I listen to so many different things from Trance to Classical. My favorite genre

right now would have to be J-pop, japanese pop music.

Since it was a poll and I couldn't add a choice in there, I chose rap. I prefer true hip hop like Mos Def, KRS-1, Rakim, older Pac & Biggie stuff, etc. over most of today's tired/played commercial easy bake blinged out crap.

That said, in keeping the the title of the thread:Hip HopR&BReggaeAlternativeElectronicaSome Metal/RockClassical60s/70s (including Funk, Disco, & Doo-wop)80sJ Pop

I'm down w/Jay-Z, too. He can sometimes fall into the commercialized crap category, but then he'll drop something like "Meet the Parents" and it's all good again. I'd chalk it up to diversity in his music.

I listen to everything, from Tribe called quest to Johhny Cash.

Went to see ISIS the other night, what a show! If you like metal (mostly instrumental) then check em out.

Broad range of music is the best way, IMO. Lets you get a taste of whats out there and can really broaden your scope.

Anything, except hardcore metal, christian rock, country, and most electronica. Otherwise it really just comes down to the song regardless of genre.

Old and underground rap. Some of its not really underground, but still old. Think Gangstarr, talib kwali, the song "still not a player". Classic rock i love, funk rock is great, and theres a few newer rock bands that i like, but a lot of new stuff unfortunatley is junk.

i second that. too much pop style rock. basically when the lyrics dont make sense thats poprock. not the metaphorcal stuff like tool (luv them). but the stuff thats like just stupid and they make a song about. "do you feel like a man when you push her around". wtf!!! who cares what your singing about. thats stupid. hopefully smashing pumpkins will have a good return. and nin will have a release next month.

Or, we can hunt down all of the "OMG I'm gonna listen to emo, call it punk, and play thrashing guitar music so I can feel less conformist (like everyone else) and more hardcore so people will think I'm cool, even though I pretend not to care what they think" listeners. <-- That was pretty stupid, huh? Just because you like one type of music, doesn't mean you have to bash on another to make your preferred genres look better. Or are you that pressed to make your style of music look better? Me, I don't particularly care for country/western/bluegrass, but I won't hate on it if it floats someone else's boat. That's as pointless as a KA vs. SR beef.

And for the record, I listen to a diverse range of music, and would like to find more good rock and metal. Since you are particularly fond of this type of music (and thus likely to have a better insight on it than a casual listener like myself), do you have any recommendations?

Point taken. I was just being a Dbag there for a second. Sorry if I offended anyone. But as far as good metal bands it depends on what kind of metal you want. If youre into crazy guitar solos Id check out trivium, dragonforce or shadows fall. If its harccore you like, look at winter solstice, atreyu, as I lay dying, underoath or norma jean. If you want some of the more popular stuff, Avenged Sevenfold, Eighteen visions or Lamb of god is great. For some of the darker european stuff, children of bodom, opeth or In Flames. For some of the just straight up crazy metal you can look at between the buried and me, strapping young lad or converge. Hope that helped
