solidify.
