EDIT: MAKE SURE YOU READ THE WHOLE POST FIRST! It will give you an Idea of exactly what you are doing. Most importantly, read step 6 first, the part in bold, saying "Looking back..."It will probably make it easier for you than it was for me.
No this isnt a smartass attempt at a free custom title,"1)Take your ashtray out,2)Sit back,3)Enjoy."
Materials Dragonplate CF stuff Elmer's Craft BondSmall plastic container cup (margerine kinda thing, but smaller..)CardboardElectrical Tape
Tools ScissorsPocket Knife/RazorbladeLighter
Alright On to the writeup...
Optional: You might want to paint your container black inside and out, to match your center console area. I did, It looks better that way. trust me.
1) Take your container, this will be the walls/bottom of your cupholder.
2) Use the pocket knife/razorblade to cut a hole in a corner of the bottom/side of your container.(i used a pocketknife... easier because It has a handle, you will be heating the blade later.) You are cutting this hole, because in the ashtray hole, there is a bump on the driver's side of it. See picture.
The Bump:
The Hole to accomodate the bump:
2.5) I almost forgot... I cut out a part of the center console, you can see in this picture. To do this, I heated the blade so that it would melt/cut the plastic... In the end, I dont think you really NEED to do this to the console, but... It seemed to make it easier. you can try it without doing so, its up to you. after all, this is YOUR car.
3) once you have made the hole in the bottom of the container so that it can sit flush inside, you might want to make a cardboard filler to go in front of it, so that its all flush on top. This is optional, but I figured it would be a good idea. Don't worry too much about the ghetto appearance, you wont be able to see it in the end.
4) Now, use your Craft Bond (or whatever spray adhesive you have) and spray the floor inside the ashtray hole where the container will sit, I also sprayed the bottom of the container for extra bondage.
5) adhere the container to the floor. put some pressure on it for a minute or so to get it to hold well.
6)Now comes the fun part. Take your dragonplate (or other such stuff that you may use, I don't know what else you could use, but... If you're creative and have something else, go for it.) You are going to need to cut a hole in the dragon plate, so that it is as smooth as you can get it, right around the rim of the container. Looking back, it would probably be better to trace the rim of the container on the back of the dragon plate BEFORE you adhere it to the floor... Just make sure you trace it EXACTLY where youre going to need it. I went into it a little quickly, and didn't think it through all the way, but, it turned out ok. I didnt take any pictures of the cutting process, I was too occupied trying to get it to be as clean as possible.. sorry.. but its pretty self explanitory, Just, be patient with it and cut a little at a time... just trim small pieces off. Better to cut too little than too much.
7)Once you get the dragonplate hole cut out as nicely as you desire, take off the backing to it, and lay it down where you want it. You can make this as big or as small as you like, maybe just around the ashtray, or as big as I made it.
8)Enjoy your new cupholder. get a cup. pour yourself a coke. try it out!
9) A toast, to the possibility of a custom title! Cheers!
