I'm just wondering what this $745 fee is for? Of couse I know it says destination and handling fee but does consumer really need to pay that? Is it just an add on cost the dealer trying to make money out of you? Is this $745 part of the bargaing tool?

thanks for everyone's input.

Every new car I ever bought has had this fee tacked on. It's pretty much standard operating procedure in the auto industry. Supposedly it covers the transportation costs of getting the car from the manufacturer to the dealer. It doesn't seem to vary much, whether your car is shipped from Tokyo or Lansing. It's something the American auto buying public has just learned to suck up. On overstocked models you may be able to negotiate this out of the price, but I always seem to be buying something everyone else wants too, so I don't know for sure.

Speak for yourself. The "freight" charge they tack on in Toronto, Canada is over $1400. I suppose they need more ways to try to squeeze money out of Canadians, with it being so much further from Japan

It used to be they blamed the higher Canadian prices on the exchange rate, what is their excuse now?

They range from "the vehicle is not the same" to "the process is different", etc. This is why I now own a brand new Immigrant Rogue Welcome to Canada!

Pricing of vehicles in Canada is always a controversial topic.

IMHO, it's all market driven. The Rogue is no more expensive than it's competition in Canada... nor can it be if Nissan wants to sell them. Historically, cars were always more expensive in Canada compared to the US. This is partly due to our dollar that has always been weak compared to other currencies.

So long as Canadian consumers are willing to pay the going rate for their vehicles, they will continue to sell at those prices regardless of the US/CDN exchange rate or any other factors.

Personally, I bought mine here in Canada:

1) I did not wish to deal with future warranty issues.2) Nissan Canada offered great financing.3) I liked some of the features that aren't available in the US: ie. Heated cloth seats4) I am supporting people in my local community... from the salesperson who sold me the car to the service tech who does the repairs and everyone in between.

I fully agree - when the CAD$ was at and above par - all the companies responded, and even though we are now $0.77-0.80 the cash incentives, low rates etc are still being offered.

Operating costs here in Canada are surely higher than in the States too - taxes etc.

The only thing I'll slag on the sales people here are their lame excuses. I can't imagine how any could be more condescending that to come up with a 'they're different, it costs more etc' type of excuse that 99% of us know is a lie.

It's my understanding that the destination charge is the same throughout the U.S. on a given vehicle. That's a calculated figure the government comes up with so that if the POE is Portland, Or. and the vehicle is sold in Des Moines or New York the transportation charge is the same. Otherwise, the charges for the New York vehicle would be three times the POE price.

I live approximately 3 miles from the Nissan plant in Central Mississippi and the nearest Nissan dealership is about 6 miles away. The Titan, Infiniti QX56, Quest, Altima, and Armada are made here. If you purchase one of these Nissan vehicles from this dealership, you indeed still have to pay the Destination fee. Crazy profit!!!

Dealers pay this fee regardless of distance 6 miles or 600 from factory...

the BS $45 paperwork fee that was mentioned... i mean it difers from dealer to dealer but do YOU work for free?

i guess unless you work for a dealer no one really knows how much work is done after you drive off int othe sunset in your new car.....

HAVE A GOOD ONE.

of course i don't work for free, but if i was being unfair to the dealer i'm sure he would have said no deal. he won't sell a car he isn't making money on will he? they get incentives from the factory based on the number sold. more cars sold, more cash for them in addition to the hold back fee and the bunch of fees they try to pass on to customers who don't ask about them.

it's not hard to strike a fair deal. the 2 dealers i went to were both trying to get my business. i asked for a price on a very specific vehicle i knew was on the market for a good while before the cash for clunkers incentive. the car wasn't moving for at least 2 months because that's how long i considered buying it (and test driving other cars) i felt i got a fair price for the car i got. could i have done better? maybe...did the dealer make a profit? i'm sure he did. maybe not a 8% profit, but maybe only 5%. should i honestly feel bad that i took money out of a dealers profit?
