Okay, I was driving my car to work a few days ago (96 240SX, stock) and as I was pulling away from a stop light, I shifted into second and the car bogged and after I pushed in the clutch, the engine cut off. I coasted into a lot, towed it home, and went to work on it that night. I got it fired up again, even moved the car under it's own power, but after a few minutes, the problem came back. At this point, it's an utter PITA to get the car cranked, I have to adjust the distributor and even then it usually tries to turn over and eventually fires up. Once it's cranked, it idles without a problem. As soon as I goose it though, it bogs down and gets close to cutting back off. I'm stumped at this point and I'm just trying to figure out where I should go from here. It's throwing no CEL at all by the way, and the last time I had it idling I broke out the timing light and had everything set back in order. So, in summary, it's taking forever to crank and once it's running, it's fine unless I sharply rev. I can ease on the gas and it revs fine. I pulled the valve cover, set the engine to TDC, and the cam lobes for the #1 cylinder are both pointed outward, which I've been led to believe is how things are supposed to be. I'm at a loss right now as to what the problem may be.

Here's some pictures showing how my cams are sitting at the moment.

Have you performed the usual tuneup?- replaced spark plugs- replaced fuel filter- replaced air filter- set the ignition timing to 20 degrees BTDC

The cam lobes pointing out at TDC is correct.

Ignition timing is good to go, as are the plugs, I'll check the fuel filter but I've already checked for fuel and it sprayed gas across my front yard, so I'm pretty sure there's pressure, plus when I fire up the car you can tell it's been dumping fuel into the cylinders while I'm trying to crank it.

You went to far before checking the basics!!

Do the plugs have a good spark? How is the distributor brush? What's the resistance at the plug cables? it had to be <30 ohms.Is the MAF conector ok?Does the car have good earth?

It's running again. I replaced the distributor cap and rotor. I'm just glad I didn't start freaking out and dumping money into the car.
