Thanks, I appreciate it.Now over halfway with the 2001, and nearly halfway with other years. Oddly, though, there are nearly three times as many Versas as Sentras enrolled, and the Versa was just introduced last year. Where are the Sentra owners?

I just bought my '07 Sentra in July. I am 98% happy with it. I wish I had gone with the Versa (I have a thing for hatches) but I decided on something larger. The only major complaints I have is 1. the shifter is notchy and indirect into 1st and 2nd gear and the clutch pedal is TOO high and 2. the stock suspension sucks. Obviously with the release of full suspension kits (I hope) I can aleviate the problem with #2 (LOL). I don't know about the shifter problem, anyone else with a 6 speed have the same issue?

Are any aftermarket short-throw kits available? I have one in my Mazda. Don't know if they do much to reduce notchiness, but they can take the slop out.

I don't get it. A few others have the same issue. I can't figure out what the hell is causing it. I have taken the whole console apart searching and watching the levers move with each shift.

i don't know, i wish i had some good input but unfortunately i don't know very much about mechanical type issues. at least i'm not the only one having the problem. i guess it's not anything that's going to be fixed any time soon either if people with prior generations remember the same problem. anyways, let me know if you guys pin point it and figure something out. also keep me updated on that nismo crap.

I think the problem has to be inside the gearbox. I've installed a short-throw shifter in my Mazda, and there's just not that much to the shifter assembly itself.

I have a 97 sentra and its constantly costing money. Im on my second alternator fourth starter, new ignition, new keys cut (you know the special straight from the factory 80 dollar ones. DId I mention the major oil leaks and power steering leak. I live in Canada and the gasline I think has just froze for the third time. The seatbelts in the back wont retract and the front visors wont stay up. I would drive it over a cliff but first it would have to start ha. Maybe I should push it over a cliff. Oh I almost forgot the rotors all warped and the trunk and gas door wire mechanism wont work. The radio digital display hasnt worked for eight years. If you see a used Sentra for sale run away screaming and kiss the first pinto you see cause its gotta be more reliable than this piece of junk.

Hey All, I'm new to this board. I owned a new 94 Sentra from 94-97. I never had any trouble with it. Based on that experience and other Nissan / Datsun experience (70's B210, 82 Sentra wagon, 87 pickup, and 2000 Maxima) I just purchased a very clean 96 G20 with 109,000 miles. I'm a little alarmed at some of the posts on this thread, but then I've noticed that people with negative experiences are more likely to post than people with positive experiences. That little quirk of human nature is probably going to create a false negative impression of Nissan reliability. Hopefully my experience with this G20 will be as good as all of my past experience. The only problem I ever had with all of my prior Nissan products was the B210 dropped a valve seat while the engine was off. I pulled the head and had a new seat installed and we were good to go. I'm looking forward to learning all I can about this new G20. Ted

My first car was a 1992 Nissan Sentra 2 door which I purchased in 2003 with about 104k miles for only $800 bucks. I wish I would have kept that car, to be honest. She was clean, ran smooth, and was hella fun to take off-roading. My second and current car is a 2002 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V, purchased with about 27k miles, back in 2004. It now has 108k miles on it, and leaks oil. Obviously, I care very little for cars and machines in general. But I would say for the 4 years of poor driving, speeding, road-trips, and curb hops, this car has done me well. I came on this board to see why my car is leaking oil. I have never once done any kind of under-the-hood cleaning. Nor have I had it taken in for any of the numerous safety recalls for the 02, 03 sentras. Reliable? I would say so. My only major problems, besides my own ignorance, have been the battery cable coming loose due to it not being properly secured/fastened. Also, tires for this car are not cheap, and now my oil leaks. I think Nissan Sentras are great cars if treated well (my First Sentra being a good example of that).

Is it burning oil, or simply leaking oil?If it's leaking oil, that's a seal or a gasket, and maintenance couldn't have prevented it.

currently driving a 94 sentra with 308804 on the odometer.....only things we have done are change front main oil seal at roughly 200k, replace a couple alternators and change the starter once. The water pump is starting to weep, will change it soon. I'd say its been really reliable.

