Supplement on removing a flywheel:

There are a few ways to get an automatic or manual flywheel on or off.

The easiest by far is to have an impact gun. A quick ziiiip and the flywheel is on the ground. If you don't have an impact gun the flywheel will spin as you try to take it off, you can attempt to brace the flywheel using screwdrivers and such, while holding the crank pulley with a 27mm socket.... or you can use this secret:

EASY WAY TO GET ON AND OFF A FLYWHEEL: upon doing a clutch swap a year or so after my 5 speed conversion, I ran into a really easy way to change the flywheel. Basically you get a new bolt (and possibly a nut since the a/t flywheel isn't threaded) that will fit into a hole on the flywheel (the hole not used to bolt to the crankshaft) and use a bellhousing bolt. Run a chain between the two bolts as shown in the diagram below. it doesn't matter if the chain is too long, the excess can just dangle. Put the chain on and then turn the flywheel to add tension to the chain. The chain will now keep the flywheel from spinning. This works great to hold the flywheel if you don't have an impact gun. Wrench away.

The chain idea is an awesome idea. Usually I've just had someone hold the crank still on the front while I use a breaker on the rear. If you have an impact though, you should be able to get the bolts off with no problems.

I would like to add some info to the S14 procedure.

I'm getting ready to do my swap and in taking some conversion steps early I found that when drilling the hole for the MC, a perfect size to use is 1 3/8th's hole saw. It's slightly larger (about 1/32nd larger) than the protrusion on the rear of the MC. This size will allow the rubber to be pinched inbetween the bulk head creating a "waterproof" seal, not that any water would get there but it'll also help with the road/engine noise in the cabin. I would imagine that the S13 MC would be similar if not identical to the S14 and use the same size hole saw, but do not hold me to that as I do not have an S13...

I used a steel pipe on the rachet to get leverage and loosened it from a good angle to minimize the flywheel spin. I didn't have help so I used another rachet and pipe to hold it from at one of the bolts. On the last one I re-bolted the one before with anti-size, plastic/brass washer to make hold for the last one. It was tricky but did the job for a poor man. (actually the air compressor plug was broken)

the best way is if you can get at least 1 bolt off, get a long box wrench and bolt the closed end to the flywheel. use that to hold the flywheel while you take the others off. worked great for me. was my grandpa's idea. man comes up with anything. made a valve spring compressor once out 2 pieces of wood and a jig saw. lol

If you get someone else to do it for you I've seen the prices go up to around $1,400.

So if i find a mint s14 auto owned by a grandpa or grandma, this swap will make it exactly like a manual? its the same setup and parts how the manual is? it wont have any problems once i swap for a sr20 and new trans later?

I have seen people buy complete swaps for between 200 to 500 bucks. Any more than that, and you are getting ripped off. Welcome to Nico!

hey guys, I seen this topic and was already wanting to post a topic on tranny swaps. First, I am assuming that the creator of this post wants to know the price on swapping a manual tranny into their 240. Of course it all depends on whos doing the job. Some guys can charge you an arm and a leg, and if your lucky some guy will want to sleep with your girl either way its one hell of a price for the job. The tranny alone can cost from a few hundred to even a grand or so.

My question is though, can the trannys from 89-99 intermingle? Cause right now my auto tranny on my 89 240 is shot, and want to swap a KA24de later on.

99?? 98' was the last year.

Yes the trannies will work on each other - the s14 ODBII has the crank angle sensor ontop the bellhousing - so there is a hole up there

where the s13 does not use this sensor - you can swap bellhousings the gear box is the same - the rear housings is the same

you can no use the auto speed sensor in the 5 speed - and you can not use the s14 speed sensor on a s13 or vise versa

It cost me around $1500 for my swap - but I did alot of upgrades while I was doing it all - plus I installed the 5 speed brake booster/pedal ect I went the extra mile to do it right.

You will need to use the s14 VSS (vechicle speed sensor)
- if its a ODBII car then you will not have the crank angle sensor - as the s13 tranny does not have the hole on top the bell housing for it - car will still run and all - but it may throw a code and keep you from passing emissions test.

Thats about it really

No problem man - base model doesnt matter in this case

I few people have had issuses with the auto TPS on a 5 speed swap - but I have never had any issues - but I assume the problem does exist.

The ones I have heard it from are in 97-98 Kouki models
