  Where DA Mountainbikers at???

Check in here biotches. I've got a Schwinn Moab from back in the day, but I've beat the hell out of it so it's time for some upgrades. My Mavic rims are shot. Missing spokes, bent, etc. Anyone have some good suggestions for a place to purchase good rims cheap? I need to replace my fork too.

I've considered just replacing my bike altogether, but what do I do with the one I have? Especially when the frame is perfect and overall in decent working order?

Anyway, post up what you ride, where you ride and any pics you may have. My favorite place that I've ridden is at T.K. Lawless State Park in Vandalia, Michigan. If you can ride the trail in an hour, you're doing ok.

I actually ride alot. Im on a Gary Fisher Tassajara from a few years back, but Ive upgraded some stuff to make it more of a thrasher. Im more into street riding, like finding cool city gaps and stair drops.

Mid last year, I ate it really nasty and ended up going over the bars off about a 3 foot kicker. I landed straight on my face and right shoulder, and instantly blacked out. Apparantly my bike came over my back (pedals still clipped in) and hit me in the back of the head, accoring to the my buddies riding behind me.

So, I get up thinking my shoulders fine. I do a quick swirl of my arm to ease the pain, and all I here is CRACK CRACK and instantly felt my shoulder drop a good 3 inches. After walking a good 3 miles, I made it to a freinds house and immediately went to the hospitol. I ended up breaking my collar bone a half an inch from my shoulder, and its just starting to get better.

The bikes thrashed from the accident, Im probably just going to build the frame up from scratch. Now I have to get over my fear of eating pavement. Its all in fun though..

Pretty much sucks going over the bars like that. I've been over my bars many times, but never on concrete that badly. Ouch.

Never been over the bars like that, but I do a bit of biking. Mostly street and freeride stuff, not too many DJ's or DH trails around my place.

Just got a new (to me) 2005 Norco Manik, its nice.

My father owned a bike shop (for more than 20 years, just sold it last week). I have a Trek VRX-200, a full suspension 7000 series Alluminum Y-frame bike. I've gone over the bars so many times I've lost count. That bike is bombproof though. I also have a '99 or 2000 Mongoose Villain, and a Felt Heretic here in Germany.

Pics of some local trails in Germany, nothing too nasty...

Does anyone have any info about Iron Horse mountain bikes? I used to ride a Rockhopper back in '98 and want to get back into it again, some guy wants to sell me a full suspension Iron Horse bike.

I don't know much about this brand, but my initial thoughts are that it is something like a Mongoose and not nearly at the level of Specialized or Trek.

Anyway, he wants $400 for this dual suspension bike with disk brakes he bought in 06. Any comments?

Those bikes look pretty serious to me. I think I'd be all over that.

Ironhorse is not a bad brand, although I still wouldn't put them above Trek. FYI Mongoose used to be a good brand too, til they decided they wanted to sell at walmart and **** back in 02ish

Yeah, Schwinn went the same way. My Schwinn is from '97, back when they were still good. Now they're not much better than a Huffy.

Well, from what I remember (my family was in the bike business) There was a HUGE ammount of buyouts at this time. I beleive GT got bought by schwinn, schwinn got bought by Huffy, and Huffy got bought by Pacific (I think?) Mongoose just straight up bitched out on their own. I am also not sure, but I think GT might have been bought by someone els, and is now making good bikes again. Its a damn shame, GT used to be one of my favorite brands.

Not sure what to do just yet. I think I would rather have a nice light hardtail vs that Iron Horse full suspension.

I can get an entry level Rockhopper new for $430 or the Rockhopper Disc for around $600. It just did not seem like the disc brakes had more stopping power than the V-brakes. The V-brakes actually felt a little stronger.

I am leaning towards the base model because over time I will upgrade the fork and other components anyway, plus I will be getting my wife a bike at the same time and don't have that kind of $$.

What is Treks comparable model to the Rockhopper? Is it the 4900?

Discs will NOT be more powerfull than normal brakes. Think about it, its like, an 8 inch rotor vs a 26 inch rotor. The advantage discs give, is that there is much more control. Sorry, I am not too familiar with Specialized products, and I have actually been out of the business for a while. I suggest you also look at Haro too though. Around 03 they really started getting a lot better. Great bang for the buck from them.

Yeah, Haro was the shizzle back in the day, then they got kinda crappy, but then they signed Dave Mirra and began their reign of pwnage, both with product and their rider.

Just picked this up yesterday and started modding it today. '05-06 used Schwinn Mesa, 21" XL, 24 speed trigger shift, 3pc cranks, adj. shocks, etc. I'm pretty stoked!

Came with a set of Redline alum. pedals and some gator grip sawall-lookin pdeals

Also came with WTB fr/rr-specific velociraptors, which i'm probably going to change out

fr

rr

and the first little mod today, cut off the thin rubber bar end caps from the single pc grips and replaced them with some aluminum bar ends left over from some of my bmx bikes

Well after I bought it I did what anyone does after a used transportation purchase... get it home and clean the shiz out of it. I paid $200 and got 2 sets of aftermarket pedals and an extra tire tube.

Today I added some bling to the bike, had some anodized fender bolts left over! Went and picked up some longer stainless allen bolts and bam! I think it looks cool. You can also see the different tread patterns on the velociraptors.

ive been having fun mountain biking with an 05 marin bobcat trail. real easy bike to get going on. if anyone lives in the michigan area, i highly recommend yankee springs(deep lake) trail. only 20 minutes south of grand rapids and it has 13 miles of great trail that i have yet to get tired of. average ride time as of yet is 1hour 15-20 minutes, going at a decent clip.(avoiding the sand is hard)
oh, and i have ridden dr. lawless also, i like the "jumpy bits" and the tight s bends about 3/4 through.

Well I would beg to differ with you on the disc brakes vs. rim brakes arguement. I have used both over the course of my 10 years of riding in a variety of mtn bike events. 4x dual slalom, downhill, and XC. I like the V-Brakes (rim) for the XC races because they usually save some weight on the bike. But if I am doing downhill slalom or 4x, then discs are a must. I ride a 03 Specialized Big Hit for competition and a 03 Hardrock that has been modified for 4x and Street use or just tooling around on the trails. I also have a few commuter rigs for getting to and from work when the weather is nice and I dont feel like driving.

Just some photos...

Some new mods on the bike that i've been meaning to post up:

New rear fender (mud on your back is lamesauce)

Also added a SKS mud-x shield on the downtube, but guess I forgot a pic of it.

Topeak mini 3-LED light. Got it on clearence and wanted something really small... this definately fits that bill, haven't seen anything smaller. Pretty darn bright too!

And some self-cleaning wax Ceflon chain/deraileur lube for maintainence. This stuff is badass. Little particles of wax with dirt on it fall off leaving clean wax lube, pretty awesome if you ask me, lol.

Just bought a 2008 Cannondale F7 Disc today at the local bike shop. I've been shopping around for a ~$500 hardtail and this one was too cheap to pass up.

Just got back from messing around my neighborhood. MAN I'm out of shape!

DMoreau, looks like you're at Beech Spring park. I live all of 10 minutes from there, but I'm afraid to go until I get in better shape and more comfortable on the bike. Any other decent places around here to ride?
