I just installed some hks 264 cams and cam sprokets onto a new motor, i drove it around for about a total of 3 hours over 2 days and it started to get a kinda loud tick coming from the head. Is reshimming the lifters needed due to new cams or is this just Lifter click.

I didnt have to reshim with my HKS 264 Step 1 cams. Lifters may have some air in them, just remove them, put in oil and bleed the lifters. Not sure on the exact method on doing, but theres a thread about half page down of a Head Build that explains it.

dont worry you do not need to reshim them. I think you just have air in your lifters, yes they are hydraulic on sr's...the easiest way to bleed them is to continuously start the engine...start it shut it off..start it shut it off..for a good 10 to 15 to 20 times

Does that actually work? No offense or anything. I outta try that. How long do you normally wait between kills and cranks?

You cant bleed HLAs by running them like that. It's even stated in the FSM that you can't bleed those by running the engine. Consult EM-46 of s14 FSM.

You pretty much have to take em out and jerk em off.

The best write-up I have seen yet.
ILikeMy240sx wrote:Ok and as promised earlier, I will show you how to bleed your lifters. I obviously do not need to do this but for those of you idiots still sticking to HLAs can do this.

You need a container that will hold this amount of oil. The lifter needs to be completely submerged into oil. You also need something skinny to poke through the hole on the top. I chose one of the allen wrenches that I had. It is long enough and provides a nice L so I can grab on to it easier.

Submerge the lifter into the container filled with oil and keep the lifter upright. Now you see why it's nice to have a container thats narrow because it keeps the lifters upright.

Now using the allen wrench, "jerk it off" like shown in the video. Do this many many times until you see absolutely no bubbles coming out of the lifter.http://www-personal.umich.edu/...9.avi

Take it out and KEEP IT UPRIGHT! You shouldnt be able to push on it anmore. I suggest you install it on your head immediately to prevent any air from going into it again.
My only question, did you pull out the allen wrench before removing the HLA from the oil? Pulling the allen wrench out after won't cause air to get in?

you can pull out the wrench out anytime you want after you bleed the lifters. Its merely a tool to push down on the plunger to let all the air out. As long as you keet the lifters upright right after you bleed them, air wont go in again.

Again, you can't shim Hydrolic Lifters.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I think this is my problem. I just did a HG job and the motor was fine for a while. Driving up to school on Saturday, the motor started to tick real bad. I thought I may have been low oil but it was fine. Coolant was also good. So I have a few questions:

1) Does this sound like my lifters have air in them? I probably put maybe 250 (I still havn't had to refuel) miles on it before it started this tick.

2) Is it ok to drive? I just got here and don't have many tools or a place to work.

A little more info: I did have the lifters out and soaked them in oil before putting them back in, but I didn't know to bleed them and didn't really pay attention to orientation of the lifters during transfer.

I need an answer fairly quickly as I need my vehicle! Thanks in advance.