I just registered for this. I have a '96 Sentra GXE 1.6 Liter with 218,00 miles on it, which I've had a little less than a year and a half and I put the last 16k on it. My son got me started on Sentra because he has a '92 Sentra 1.6. Both have 5-speed manuals. His has almost 200,000 miles on it and he has driven it basically like a bat out of hell for about 3 years. His has had the trans rebuilt (supposedly), and a new alternator and distributor. And oyeah, tailpipe. It's been street-raced on rough roads and slammed through 4wd trails (it's 2wd) at speed and survived amazingly well. Our Sentras have stronger a undercarriage/suspension than most cars their size. His saving grace is that he's constantly looking for any sign of a problem and fixing it with OEM or better. It has done over 60 mpg below 80 mph. Both cars run NGK Iridium plugs and Royal Purple oil with Wix oil filters. You can observe better power and mileage from both. Both have high-flow aftermarket Sceptre air filters (looks like K&N) and KYB (Kayaba) struts with Cooper tires. Both have had the front brake rotors and pads replaced, and the clutch, and drive axles/joints. Both run quality synthetic transmission oil; mine is Royal Purple. Some people mentioned a notchy 1-2 shift problem - the RP oil helps that (no, I don't work for them). My '96 has 2" pipe from the cat back with a 2.25" muffler, welded on locally, about $130 with an additional muffler tip. Torque and HP and MPG are better. The forward exhaust system is still good until I get a good header in there. I have some further efficiency mods in mind but it currently gets 40 mpg running a steady 80 mph. Reliability in my humble opinion is excellent considering its miles. Besides what was already mentioned, I've replaced ball joints, wiper drive bushings, and need to get the headliner replaced (it's letting go of the roof). All in all, not a bad deal. Mine appears to have been taken care of by the first owner which helps; I'm going to keep on improving it as I can. I suspect the reason some folks in this thread have had a bad experience is due to poor maintenance by the previous owners, which can trash anything. Both cars also have aftermarket JVC stereos with Pioneer and Infinity (not Infiniti) speakers - not a reliability issue UNLESS you put in a high power system without upgrading at least the battery; then you may have ignition insufficiency.

I'll post my experiences b/c it seems I'm one of the rare lucky 02 spec v owners to like this car.Bought this car brand new in august of 02, currently 110,000 miles on the clock, never burned a drop of oil, original engine, original trans and clutch, routine maintenance done by me religiously, precat recall done, ecu reprogram done, replaced crank position sensor. Other than the the car has served me well and I still like daily driving it, and driving it hard. Interior is spotless clean and really no creaks/rattles. Plan to keep this baby till it dies or costs too much to fix

I have a 1991 Sentra SE-R. Bought it a little over a year ago with 240,000 miles on it, I have put an additional 10,000 on it since then. I have replaced the half shafts, a water pump and fixed the 5th gear pop-out that his transmission is famous for. It is an amazing car. I absolutely enjoy every minute of driving it. It still has great compression and should last into the 280,000 range if not more, even with my hard acceleration driving. I plan on upgrading and modding it some (already put on a performance exhaust) and plan on putting a new suspension on this winter. . This car is pure fun.
Blessed are the cracked ones, for they are the ones that let in the light.

I am new here but I own a 1992 Nissan Sentra SE-R and i have had a 1993 Sentra SE-R before that and I love this car. I am currently having trouble with rust on my red SER on the front driver fender but haven't had any complaints with the motor or trans and response is amazing. It currently has 119,134 miles on the original motor and trans but clutch sometimes slips. I have only replaced the alternator since i got her and she has treated me good. My 93 however i loved it but just had major problems and was beat by the other owner. I took the N/A 92 to the drag strip just to see what it could do in the 1/4 and it ran low 15's. It has some mods I.e. intake, exhaust, and just a rear stabilizer bar. Overall I would not part with this car. I love it too much. I got it with 98,000 miles on it and it has ran great and is my daily so I think it is reliable.
