I pulled the front cover on my motor I bought from NAD (as seen here zerothread/241827) to do the timing chain guides and I found this. Are these not the updated guides? They look just like the set I bought from Tyrone.

Get that on an engine stand before you dent your oil pan (or worse) and have to replace it and the oil scavenge inlet.

I could eat a casserole off that engine. Amazing.

Definitely the updated guides. Makes me wonder if the donor JDM car got a factory replacement engine shortly before it's demise? Your engine just gets better and better!

I am wondering the same thing. The driver side cam still has yellowish orange paint on it. Is there anyway to tell if it a replacement motor?

The engine has a serial number on the back near the flywheel - but as to how to cross reference it - I have no idea.

I don't know if all of the engines are made and then stock-piled for parts? Or made in small batches as needed for replacements. I think they just make extras while the car is being produced... I have heard of people in the classic Datsun world finding large quantities of brand new engines, transmissions, etc. sold by Nissan to metal scrap recyclers. They do "recovery missions" to try to buy and store them up for future use in restoring classic cars....
