  VH powered R32 GTS-4 (GTV-8?)

Hi all..

Ive owned my R32 GTS-4 since feb and have gotten real bored with the lack of power. A while back I posted in a thread about a 4wd VH41 and after a bit more research have decided to bite the bullet

I lack the facilities to do a full conversion myself so have commissioned RIPS ltd in newzealand to make everything needed to fit the engine into an R32. Then ship the lot over for me to fit it myself..

I'm not mentioning my plans on any of the skyline forums as they are a right snobby lot and will just slag me off for not fitting an RB26/Rb30

I know the feeling when it comes to RB fanbois, they think their beloved 26 is the be-all engine.

I had a good lol to myself when I saw the ports on a local 7 second RB26 powered Skyline drag car's cylinder head at Lynn Rogers automotive.

These guys don't know what they're missing out on!

Look forward to seeing more updates about your project! :D

That sounds like an awesome car!!!

I love the RB as well.. but the VH is one hell of a fine engine. I think you'll be very impressed with the results.

RIPS also has an excellent reputation from what I've heard. So I'm sure they'll do nice work.

What transmission will you be using? I was not aware of the VH coming with an AWD trans.. but then I'm no expert on the VH...

You'll have to document the project with lots of pictures! See if the guys at RIPS will keep a photo log for you to share with us.

Anyhow.. welcome to the club. Glad to have you aboard.

I'm sure I'll be getting some photos soon when RIPS start work

Still got to sort out some money issues though. Banks suck!

Using the stock GTS-4/GT-R gearbox. RIPS are making up an adapter etc to fit it all

He has mentioned making a kit available. I guess it will depend on the amount of interest!

news on the project

the diff on the AWD VH41 is within 10mm of the position of the RB20 one in relation to the rear of the engine... So it shouldn't need any hacking about to get the driveshafts to line up ok.

Ive had some trouble sending him the money for it but thats all sorted now.

Im looking at the possibility of converting to a VH45DETT once the engine is fitted and all the little problems worked out!

Any progress or pics? I might give Rips an email and see if he will make me a gearbox adapter too. So much easier than trying to ship one from the otherside of the world:D

VH41DE to RB gearbox.

This price has been worked out based on a run of 10 units. You are looking at $2300 (incl. GST). This is a preliminary price as I am still waiting on a confirmed quote to machine these up.

The kit will include-
-Full Carbon Fibre moulded adaptor.
-Machined, drilled, tapped, doweled, all clearances checked e.g. fly wheel, starter motor, front prop shaft etc. (The adaptor plate is 1.9 times lighter than an equivalent sized billet aluminium unit and 1.3 times stronger than aircraft grade alloy.)
-12.9 grade Cap screws, for both the VH side and the RB side (i.e. No extra bolts needed)
-Metric Washers, grade 10.
-Flywheel spacer made from Chrome moly and supply of all relevant fasteners (This unit will be balanced.)

AWD or RWD (In regards to the adaptor itself, our mould can do both as it has a removable piece for this application). This needs to be specified when being ordering.

This kit will allow a successful mating of a VH41 (RWD or AWD) to a RB box (GTR or other). No extra bits needed. Ready for a clutch to be put behind it.

It is being built as a top level motorsport item and will stand the test of time. There wil be no issues with this adaptor, even on the big hp cars ie 1500+

carbon fiber eh, that is pretty trick...will it support a trans hanging off of it while dropping a motor into the car tho?

Finally some progress, although not a lot!

I decided against using my GTS-4 as a base and have bought a GT-R shell to build up.

RIPS has got the engine out of the donor and has finally started to work on it after finishing a few other projects.

Apparantly the diff is roughly 40mm further rearwards on the VH, not the 10mm RIPS initially thought... so the engine will need moving foreward by a similar amount to get everything to line up. A little dissapointing as I was hoping to have the engine right back in the bay!

Hopefully have a proper update in a few weeks !

Uh?

Sorry for the dumb question, I guess I am leaning something new today,
That VH looks like it has a diff mounted in the oil pan, and I did not know that there was an AWD version of a Q, so i am guessing it is from a President?
thanx

So what clutch and flywheel setup will you be using? The RBs Flywheel with an RB clutch? or will it be a VH Flywheel with RB clutch?

Sounds good!

The VH never came with a 5 speed so there isn't really a "vh flywheel" to use. I'm pretty sure David Steele has some info of clutch compatibility somewhere for his AWD setup.

Flywheel is gonna be a custom billet one to accept a Tilton clutch. Reason I've gone for a tilton is that they do a good range that use the same bolt patterns etc so I can just bolt on a beefier clutch as power outputs rise. No need to have a new flywheel machined!

RB flywheels just wont bolt up, Different bolt pattern and the idea of plugging and drilling a flywheel scares me! I've seen a couple of flywheels explode. Not nice!

And yes its a Cima engine

Could you use a VG flywheel or does it not bolt to a VH41?

I like the Tilton idea. You can have a softer peddle with multiplate setups.

You can use one. I used a Fidanza Z32 NA flywheel on the VH45DE. It just has to be a DE flywheel or maybe late E flywheel (87-89 300zx) with the 8-hole pattern... not the early one with the 6-bolt pattern.

I used a cheap lightweight flywheel for a TT Z32 and essentially a stock clutch. I didn't have a lot of coin to spend on it but looking at my power output the stock TT clutch should be enough to hold.

The flywheel is actually very good quality for an ebay item. CNC'd from a hunk of billet chromo and very light. They claim they test their flywheels to 12k rpm's so I've got a good margin. They probably are identical to more expensive ones and made in the same factory without the flashy name.

3.69:1, same as a Z32TT R230 rear or the USDM 97-01 Q45 R200 Rear. The latter is the US Cima, so it's no surprise to me that they have the same ratio.
