After the unusually long and cold winter here in Chicago, we have finally fixed the 240 and it is back in commission. After the battery tipped over in the back of the trunk, the injectors were rendered useless. Replaced them with a new set of 550cc Deatschwerks injectors. Props to them on their customer service and quality products. We also installed the BRM exhaust, sounds good. Now all I have to do is recirculate the dump pipe back into the exhaust because it sounds terrible under b00st...

Here are only a few pictures and a cheap video showing off the AFRs and an in/out sound clip of the exhaust. Don't too much, the camera is ****e. Gonna whoop out the SLR for some better pictures.

Cheers for now,

Well this thread has needed a much deserved update. Unfortunately, today all I am going to be able to show in terms of pictures will be a tease. The car for the most part is up an running at 8psi. Today I had a little problem with it not turning on, but other then that it has been treating me very well.

This week was insanely hectic for me in terms of school so I was only able to pull off one picture worthy of being posted. For now it will only act as a tease in terms of the progress of the car. I hope to get some good interior shots and engine bay shots POSSIBLY today not that my work will be cut short. Well here is a pic of my car with my drunk friend sitting on it.

Repaired the head last night and started her up. Ran pretty smooth but I only ran it for about a minute because I didn't have a valve cover gasket. Going to order one today and start putting everything back together. I'm glad that the engine is back in shape and that I can resume progress on the car. Pretty pissed that it took so long though. I'm hoping by the end of this week I will be able to take it out of the garage. If i do expect a video and some more pictures. At this point I still have to hook up the MAF and the SAFC. Might need to get a new set of electric fans because the set I have are a little too big. Also need to install my short shifter. On top of all that I need to rewire all my gauges into the compartment. And then a few more miscellaneous things. I really want everything to be done before Dyno Day Chicago on Sunday August 12.

edit: autozone's guide is a little screwed up. Looked up the torque specs for the rocker arm in the FSM and got the following.

Rocker Arm Shaft Bolt......... 27 - 30 ft. lbs

As of July 1, 2007

We took off the valve cover today to inspect the valves and see if they were causing the 3rd and 4th cylinder problems. It turned out that the threads that these bolts go into....

are screwed up (no pun intended). So the bolts weren't holding down the valves too well (when i try to tighten the bolt it just keeps turning). Not sure what could have caused this, nonetheless, I am going to try and re thread then use a heli-coil. See how much better the engine will run. Funny that we went through all that work to figure this out and all we actually needed to do was take off the valve cover. Yet another lesson learned...

Pretty much after lots of tests the engine is not in a good enough shape to keep. The fourth cylinder is not working and also the compression is not great on the motor (150). The weird thing is that it used to be that the 3rd cylinder would not fire. Then out of nowhere one day the problem decided to move to the fourth. So the third cylinder started working but the fourth stopped. At this point the problem has stayed on the fourth. Also, the engine has a lot of miles on it so right now I'm searching for another one. The tests that I have done so far to try and diagnose the problem with the fourth cylinder not working are the following...

- 3 compression tests- replacing the injectors- replacing the distributor/adjusting the timing- replacing the spark plugs- ecu worked on a previous SOHC (without the ZIF socket which might of screwed things up)- boost gauge shows that there is no vacuum leak.

Wide band also gets a constant reading of 14.6-14.7. Some possibilities for the fourth cylinder not working are problems with the valves or a problem with the ECU because although it worked on a previous SOHC , there is a possibility that the chipping process could have screwed something up. Even if I get the engine running on 4 cylinders, it is in too bad of a shape for me to feel that it is reliable enough to be a daily driver. Maybe, after I get another engine, I will rebuild this one. For now, I am in search of a reliable SOHC.

Well I've come with a few more pictures and a bit of unfortunate news. We finally finished the project...so we thought. We tried starting the engine up and after a few cranks the car turned on but the idle was bad and would bog out. We unhooked the N60 MAF that we wired up and the engine idled well in "limp mode". Then we found out the engine is only running on 3 cylinders.

The day ended a bit tragically for me there. Today I am going to try to put the stock MAF on and possibly play with the distributor a bit and see if the MAF or ignition system is causing the 3rd cylinder not to fire. When we did a compression test on a cold motor we had 150 across the board so I am somewhat skeptical about the engine being the problem. We shall see after the tests today. Well here are the pictures...

Clocking the turbo

getting flicked off...almost

drilling the cat and dump pipe because the megan downpipe had HUGE bolts

yea it took a lot of drilling...

snorting metal shavings...

oil line from turbo to oil pan

wastegate work

using electric tape as a thread lock for the exhaust manifold...lol

fitting the BOV

a few outside and final piping shots

wiring the safc to the ecu

Thats it for the pictures, i thought i had more. What are you guy's thoughts on why the 3rd cylinder might be firing?

As of April 29, 2007

here are a few more photos i took today. We got a good amount of work done. Project seems to be coming together pretty well. But i'll be honest i never thought it would take this long.

drilling a hole for the 0 gauge

electric fans mounted. Those things were HUGE, we had to do a lot of shaving off with the sawzaw.

cutting a hole to get through the firewall

before

after

custom IC brackets made from some bigger brackets we found in the garage

dog and gnome

modifying the bumper so that the IC can fit properly

random shot with tires

mounting strut tower bracket

me getting stabbed in the chest probably because i was taking too much pictures and not doing enough work

here is the intercooler mounted with the custom brackets

rear strut tower bar mounted

and here is a more detailed picture of my coilovers with the numbers. So are these the tein hg's?

thats it for this week. I'm not gonna be able to do anymore work until 2 weeks from now because I have finals coming up for school so I have to study. But by 2 weeks we hope to have everything done. The only update that might be coming is a dumb little video that is on my other camera that i forgot to take with me.

