when you start having prolonged drifts (10+ seconds) you will realize what i mean by inconsistent. all of a sudden they can eithre GAIN or LOOSE traction almost instantly. ive had both happen and it can honestly be dangerous. if your speeds are up and you are going around a corner with no runoff or "out" if things get out of control bad things can happen if you spin or catch traction.

its all about prefrence and your budget. my tire WAS the Falken Azenis ST115 but they are no longer made. Ive also run on Hankook's and a plethora of other tires.

as a noob tires dont mean anything, just get the cheapest you can. get 5 good events under your belt then start worrying about what tires to run.

I tried Azenis RT-615s up front and Dunlop Direzzas in the rear and that worked out GREAT. but for the most part, i still run econ tires cuz they're cheaper.

One thing you didn't mention that I am sure you meant to:

Running crappy rear tires also sucks because they don't grip as well. You have to take corners wider and slower because of them, and often end up swinging so wide that you loose a good line. This problem has plagued me at my last few events, but I can't afford good tires yet, so I'm just trying to make it work.

but seriously.. when the time comes and for competition a good tire works wonders.. i like falken 512s and hankook ventus.. wynstars are cheap and awesome too. sumitomo htr 200 is a good one.. all those are cheap tires that offer good grip but still manageable to keep sliding.

it's one of the best ways to start getting really consistent. it's nice because you know what to expect and how they are going to react.

i loved azenis st115's with all my heart, but i've been out for a while, i don't know what you whippersnappers are using these days.

but I can't lie I just spent $40 bucks on 4 crap tires that I'm going to burn up at a new oval I'm trying out tomorrow night. Might get paid to do demos there.

just ask and make a deal with garages, that way, no headaches later. plus, they are usually still free

Just like in racing, The symptom of going wide is early apexing. If oyu know you are going to be wide, You should start your drift earlier , therefore hitting the apex later in your drift.
