Cabin Air Filter

I need to replace the cabin air filter in my 2001 QX4. Is there anywhere else I can buy one other than the dealership?

Or if you are real poor, you can simply back flow wash very very carefully, wipe out box, and even put a thin paper home filter layer over the top and hold down with childrens glue stick and make a perfectly good filter. sounds like i did this on mine? yes. $1

Or, can the filter be carefully washedand reused? I remember reading somewhere about washing it...

I've been trying to replace mine too (1998 QX4) ...the only problem is that I can't get into the "black box" behind the glove box (well i can but i'm really straining on the foam sealer). And there also don't seem to be any removable filters in there!

Anyone have pictures of the process or some more help?Thanks!

X4me-Thats what I am talking about. It is very weak stuff when wet, so you spray some simple green and backflush.

The filters pull out and are stacked on mine. It was a slight pain sliding out and sliding in.

On mine I took a thin sheet of home filter, and kid glued it on the surface, flat and thin.

Filtering is about air and a media. It looked to have a bypass which I covered too, because I wanted clean air. So I just check it every 6 months and I have better air.

They say it is HEPA but it looks like cheap *** filter material to me.You can buy a big hepa home filter, cut it up, and have a lifetime of filter material for your truck.

I even did it on my house with my room vent via and a thin filter. Allergies. And it does get extra.

They make it all fancy and expensive and you think that it is more than air and dust going thru filter. Thats all it is. Just dont restrict it by putting too much material or not checking it.

Cole-you pull the clips on your glovebox and a few screws and your right at it. Remember how it looks when you pull the filter out. They stack.

He has a 98 QX4 - certain earlier R50's do not have the filters and he might fall into that category.... the OEM Nissan filter comes with instructions on how to cut a hole for the filters if not equipped.... I have a set of brand new OEM Nissan cabin filters for sale, $20 shipped

That would explain my LACK of filters! Thanks for the answer! I've already bought some air filters unfortunately...would it be possible for you to type or scan the instructions for me?Or perhaps you know where they are online?

Sorry Issac, I didn't even read carefully.I washed my RX300 cabin filter once after reading the washing somewhere. I just don't feel like paying so much for this so simple filter.

same here!I looked at mine and it didn't look like HEPA to me. Maybe aftermarket.Anyway, it can be cleaned like you did, or even hotrodded.I was thinking about taking a razor blade and halving down the middle along the seam. Then I could make a real effective filter that could be swapped every few months, like a home filter.Looks to me like, if I saw it correctly, it has a bypass that always is open. This bypass is probably for people who never change them (most, and $).Filters at Home Depot are of varying quality, and one large 20x20 could do a lot if layered.Have to retain it, but it should not be hard. A bypass with a HEPA is still crap.So instead, all filtered, with 99.5% or whatever first pass!But letting it get real clogged would probably work the fan blower too hard, so it is for a person who likes to maintain.And for others...fork it over.It is pretty pathetic little filter actually. and with allergies coming, I am all about not going thru that.Funny how people will take all these allergy drugs but not change filters.

I know this was an old thread, but for the sake of next guy using search engine to find out how to do this: the instructions for cutting the older pathfinder boxes to put in the filters are at:http://www.courtesyparts.com/i....htmlI was waffling whether to leave well enough alone on my Pathfinder 1998, but this all started since my blower was making a wretched noise. So I started ripping stuff out. I took out the blower fan, and it was full of kleenex shreads!! (Boston, 2 kids under 5, lots of kleenex all over the car Dec-Mar...) I tried to open the cooler box but could only get it open a little to see in, and there was tons more kleenex in on the heat exchanger for the AC. So then I had no choice but to continue. I cut the slot for the filters and used the opening to get what kleenex I could out of there, best method was just to run the blower with the slot open (and then vacuum the car later.) I was not sure where to cut the slot, but the easiest place is the right place, the recess groove in narrowest part of the slot.After I got as much junk as I could out of there, I slid in the filters I bought (lots of them out there online) and put on the clip (to my surprise the clip was on the box, not in the right spot but sort of in a placeholder area...)Everything Works great!!! I recommend the "upgrade" to add the filters to the older pathfinders not factory equipped since junk definitely gets in there. Better to catch with a filter than the heat exchanger. Next time I replace it will take me 10 minutes. Good luck.

For those of you that haven't swapped yours out. I highly recommend doing so. Remember you inhale all this stuff when your running your A/C.

I bought this car back in 04 w/ 35,000 miles. Now 5yrs later when this is supposed to be switched out every 12-15 thousand miles!

just installed some aftermarket ones that i bought last year...had to cut the hole in my 2000 3.3 LE...at first i thought u cut the outer area...but then i just realized it was the inside area. dont seem the have a clip there so i just used some duct tape to secure it =P doesn't seem like it will come out anyways.

10 years without a cabin air filter....lol at least the air smells nice now...
