Do all helmets say SA2005 or M95 on the back or somewhere on the helmet? Or do some helmets just have a DOT legal sticker on the back certifying that they're DOT legal? This is a question concerning a helmet I'm trying to get for Nicofest Carlisle. Can someone take a picture of the stickers on their helmet for me please?

KTHXBYE!

Thanks. I didn't think to look at the top of the helmet on the inside.

Especially if you grab a 05 one.....they are good for 10 years after the date, and with a basic open face costing less then $200 you really don't have to go to THAT many events to make it worth it.

Does anybody know of a common store that carries M2005/SA2005 rated helmets? I can't seem to find one anywhere. Everywhere I go, the have the DOT sticker on the back and on the inside of the helmet they have the year manufactured. The only thing they don't say is SA2005 or M2005. Do all SA2005/M2005 helmets say that on there? Would I be ok to use a helmet that says DOT on the back with the year manufactured inside?

You have options here. I purchased my last two SA Bell helmets thru Racer wholesale http://www.racerwholesale.com. I've had very good luck with them.

I've also purchased some products thru og racing. and had good experiences with them too.

A new basic Snell rated helmet is going to run you about $250 plus shipping. minimum There are many good makes out there including. Bell, Arai, G-Force, etc. Most of the websites have a sizing chart. The lower priced models are usually sized SMLXL. The fancier ones go by hat size. Most of these sites have overnight deliveries for a small fee.

Motorcycle helmets are acceptable for the Carlisle event. Those carry the M ratings. If you don't know of any motorcycle owners in your area to ask where they got theirs, I'm sure most local motorcycle dealers can help point you in the right direction if they don't already sell helmets themselves.

As Corey found out, don't even bother with Walmart or Kmart. They only offer DOT rated helmets, which is not applicable for auto-racing. You also may also see K rated helmets. K is for go Karts, also not acceptable for automotive applications.

You also could hunt for a used one on Ebay or Craigslist but I recommend against buying used. It might be cracked, the stickers may have been removed voiding their use, and lord knows the germs in them. Helmets get sweaty after use. Remember, to pass tech, the helmet must not only be at least the minimum rating, but have no cracks.

I hope this helps.

DOT and Snell are two separate organizations. Snell is a private non-profit that does helment testing. DOT is the department of transportation and only certify helments for use on the road (motorcycles). Snell is just another safety organization that manufacturer's can try to get certified for as many consumers look for the rating. I doubt you'll find and SA rated helmets that will have a DOT approval as they will be designed for non-motorcycle use. And if this is for use in an automobile, get the SA rated helmet. Many open track organizers will not allow M-class helmets. Plus the SA rated helmets are tested to withstand multiple impacts which are typical of automobile rollover type of accidents. By contrast M rated helmets are tested to withstand one impact, which is usually the one between a rider's head and the ground in a motorcycle accident.

I bought my seat through OGRacing. Good experience!

I bought my helmet through Apexperformance.net Good experience also, plus I like to support them because they sponsor NASA, of which I am a member.

http://www.racerwholesale.com/...d=563h ... ...d=561To point out a few...There are plenty of name brand helmets under $250

I did goto a local shop, but my open face Pyrotech helmet was less then $180 after all taxes and what not...Maybe not the fanciest or greatest helmet, but you can get plenty of different helmets for under $200 that are fully certified, even close faced ones.

If you can get an SA one for only a little more it may be worth it....M is fine for most stuff, but it would suck to have to re-buy again if you ever became more ambitious....

On the subject of helmets, gotta couple of questions regarding motorcycle.

First of all, they sell "novelty" and dot helmets. My buddy just got a Harley and wants to get a helmet.

He got a DOT helmet off of ebay (HCI?) in the german style. It makes him look like a mushroom head.

Now he and I went to a motorcycle store and he compared the DOT and the novelty helmets (same style). The DOT had MUCH thicker padding, actually it feels/looks like heavy styrofoam.

The novelty helmet only had a bit of padding.

He went with the novelty helmet and bought a DOT sticker.

Isn't this rather dangerous and stupid? To me, the novelty helmet is not much safer than not wearing a helmet due to the fact that there really is no shock absorbing material between the outer shell and your skull.

Is it me or is style that important to people?

Unfortunately, yes. For some people, style and personal freedom overtakes common sense. What surprises me more is that there are actually states (like PA) that will ticket you for not wearing a seatbelt in a 2 ton car, yet make wearing helmets optional on motorcycles. Go figure.
