This covers the install of MSD 6AL (pn 6420) and the Blaster 2 coil (pn 8203) on a SOHC KA24E. DOHC will be similar, but i have no experience with them, so adapt as necessary. To install a MSD ignition and blaster coil into a SOHC, you will need the MSD tach adapter (you might have to contact MSD, as i do not see the one i have listed on their site, but mine is over 8 years old now).

First of all, remove the stock coil and mount from the drivers side strut tower. Cut off the plug that connects to the coil, leaving you with two wires: a black with red stripe and a green with black stripe. Crimp on a blade style connector to each wire. Leave what looks like the ignitor (i really dont know what it is) alone, ive never ever messed with it. For reference, black/red is negative, and green/black is positive.

Next, mount your coil in the position you want it. I wound up drilling two holes thru the strut tower and bolting it right there for easiest access.

Find a location to mount your 6AL ignition box. Since my factory air box was removed, a perfect location was right where it was. I cut a piece of galvanized alluminum and mounted to box to it, then mounted that to the inner fender. I also painted it black to resist corroding. Notice the CARB exempt sticker as well, so those in Cali can tell the inspector to kiss your arse!!

Following the directions that came with ignition, you need to set it up to run a 4 cylinder, which requires remove the small phillips screw and cutting one wire (i dont remember which it is, just read the book). There are two bundled pairs of wires, as well as a positive and negative wire. Obviously, the big red and black are power and ground to the unit. I ran these around the back of the unit, under the radiator support and ran them both directly to the battery (positive and negative, respectively), just to make sure i got a good ground.

The tach adapter for the SOHC needs to be mounted up as well. I chose to install it on the back side of the strut tower, facing the firewall. There is very little room to get a drill in there to make the holes, but an angle adapter and stubby screw driver work great!

The red and white wires coming off the tach adapter need to be teed. Just crimp them into a blade style connector with another wire which also gets a blade connector.

The two bundled pairs of wires coming out of the ignition box now get hooked up: black (-) and orange (+) go to the coil, and white (+) goes to the green with black stripe AND white from tach adapter, and the red (-) goes to black with red stripe AND red from tach adapter.

Easy enough! The hardest part of installing it all is actually mounting the items. I would say that it should take the better part of an afternoon to install everything and have it all running.

Enjoy!

Jason

Ive actually had this set up going for about 8 years now, never even so much as a hiccup. I love it. I just did the article because someone was asking how to install the blaster coil. Definately a good upgrade once you have the basic i/h/e upgrades.

If you mean the black hose going from the back of the filter to the black box, that is for the AIV system. My car, though fully built with 10.5:1 custom made pistons and a Nismo camshaft, still retains every single piece of emissions equipment in full working order.

I think I already have an article for this exact thing. It's not that hard of an install. I decided to go the route without cutting ANY wires. If I can fin it I'll post a link up.

Why would you waste an extra $50 buying an 6AL? You don't need the limiter.

While I agree that it's not needed, redundancy is a good thing.
