Being a cheap skate, and needing spare keys, I wonder....

Can I just leave my factory key with the chip stashed IN the car full time and use an el cheapo to actually ingress and fire up the mother?

In short, is it correct that the car recognizes it's "own" key and will only allow entry and start if that chipped key is in the vicinity?? ( I have no owners manual). And if this is so, AND I can find a guy with a suitable blank, can I just make some cheap keys?? Rumor has it that there is a local locksmith who can/will make Infiniti keys.

I only have one key, and I cannot live without a spare or two....just my nature. But, I also get a spastic colon at the thought of dropping $125 on a Joey Buttafuke'in key.

Is there an alternative, or am I hosed?

Not Nissan per say but " Tweddle" the publisher of the FSM is. Cost me near 300 bucks. Got lotta pages to read.

The "owners manual" the one in the glove box? I have, so I don't know what they sell for.

Big deal. I'm reading the FSM and note that the suspension is about the same as the Nissan 240? The weather is not favorable for an actual look see under the car at present. But I have crawled around under 240's quite a few times.

But hey I got TWO keys with TWO clickers, no valet.

Can't really answer "oldmako's" question right now but he'll work it out I'm sure, after being taken to task by the "Download guys" !!!

I bought a disc of the FSM, and downloaded one as well. But I'm still a little fuzzy on the cars security system and the chipped key.

If it is in fact merely a proximity chip, I'll assume that it only needs to be near the car. I'll find someone to cut a key besides the dealer, and save $100 bucks for maintenance and repair. The proximity key can be stashed near the ignition and saved for an emergency.

I was just curious if anyone had tried this approach.

OK...I just found a guy who will cut me all the keys I want for 3 bucks a pop. The super-dooper, glow in the dark, spy decoder-anthrax-quasar key will live up under the dash next to the ignition. If the car will not start, I can always go bend over at the dealership. Yes, someone can now steal the car.

I believe (which means I don't know) that the chip is read when the key is in the ignition. I have read here that some not so knowlegeable after market alarm installers have used the extra ignition key in the installation of after market alarms, which of course renders the car's security system null and void.

Why anyone would want to do this is beyond me.

Just buy a key (dealer only) if you need another. Sometimes an owner just has to bite the bullet.

Didn't know 240SX had MacPherson strut front end. Thought is was more like the Z32 and G50 multilink.

I bought another electronic key for my 02 Q off Ebay for $45. Ofcourse it doesn't have the correct metal key that opens the door but I just wanted to have a spare cuz I only rec'd. 1 at time of purchase.

I then found out from the dealer that it cost $117 to "Program" the other key. Which is BS, cuz ya know it takes em like 2 seconds to do it.

But whatever, I told them to forget it. Then after I gave them the go ahead on approx. $2K worth of other work, they decided to throw in the programming of the new key for free.

So I guess the moral to the story here is if you're willing to shell out the initial $45 for a key thru ebay and then commit to a couple thousand bucks worth of work at the dealer to use as a bargaining chip, you have a good shot at having that 2nd key.

After plenty of searching I can now state the following.

If you need a key for a '99 go to the dealer and open wallet. Period. There are no options short of ripping out the ignition and anti theft stuff.

Hopefully this will help the next poor slob who needs a key and cannot find any info.

Along the same issue I'm wondering if the batteries in the clickers are of the type that slowly lose their power or is it all or nothing?

The transmitting distance of the clickers is stated to be 30 feet in the owners manual? Anyone have a different experience? Seem to be about right for mine.

I have a 2007 GM vehicle with a door clicker that works at some 100+ feet ?

But GM does also make smooooothe and correct shifting transmissions. The best in the world probably. Just thought I'd throw that in.

I found out the hard way that my remote has an incredible distance when my little one pushed the panic button while in the grocery store. I didn't think it was necessary to stop her considering how far away we were from the car.

Came out a few minutes later to hear the alarm going off.

I don't think it was a fluke cuz I've hit the button from my house 100yards away from the car and watched the lights flash.

Pretty much direct line of site is all you need to get a good distance away.

I'm not sure whose brainiac idea it was to put an alarm button next to all the other buttons, but I wish there was some way to disable it. I accidentally hit that thing all the time and it does have great range. I just wish the lock and unlock buttons had as good a range because I have to be practically standing untop the car to get them to work and changing batteries doesn't seem to help. I think the remote car starter I had installed a few years ago mucked up the system somehow. If I use the remote car starter to either start the car or lock/unlock the doors the Infiniti remote won't work until the I've used the key to either unlock/lock the doors or stuck it in the ignition. It's always the little things.

What I'd like to know is if there's supposed to be any sound/beep when the locks engage/disengage with the remote on a Y33. My car doesn't make any sound, so I have to be watching for the lights to flash. Searching the forum I found an article that had instructions for activating the sound, but they didn't work for me.

Sound on remote activation was dropped in mid 1994 so people didn't think you were driving a Ford.

Just gives you another excuse to admire your car.

Personally, I think that the silent car with the flashing lights is pretty damn scary to someone who decides to loiter (lean) on your car. The Panic works well too, but at night, that silent arming looks ominous. (I have a very active imagination)
