same here!I looked at mine and it didn't look like HEPA to me. Maybe aftermarket.Anyway, it can be cleaned like you did, or even hotrodded.I was thinking about taking a razor blade and halving down the middle along the seam. Then I could make a real effective filter that could be swapped every few months, like a home filter.Looks to me like, if I saw it correctly, it has a bypass that always is open. This bypass is probably for people who never change them (most, and $).Filters at Home Depot are of varying quality, and one large 20x20 could do a lot if layered.Have to retain it, but it should not be hard. A bypass with a HEPA is still crap.So instead, all filtered, with 99.5% or whatever first pass!But letting it get real clogged would probably work the fan blower too hard, so it is for a person who likes to maintain.And for others...fork it over.It is pretty pathetic little filter actually. and with allergies coming, I am all about not going thru that.Funny how people will take all these allergy drugs but not change filters.
