So im starting the cleansing process with the engine bay .. because it REALLY needs it. Im lookin at the valve cover thinking it needs some paint, and that will be the first thing i do with the bay. Black is always nice, so i hit the local wall-mart and pick up a few things, this being one of them :Its "aircraft remover" AKA "Paint striper" this one comes in a convenient spray can.

cause im Lazy, and curious, i didnt even try to clean the grease and dirt off the valve cover, i just began spraying like a mad man coating the entire valve cover generously with the stripper .It started working instantly ...This is literally 30seconds into spraying:

the bottle says to let it sit for 15-30minutes, so i went and started cleaning the motor with this other stuff call "Gunk Engine brite" GEL " which means you spray it on and let it sit for a while and it cleans forever until you wipe it away ...

so i sprayed and let sit for 20 minutes...WOW !!

after wiping all that up i went back to the valve cover ..... Swiped the front with a plastic scraper.. Again WOW !! The paint just slid right off the valve cover ..

so i wiped all the access paint crap off and shot it again because there were very small places where it missed a bit.

Sprayed it all off and heres the end result

slapped some paint on, and now im 1/3rd way done ....

Tips and Hints :

-WEAR SOLVENT RESISTANT GLOVES when handling the stripper.

- When using the engine cleaner, spray it on an area, and let it sit over night, power wash it or wipe it clean the next day, its works great.

- When cleaning those tight areas, use a Q-tip.

- USE THESE PRODUCTS IN WELL VENTALATED AREAS

- Be sure to clean the item that you used the stripper on with warm water to rid the surface of any residue left by the stripper.

i would recomend only using the aircraft stripper with the valve cover off the head that stuff will eat right through hoses or any other rubber or plastic.

we stripped most of my dads jeep (79 CJ) down with that Aircraft stripper, except it wasnt in a spray bottle, it was in a large metal jug, since his jeep had a tree growing through it when we started, sanding down the paint and re-spraying it wasnt an option, and that aircraft stripper saved us tons of time, its good stuff.

I didn't know people didn't know how to do this... Good write-up, though. Here's some pics of my ugly SOHC valve cover after I played with it for a while.

someone just let it sit in their field and a tree grew up through the middle of it. it was like 100$ when my dad got it, 3,000$ later its got zero rust, all new paint, and his motors at the machine shop right now ready to be picked up, its a nice little jeep.

Oh, no, of course not. I had to take a drill to it with a 3M polishing wheel and of course the Dremel for the tight spots. Once I got the paint off, I think I was done in about 45 minutes to an hour. Not counting the blue on the letters and in the grooves, of course. The letters took a while to mask off, but thinking back, for the grooves I could have just sprayed the whole top blue, let it dry and then ground the the paint off the upper surfaces. That would have been a little faster.

Hey guys, I'm in the process of removing the remaining paint from my front bumper (it was in an accident) and I am looking for a paint stripper. Will this stuff damage the plastic bumper? Or would it be safe on it and just remove the paint? I'll read the label before I go to buy anything, I am just wanting a good paint stripper that won't damage or eat into my stock plastic / urethane bumper... Thanks for your help!

to remove paint from a bumper its best to just sand it the old fashioned way

what grit sandpaper would be ideal to remove a thick layer of paint from the bumper the fastest and most effective way?

if the paitn is really chipping off or f'ed up start at 80 than step down to 180ish and keep stepping down to aobut 400-500ish. only do the bad spots at 80 not the whole bumper just make sure ur end result is smooth and even

Thanks a lot! I just wasn't sure how course to go b/c I didn't want to scratch up the plastic bumper... And yes, the paint is chipping BADLY if my old post is still on here I had pictures posted of the damage on it... It didn't help that the previous owner of my car had the thing painted by Maaco and did the cheapest paint job = poor masking and a thick coat of paint on top of whatever was there before which causes massive chipping and whatnot... Darn rocks don't even bother scratching my paint, no they go in for the kill and chip it down to the factory primer! ARGH one day I will have this thing painted the right way, maybe that day will come before the end of the summer... Thanks again!
