I'd say Orange Box unless we're counting console-only games.

Then it's Assassin's Creed without Question.

Bioshock was mediocre and disappointing.Rock Band is fun but just not "enough" to be the best. GHIII, same thing.Halo 3 is crap.Mass Effect sounds fun if it's your thing and boring if it isn't.

Haven't played CoD4 yet.

Best game of '07 in my opinion is definitely NOT Bioshock. That game is so bland and repetitive that I've yet to even pick it back up to finish it. Everytime I think about it I get tired and want to take a nap. Also in my opinion the hands down, top-notch, Xbox 360 game of the year is Mass Effect by far. The game scripting, Voice, acting, storyline, mechanics, and sheer size is amazing. It's unbelievable how they do such an excellent job of keeping you so interested in a storyline that initially, you think you know, but come to find out that the grand scheme is far bigger than just you, your team, anyone. The game pretty much allows you to play it how you want to. You can run and gun, use your squad, use biotic powers to decimate enemies, huge amount of side quests and storylines, and a convincingly realistic sci-fi future. The game is so detailed that it even provides scientific explanations for weapons systems, realistic methods of faster-than-light drives, even the physics behind the technologies. it's unbelievable how detail and epic of a game it is. You are forced to make so many decisions initially that seem inconsequential and you find out later on how huge of an impact it makes on humanity's position as a newcomer to the galactic scene. The game even forces you to choose to spare or send teammates, whom you develop a real attachment to, to their deaths. In short, a must have. Period.

Funny, I would've said exactly the opposite thing. I thought Bioshock was a really good game, just not GotY. Mass Effect got really boring and bland on me, and I was very happy that I didn't actually purchase it after I returned it.

Bioshock was competent, but if you played System Shock 1 and 2, Deus EX, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and other proper Fps Rpg's you see that everything it does has been done better by SS2 back in 1999 and there is not one innovative element in the game except for its enviroment (which is top notch). Oh yeah i vote for Cod4 simply because of all the entrants I had the most fun with it despite its generic shooter appearence.

^ Exactly. Mass Effect is a story first, game second. If you can't embrace the storyline and really get into the game, as most cannot, you won't enjoy it. The problem with most gamers nowadays is that they are looking for fast-paced, twitch gameplay that involves little conscious brain activity. Mass Effect begs your attention instead of focusing on fast reaction times or accuracy which most people won't like.

ROFL

Bull@(#$.

That's the same rant I've been ranting for years. I'm about as picky as gamers get these days, and hugely partial to storyline games. Doesn't mean I'm automatically in love with Mass Effect. And not being interested in Mass Effect does not mean one is a dull-witted twitch-gamer. It simply means that you don't want to endure repetitious mediocrity for what MIGHT end up being a good story. And frankly, having read the Mass Effect story, I fail to see what's so fantastic about it.

The extreme irony of this post is that it's a super Halo fan complaining about people who can't put down the crappy twitch games for a bit of story. I THINK you might have broken the universe there.

Not your place to say. Being that this is all based on opinion and last time I checked my opinion carries just as much weight as yours I'd say that that is pretty jackass of you.
MinisterofDOOM wrote:Doesn't mean I'm automatically in love with Mass Effect.
Never did I say that having an in depth storyline automatically makes it the greatest game ever. I said that it will appeal to some and not others. The reason it won't have an appeal like COD4 or Bioshock is that most people can't sit through a game that isn't constantly run and gun.

Never did I say that.
MinisterofDOOM wrote: And frankly, having read the Mass Effect story, I fail to see what's so fantastic about it.
Until you've played through the whole story yourself, that really holds no weight in this discussion. Et al, you haven't played it yourself, so you really have no idea.
MinisterofDOOM wrote:The extreme irony of this post is that it's a super Halo fan
Once again. This makes you a jackass first and foremost is that Halo is a good game that you have many times indicated you have a vendetta against just because it's popular with everyone and that happens to include many immature people, which is fine with me. That's your opinion to have, just don't try to classify me as 1. You really haven't the slightest clue what I'm like or what games I do like. And 2. Prior to these last 2 days the last time I played Halo was back in November, so please feel free to remove your foot from your mouth.

If that was humor or sarcasm, that's fine but it doesn't convey well over the internet. I take particular offense to people who try to classify me. That will always end up in debate and I don't find it humorous.

Yeah, it was sarcasm. I hoped the smiley would help but re-reading it does sound a lot harsher than I intended. I meant it all in a sort of light-hearted chuckling/joking around sense.

Didn't mean it to sound like it's a bad thing to like Halo at all. I just noted a bit of irony and had to point it out.

Sorry, man. I really didn't mean any offense. Very poor choice of words and arguments on my part. I apologize.

The point that I failed to get across is I don't understand the idea of "tolerating" the less-than-perfect gameplay for the story. I LOVE a good story when it's accompanied by a game that's fun to play. But I see no benefit in playing a game I don't enjoy just for a story. Story over gameplay in games makes no sense. That's what movies are for.

Still, you're right that I haven't played Mass Effect so my opinion on it is invalid.

Ehh. Iss coo. I'm very outspoken as demonstrated in a lot of threads and I'm quick to take offense which is something I need to work on. No harm no foul.

not being much of an on-line player I had to go with Assassin's Creed. Historical significance, free-climb roaming, massive explorable city-maps, and killing a mess of people...all good things. This game rocks!

Ace Combat rocked... Halo 3 rocked... COD 4 rocked... and Mass Effect rocked for me...so I guess its a four way tie for me w/ Halo and Ace combat tied at first

COD4 kicks butt...too bad the game engine makes me dizzy

Maybe you missed the title of the thread. Its called "Game of the Year".

Didn't you just get a 360 anyway? Are those the only two games you've played?

I'm not trying to flame, I just can't imagine you've played Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, Bioshock, The Orange Box, or CoD4 if you're suggesting skate as game of the year. Forza might be up there, but I wouldnt call it GotY.

Guitar Hero III, Rock Band, Mass Effect (sort of an FPS, but also RPG), Assassin's Creed, not FPSs.

I havent played the Orange box nor Mass Effect but I can say that Call of Duty 4 has got to be the game of the year. This game had a short storyline but by far one of the more intense stories in a game. The story made me feel like I was part of what was going on. The online play is great, but Microsoft being ghey half the time kinda started to piss me off. I can sit and play this game online for hours on end. But In my opinion the best game is the MGS series. I know its not Xbox related but I think it has the best story line and gameplay I have ever played. I played every game since the first one and I am hooked on it, and Metal Gear Solid 4 will be the only reason for buying a PS3 for now.
