This is why I change my tires when they reach about 3/32 to 4/32" tread depth!

Take a look at this, folks!

While not always successful, I generally try to change my tires when they reach 3/32" to 4/32" tread depth, and this link shows why it makes a lot of sense to do just that!

On the few occasions that I have let it go till 2/32" (or maybe even a teensy bit less ), it has been with less than acceptable results. One time, my Bridgestone RE940's had a belt failure on the inside edge of the tire ... at a low enough speed (just leaving the house, before getting on to the highway) that I did not end up in an accident fortunately.

This last time, I let it get down to 2/32" since it had not started raining in the Bay Area - at least not much. But, the Winter rains are now here, so I made sure to get my new tires installed last Wednesday ... before driving to Thanksgiving dinner at my cousins place. With my family in the car!

Be safe on the roads, folks! Tires are where the driving experience all comes together and skimping on quality tires is simply not a good idea.

I forgot to mention ... a simple tire tread-depth gauge is very inexpensive. Everyone should own one!

WOW!

The difference is huge! I'll be getting new front tires soon after seeing this, especially driving a heavy *** Q45...

Excellent advice, Z. I've been rear-ended TWICE this year alone. The first time happened when the girl was on the cell phone and just not paying attention, but the second was in heavy rain and the guy couldn't stop, much like the cars in the video on the Tire Rack site. Always driving new Cadillacs, I don't have to worry about tires, but my wife's Saab just got new tires before winter hits.

I'm driving a Hummer now, so the next person that rear ends me is really going to know it.

Time for new rubber on the Pathfinder. I was going to do it a few weeks ago, but I had to fix the Egg. I hate driving on low tread. Even on gravel you can feel it.

Yes! The part that scared me was seeing how the car, at 2/32" tread depth, was still going near 50mph at the point where it had fully stopped with 4/32"!

Shore durometers are devices than measure the hardness of rubber.

Tread depth is not the sole criteria as treads harden with age and exposure to hot/cold cycles and ozone after the first heat up.

Why Michelin warns 2 years* or 20,000 miles is the tipping point where failures begin to rise exponentially. Based on Arizona stress tests.

* 2 years from date of manufacture not 2 years from first retail sale as some tires can sit 6 months to a year before being first mounted.

Fixed the link to another video on that web site (I could not find the original) and added another link to the test write-up!
