Hey everyone im new to the site. I just purchased a 94 J30 with 102,000 miles on it. I have read the stucks which helped me pick this one out. The car drove great since i bought it last Weds. The trans shifted fine hit all gears firmly. Starting today the car would shift into 2nd it would rev real high a shift into 3rd. I down shifted from 4th to 3rd it grabed then to 2nd and nothing then to 1st and it grabed again. I went ahead a changed the the filter and fluid. The fluid was dark but the pan was pretty clean from metal shavings except what was on the magnet nothin seemed out of the norm. What could be the problem? Could my transmission be toast? im hoping its the valve body stuck. Anyone have any ideas?

Welcome to NICO!!!

Does the car drive normally for a short while when you turn it off?

After that it will rev high to go from 2nd to 3rd or not go at all?

Sounds like you need a new transmission revolution sensor.

Well first thing this afternoon it drove fine. After eating at Chillis and driving home the car started to take a little longer to shift into 2nd then right before i got home it would go to 4k rpm before shifting into 3rd skipping 2nd. and it also will not down shift to 2nd either. I got it to go into 2nd once by letting the car coast at like 30mph while the car was in 2nd gear as soon as it grabed i gave it a little gas and it took off and didnt seem like it was slipping. To replace that revolution sensor I just need to drop the pan? and is there a way to test it before i change it??

A bad rev sensor would spit out a code, most likely while driving. If you know of some one with a OBD1 reader its wise to drive around with one plugged in to make sure this is the issue.

I will get it checked out at a shop. I do not have any CEL light turning on. I also notice it was not going into 4th this morning. I hope its just one of the sensors. The pan looked clean from metal shavings other than the magnet. If it is the trans going out i hope i can get one cheap from a junkyard.

Just a stupid question, but does this only happen when the car is cold?

What if you try to shift gears manually?

Or if you keep it in 2nd, does it stay stuck in first?

you know my 2 cents but i was having a problem that sounds very close to this pretty much what every one is stating. but on my car i noticed that it did it during the summer after a little bit of driving but, not at night or in the winter, and also when it did it while driving i found i could turn the car off while costing wait about 2 to 3 seconds turn the car on and BAM all good again so i installed an after market trans cooler from B&M and so far all good no problems and it was hitting 100 in the summer here maybe the soleniods are just overheating. and my J has 145,000 on it and running like the golden child

The answer is no. The J use RE4R01A same as the non Turbo Z32 300ZX. With no modifications, i look into it myself, not even the RE4R01A from the 300ZX bolt on and hook up to the J. On the other hand, the Z32 300ZX TT use RE4R03A, you tell me what the chance is that it will bolt right up to the J ??

I have no clue. Its just that i found a 300zx TT auto trans with 25k for $295 and a 90 warrinty for any internal malfunctions on Ebay. I thought that it might be a cheaper resolution to a rebuild.

Well i'm sure the bolt pattern would be the same and bolt up to the engine, but I'm not sure if the TT and NA transmission are even the same physical size, therefore they may use a different driveshaft. As for the RE4R01A that are used by both 300ZX and J30, I've looked at them both inperson, they are the same size but the sensor plug-in are different, so are the # on the tag. Trans. Model No.J30 NA- RE4R01AZ32 NA- RE4R01AZ32 TT- RE4R03A

Trans. Model code No.J30 NA- 45x71Z32 NA-45X65Z32 TT-51X08

RE4R01A from a Z32RE4R01A from a J30

BTW, i'm sure if someone can fit a VG30DETT with a 5sp into a J30, one can fit the TT auto into the J, but not without modification.

Im pretty sure that only the internals are modified, different clutch material, different tollerance etc. The case and input and output shafts should be all in the same place.

Maybe Q45Tech knows the differences.

Well for those that have done a TT swap in theyre Js and stuck with auto know what the differences are and what mods if any need to be done to get the trans to work in our cars? Im going to call the dealership today and see if the trans will cross reference over with each other.--Tim

Good luck with calling your dealership, i bet you that they will just tell you that it won't fit without even looking. First we have a Infiniti, the the 300Zx is a Nissan. Secondy, they have different part #, how would they know if they fit if they don't have one of each sitting side by side.Let me tell you a story, when i didi my timing belt a month ago, i went to a Nissan Dealer to pick up a timing belt, i talked to the part manager and telll him i have a 94 J30 and wanted to get a timing belt for the 300ZX for the same year, same engine and evertyhing, right? At first, he wouldn't even sell me the belt, he keep saying i have a Infiniti, and they have no cross reference and l should go to a Infiniti dealership, in the end i just tell them that i would take my risk and give me the damn belt, then, he call a Infiniti dealer to confirm the part #. Good luck doing that over the phone.

Well called my local dealer and they were pretty helpful and gave me a number to a local shop that works on alot of Z cars. I spoke with a guy there and he says the trans. will bolt right up but he believes the tail shaft is differnt so the drive shaft might not bolt up but can be eaisly modified to work. On another note i also found out that the Pathfinder and QX4 uses the same trans as ours and they are a direct bolt on to our cars.

I believe the rev sensor is also known as the transmission turbine sensor. I would call them up.
