antenna broke
antenna broke
sorry if this is a repost, couldn't find the thread if it was ever made. well anyway, my antenna stopped going up or down. when i press it it will go up very little and to retract it will only go down very little. it just kinda jerks and thats it. what can it be?

Most likely it's a stripped drive gear or mast.
I seem to remember someone having R&R'd a Nissan OEM power antenna, but I don't remember who. They're not too hard to get out of the trunk. Might be worth cracking open to have a look.

Below is an old posting about R&R of power antenna. The procedure is not complicated, provided the nylon tail is not broken. If that is the case, then you have to open the mast drive assembly. Make sure you cover the area around the antenna mast before working on it to prevent scratching the paint.

Mine was doing the exact same thing. It would occasionally go down, but usually stop somewhere during retraction, leaving a few inches sticking up. Buy a replacement mast from Joe from Scottsdale Infiniti, a.k.a. “everythinginfiniti.com” (about $26). Get a friend to sit in the car with the key on. Turn the radio off. Carefully unscrew the top cover of the antenna base. I used pliers covered with a soft rag as to not scratch the chrome. Turn the radio on, and up and out comes the old mast. Note the direction the teeth face when the old one comes up. Take the new mast and insert the nylon tail, with teeth facing the same direction as the old one came out, and gently push it down into the hole until it stops. Turn off the radio -- you will feed the tail in while it retracts. If it stops part way, turn the radio on, and then before it comes all the way out turn, the radio back off. I had to repeat the on off/feed three times before the new antenna would seat. Replace the top cover. I inspected the old tail -- no teeth missing. The mast was not bent. Generally dirty grease and an old stiff nylon tail. Age alone may have made it stop working. New one works great. Now while you should keep the mast clean, placing oil on the exposed mast does not lube the motor or tail. The dealer is full of crap. You have to take the mast out and expose the tail to lube it. Even then, after ten years, the tail I pulled out was nice and greasy! On the new tail I applied a fresh coat of white lithium grease. Maybe if the car makes it ten more years I will have to repeat this "ten-minute ordeal". That is a joke! It was a cake walk. In contrast, on my LX450, the tail broke off in the housing. Thus, before I could put the replacement past in, I had to remove the motor and remove the old tail. Fairly simple, but cautiously proceeding, it took about an hour -- mainly to remove the unit out of the inner fender area, and re-install. Just be careful if you must open the unit as parts may fall out.
