dextron ATF, not the type F stuff, and never use power steering fluid of any kind! power steering fluid promotes leakage!

NO! the advanced autoparts guy isn't a chemist or even a mechanic, only use ATF, the power steering fluid is a compltely different substance, and they should not be mixed

I know this is bringing up an old topic but I just wanted to make sure I was understanding right before I went and dumped the fluid in. My power steering is low and I was going to add more to it. You guys are suggesting that I use Dextron ATF, which is auto trans fluid?

kind of a dead topic but... for the power steering fluid. use automatic transmission fluid?. is this just for z's or should you use atf for all vehicles?and when checking the oil in my car when is the best time to do it? if i check it when its cold i have full oil. if i check it after i drive around i got alot less like right above the fill line( i know it will still have some around in the engine after its been ran). thanks for the help

let's have a story. my PS was horrible because i guess it was just almost empty. so i looked in the manual to see what to use and went to advance to get it. of course, the guy said they're the exact same thing so i got some PSF with some kind of anti-leaking crap in it (?). so i went outside, popped the hood, and called a nissan tech i know just to make sure it was ok, as their opinions mean much more than people at auto parts stores. sure enough, he said DO NOT put it in and to get ATF. he said someone putting PSF in it in the first place may be the reason it's so messed up. since then, ATF only. not sure how to replace the PS unit or what to even do, but that's on the list (still leaks after about a week)...

nissan power steering requirs dextron type ATF only! as far as I know eevery power steering equipped nissan is the same, and many other brands also use AATF these days, ATF si a hydraulic fluid, and so it brake fluid and power steering fluid, each has different operating ranges, lubricating qualities and viscosity, if you put power steering fluid in a car like the Z that requires only ATF, you will make a leak worse, if you have a leak, B&M trick shift ATF has been known to help form my experience, nto cheap, but still ATF just thicker

I made the mistake of putting power steering fluid in my car once. When I realized that that was a mistake a few weeks later, I got a mechanics syringe and sucked out as much fluid I could and then topped it off with ATF. Haven't run into any issues. Didn't put much power steering fluid in. Might bleed it this winter.

Hi guys, first time on this forum.

I found this post while searching for the recommended PSF, and sorry to bring up a dead topic. So I use Dexron ATF instead of PSF, I get that part. The manual showed that Dexron II is the recommended fluid, but I was not able to find type 2 at the local parts shop. Is there a substitute for type 2? Thank in advance for the help.

I think all the current dextron atf now available is type 3, they generally don't refer to the "type" suffix anymore i think each newer variant has replaced that which is proceeded

Sorry to yet again bring up this dead thread, but... I was curious does it matter what brand Dexron III ATF you use? I'm looking online, but it gives me brands such as Pennzoil, Valvoline, Shell, etc. Which one am I supposed to buy?

I wish I had known this earlier... last time I had my oil change, the shop guys filled up my ps. (This was also quite some time ago.) How can I check whether it's begun to leak? And should I attempt to take out whatever fluid is left or just leave it as is and replace it with Dexron next time? If so, how do I drain it all out?

Thank you in advance.

The brand wont matter so much although I'm sure that youll get a certain brand that people prefer over other. As per the mixing of fluids that is a complete No. You never want to mix two different types of fluids. Let me know if you find out how to drain as I am stuck in that same boat as you. (shop guys filled mine too)

just disconnect the hose at the bottom of the resivior, and turn from lock to lock, thatll get most of ti out, if you got a lot then you'll want to disconnect the lines at the rack and turn lock to lock

and no brand doesn't matter and yes you can mix brands, it's just a hydraulic fluid

if you keep putting fluid in sounds like you already have a leak

Im gonna breathe life back into this old thread. I have had a bit of a power steering leak ever since my engine replacement. It started because of a bad cap which I swithced for one off a J30 at the salvage yard. But I had put about half a bottle of ps in there to replace it so now I have noticed a small leak on the line. I don't know what the guy before me put in there. Do i replace using the method described above? And will I have to get a new pressure hose or will the leak stop as soon as i get atf in there? All I can find is dextron 5 and 6. Will these work?

if you ahve a leak you need to fix the leak, changing the fluid might slow the leak but it won't fix it, and anything dextron is fine the number is irrelivant

I had a stubborn leak coming from what seemed to be the backplate of a used power steering pump that I bought. I couldn't stop it after many attemps to tighten the bolts. I poured some STOP LEAK - POWER STEERING FLUID [that's what's on the bottle label - from PEP BOYS] in with the ATF and the leak went away.

See PEP BOYS is good for something...

ATF is all anybody should ever use for the power steering system in this car. If it leaks, fix the leak then fill it up with ATF again :)