Well lets start off with the parts list which I am gonna have to remember off the top of my head...

- Precision Turbo T3/T4 60 compressor side .48 hotside- WD's magical 550cc injectors- N60 MAF- 300zx Drilled Rotors- Permacool Oil cooler- Ebay Intercooler- Apexi SAFC- PLX Wideband- TCSportline front/rear strut tower bars (ebay)- Turbosmart 38mm wastegate- Megan Racing 3" Downpipe- Walbro 255lph fuel pump- C's Short Throw shift kit- JGS Turbo Exhaust Manifold- JGS KA24E Down Pipe & WG Dump Pipe Set- Altima Electric Radiator Fans- KOYO Racing Aluminum Radiator- Apexi Dual-Chamber BOV (not sure if i am gonna use it yet since I am still looking for a flange so if anyone knows where i could get one that plz tell me)- RCA 4" and 4x6 speakers- Infinity Basslink II- TEIN Coilovers

shot of the engine bay while I was getting it to run smoothly in N/A

oil return bung, this actually was not too hard (according to Mike hehe, no I helped him a little)

intake side with all the EGR stuff removed

my/Mike's baby

table o' parts

close up of left side

close up of right side

some good ole work juice

oh and I'm talking about the vegetable mix....anyways

ZIF socketed and Custom Tuned (from Mike himself) EEPROM on an '89 auto 240sx ECU

my brother/sponsor fixing up the frame after we found some minor damage while taking off the bumper support, looks like it had a little accident

TEIN Coilovers that I hope you guys could tell me the model of

JGS Turbo Manifold partially mounted with 4 different bolts haha, Nissan bolts coming soon

new injectors ready to replace the old ones

quick outside shot of the car in the morning before we started playing with the intercooler stuff

we figured we dont need fancy brackets so we are gonna have the intercooler held by the greatest invention ever....zipties w00t !

mounting the turbo to help get a picture of what we were gonna do with the intercooler piping

radiator finally came in today...yay

and the last picture for today is of someone i forgot to mention up above. He is the brains of this whole project but ironically he didn't think of using the zipties to hold the intercooler. Oh well I supose I can't expect too many things from him.

last but not least is the video of the car idling N/A with the oil return line working

Well thanks for checking my thread out. Any comments/questions/criticisms are accepted. Except about the location of Brians headquarters. Unfortunatley I am under contract and am not to disclose any information of his whereabouts. Although I was allowed to show this picture Look for an update next week. Hopefully we will have the car up and running.

Hey homey. I have a few more things I found in the garage that will make everything a lot easier. Also I'm looking into this cool device for very cheap from PLX that hooks right up to the wideband, boost, and rpm. And we can data log it's not too expensive and definitely worth a buy.

BTW Im going to have that RB20 this weekend in my garage gives us the next project work on this summer.

So far that makes 5 turbo projects in 6 months wooot wooot.

Hey if anyone has any question, on this project like maf placement, how something was done, don't be afraid to ask.

Let me tell you guys a lil something about this project. This engine in NA behaved like it was shot to complete hell. #3 cyl wouldn't fire even though it had spark and fuel, wouldn't idle for crap timing was all over the place.

We spend a whole night running diagnostics like crazy. This is not my first turbo project at all, nor a first engine I ever had to work on. But let me tell you guys by far I think I have learned the most from this one then I did from my previous projects.

Here this up coming weekend Im going to have a RB20 240sx with the swap done and stuff but it has a few glitches. The RB20 is btw one of my favorite 6 cyl engines out there. I will post a lot of pictures of the that whole project too for you guys.

But by far I think the RB20 is one of the better swaps for the 240. Sometimes Im led to believe that it's even more practical then a SR20 swap. Heh.

Dude, you started the engine with the oil feed going nowhere? That sounds dangerous to me.

well it does not go nowhere it just recirculates. I mean what difference would there be if there was a turbo in the middle of that line (Although for me that would be a nice difference....why cant this project just be done already ...)?

So Tomek about that green 240 thats just laying around. What if we went to a junk yard pick up a 5.0 V8 and beat Brian to the punch? MU HAHAHAHA.

Back on Topic.

Yeah This SOHC project is taking a lil longer but damn it is turning out really really nice. Also the feed line is recirculated right back into the drain line which is fine, and actually I would recommend doing that type of test. It will ensure that your feed line runs correctly and drain line doesn't back up.

As for the Oil return bung. It's is the best home depot special hehe, I have just recently found a store that sells nice actual return bungs which I will be utilizing on the next turbo project .

I was actually thinking of picking up a CA18 motor and swapping it in there. I know you have some experience with the CA. I just want to accomplish some kind of engine swap in my life. Thats my goal. or maybe...dare i say... an SR?

yea i can't wait to see this thing run. I have good feelings about this project. I'm just pissed that i have finals next week. BTW when are we starting the RB project?

dzieki! cap is gonna be used for the bass system. I have an Infinity Basslink II thats gonna go in there. It definitely doesn't need a 4 farad cap but thats the only thing i was able to get and it won't hurt anything. Its pretty much gonna be a second battery haha.
