Well after i replaced my fuel pump and relay and got my car started i noticed 2 things... the car idles higher which is a good thing, yet now it will take YEARS to shift, ( i'll be driving and doing 3500RPM but it wont shift unless i let go of gas or push it above 4000RPM). And that there is the smell of gas CONSTANTLY throughout my car... it's quite annoying.. anyone got any ideas?

dont drive the car with a smell of fuel, it is very dangerous, the engine could catch fire at any instant, specially when warm.....

turn on the car in a well vantelated area, open the hood, and inspect the rubber fuel lines, one of them would be leaking..... replace the hose (any auto parts supplier sells them for about 2$/ ft), DO NOT USE THE SAME CLAMPS, get new ones (make sure you ask for fuel line clamps, they are different that regular clamps, and regular clamps would not work for this application)......

the above is a very common problem with the VG series engine, i've seen a lot of posts about 300zx's catching fire in the middle of the road because of that (relitavely easy to fix, and extremely cheap) fault....

now to the second problem:

always start with the easy things first, check fluid level, and make sure that the transmission fluid is in goog condition.....

if all is good, the most likely the car is shifting late because the Throttle Position Sensor is not adjusted correctly..... make sure you have a digital multimeter, a 7mm elongated socket (or just a wrech will do, but the socket makes it easier).... there is a specific procedure in the service manual under (engine control and emmision) section, the voltage between the terminals (there are three terminals in that bigger gray connector, i forgot which two you need to measure about, but the manual shows it clearly) should be between 0.46V and 0.50V if i remember correctly.... (test is done with the engine on, and the probes of the multimeter inserted into the connector from the back, through the insulation).....

the transmission recives a signal from the TPS telling it when to shift..... if the TPS is not adjusted correctly, you would see the A/T light blinking upon engine startup (which means that one or more variables are not adjusted or a short circuit is present in one of the sensors of the transmission, diagnosis is also available in the service manual under "automatic transmission" section)..... search this forum for link to download the service manual.....

clean the sensor connectors and terminals before testing, and check for any corrosion....

I had same prob roughly a year and a half back. It was the fuel pressure regulator hose. GL.
