  Pedals for heel/toe?

Is it just me or does everyone hit that "wall" next to the gas pedal when tryin to do the heel and toe method? I"m just wondering if i need to get aftermarket pedals for heel and toe-ing

aftermarket help tremendously with heel and toe. However, i'm quite comfortable using hte stock pedals. It really depends on how big your feet are.

Exactly. You foot size and how you use your foot to perform the action are the biggest factors. I find the stock pedals on both the 240sx and 350z are positioned extremely well for heel/toe (for my average sized foot).

in other words dont change the car. cut some of your feet off

My body may look beat up to you, and my tires may look bald, thats my version of a body kit and racing slicks and I dont care if you've got 22's and I've got 15's and I dont care if you've got a V8 and I've got a inline 4 cause when I pass you at the next corner sideways and all you can see is grey and all you taste is my rubber, nobody can see you in your shiny, V8 with 22's and low pro tires and my car looks pretty good from the back anyways.- Driftnslide

In cars that have cramped pedal space, a technique many use in competition (myself included) is to roll the side of your foot over to the edge of the gas pedal from the brake, rather than rotating your heel.

REally just adjust how you put your foot on the break pedal....There is so much room in front of it that I cant imagine how big a foot you would need not to fit....

So just slide your foot further up the brake so that its closer to being under the arch of your foot.

Get a 180sx gas pedal, it's about 3/4" closer to the brake pedal. I have one in my S13 and it's made heel-toeing miles easier for me.

Also, use the "fat foot" technique as described above. Keep the ball of your heel on the floor, and slide your right foot over to the right so that your first two toes and the ball of your foot is on the brake, and then roll your heel and blip the gas with your pinky toe and the side of your shoe. I do this all the time, it's much easier for me (6'0", size 11 shoe).

This is a much better braking position as well, as you have your heel planted for brake force and pedal travel referencing - you don't sacrifice a good braking position for rev matching with this tecnhique, the way you do with the JDM tyte heel lift method.

Ah yes, just the thread I was looking for. Its tuff for me to heel-toe, my leg can't get my foot into position without the steering wheel getting in the way. What can I do? Get a smaller steering wheel to decrease the radius? Move the wheel's tilt up a bit(but I like were it is)? Move my seat(but I like were that is too)? Configure my pedals?

Try this next time. Prior to your down shift, squeaze your knees together as this will help in rotating your right heel and increase the distance from your legs and the wheel. You may have the wheel down too far also. Your seat position should be set so that your wrists fall on the top of the wheel with your arms out stretched.

this info helped out a lot I have long legs and I always hit the steering wheel. I have a stock steering wheel so I also plan on getting an aftermarket wheel and positioning it closer to my chest if that helps.

AmoebAssassin came up with a perfect remedy for this. You should ask him.

ugh... you won't believe how many times my foot / toes (pinky toe mostly =/ ) cramped up trying to heel toe...

I lightly press the brake with my toe, left foot clutched, heel goes into possition of gas, then.... "Aargh!!" pull over to the side and rub my foot

I just changed the way i braked entirely to learn heel-toe. The s13 seems ridiculously easy also compared to other cars i have had.

Instead of bothering to rotate my foot, I just drilled normal braking with my foot in the heel toe position. So when i go to brake..my foot is practicaly sideways anyway so all i have to do is worry about pushing in with my heel.

Im 6'6" with size 15's. You dont even know what heel toe problems are, if i even try i have to use the heel plant method.

This helps a lot on most cars, especially on cars with fixed steering wheels (i.e. NA Miatas). However, some cars have very little spacing between the pedals (i.e. Subaru Imprezas) so I bring my knees closer together. This not only makes heel-toe easier, it also makes left foot braking more accessible.

Also, I don't know anyone who can consistently heel-toe with basketball shoes or worse.

i haven't used it yet because the car is still not finished, but in my coupe the gas pedal has an adjustable flange coming off to the left. so you can set it to be as close to the brake pedal as you want.
it seems pretty cool, it was on the car when i bought it so i dunno where it came from. i wish i had a picture so i could show you. i'll probably never use it though since i have no problem doing it with the stock pedals.
and i had the same problem with hitting my knees on the steering wheel as you, but eventually i just kinda grew out of it by moving my right knee more towards my left. give it a try
