I'm trying to flush out my old power steering fluid in my 89 240sx to add some Bar's Leak - Powering Steering Stop Leak and Conditioner. Then top it off with some AMSoil Synthetic ATF. *note* my car isnt runnign right now cause im replacing the turbo

-is this a good choice?

-where is the power steering plug where it will drain out (pics if possible)?

-is this the right way to do it?*empty out PSF*run fluid and turn wheel *keep doing this till old PSF is run out and run the conditioner last

thanks

Don't know the "correct" way to do it but I drained mine out one time by removing the clamp on the small pressure hose connected to the bottom of the resevoir. I just put the small hose in a bottle and drained the resevoir.

but that would just drain the reservior wouldnt i need ot take the fluid inside the PS system itself. not jsut the the reservior. so that means there still old fluid floating around down there

This is true. I've been looking but I'm stumped, there doesn't seem to be a bleeder valve or something similiar like on the brakes or the radiator. As far as the fluid in the pump you could disconnect the banjo bolt and the fluid in the rack, disconnect the powersteering hardlines.HardlinesBanjo bolt

EASY stuff guys, there's ghetto-er/ cheaper ways to do this, but this is the easiest:

Step 1: Jack up front of car, place on jackstands for safety. Make sure car is in neutral and start engine, roll down window.

Step 2: Take a fluid pump (manual or vacuum) and remove 3/4 of the fluid in the resovoir.

Step 3: Fill resovoir back up. Now grab steering wheel and turn wheels back and forth, barely touching the stops, at a medium-slow speed. This is going to move the fluid through the system.

Step 4: Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the fluid in the resovoir matches the new fluid coming out of the bottle. I used less than 3 quarts of fluid on mine.

Step 5: When there is no more bubbles coming up when the wheel is turned back and forth, your done. Top off to full mark and put the car back on the ground. Congratulations, you now have nice, clean fluid in your power steering system.

Note: Power Steering stop leak should be a last resort, that stuff is nasty and gums up your whole system. I bought a power steering pump gasket kit from Nissan and replaced a few leaking seals when I did mine.
