Okay, so I'm an idiot. I allowed someone to help me replace the timing belt without checking they had marked the positions of the pulleys.

Problem is, it's Saturday in a little village on the east coast of South Africa, and no one to help me. So I turn to you.

Can anyone help with a valve timing diagram for the VG30?

Any help would be appreciated.

Bruce

I don't have any diagrams on hand but its actually very easy to do.

On the back timing belt cover, behind the cam gears, are little dimples to line the cams' dimples up to. One on each side. Once you line those up, they'll be almost lined up for the timing belt.

The crank gear also has a little mark on it and the mark on the engine is on the bottom left (left being the driver's side).

Once those are lined up, you then use the timing belt's marks to get it lined up the rest of the way. There should be arrows to point to the outside of the engine on the belt, if not then be sure the top of the text is facing the back of the engine.

The two closer marks with go from cam to cam. This is where your cams will line up properly with the crank. The dimples aren't perfect, but the marks on the timing belt will, be so line the mark of the timing belt up with the dimples on the cam and crank gears and you'll be good to go.

I am replacing heads on VG30E after my timing belt snapped and need to know how to make sure the crank, cams and distributor rotor are all lined up in right position.

Since crank rotates 2 times to cams one rotation if I line up the cam marks and distributor rotor is pointing to #1 wire does it matter what rotation of crank am I on providing #1 piston up and crank pulley is lined up with mark. How do I know I am at compression stroke (TDC) or exhaust or does it matter?. Is there a crank sensor on crankshaft somewhere that I need to worry about? Thanks

On the crank's timing belt sprocket there is a little dimple, line that dimple up with the notch on the oil pump and this will always be top dead center for cylinder 1. From there line up the dimples in the cam gears with the dimples on the back, upper cover and this will get you in the general location of where the cams will be. From there you just use the marks on the timing belt to line them up perfectly. Match the line of the timing belt to the dimples in the cam gears and crank sprocket and it will be perfectly in time.

For ignition timing: with the distributor out you'll see a dimple below the teeth of the distributor. Line the dimple up with the line above it (there are two lines, one protruding, the other recessed, you'll line the dimply up with the one that is protruding, which should be the bottom line). Before installing, I would get a marker and mark a straight line from the middle of the rotor to know where it needs to be aligned from the top... this makes it much easier in keeping it aligned when sticking the distributor in. Note that when you actually put the distributor in this position will change due to the gears meshing with the gears of the cam. You can mark this point if you would like so that you know the beginning and ending alignment.

The CAS is actually in the distributor itself, beneath the metal plate that is below the rotor. If the distributor is lined up, the CAS will be lined up as well.

Not a problem. Good luck with it!
