I got the usual rattle goin on here (right guide is gone) so i pulled the valve cover. The chain looks good to me but i dont really see to many chains, does it look good?If so should i just go ahead and change the guide and tensioner only? The area is clean down there, like its been worked on recently, mabey just a faulty guide, but i dont wanna pull the chain or gears if i dont have to, what do you guys think?More pics here V V V V Vhttp://www.vidilife.com/index....ion=1ThanxRyan

You will need a new guide. The guide is on the right, as you look down, and the tensioner is on the left. Most kits come complete with chain, cam sprocket, crank sprocket, tensioner and updated guide. While you dont have to remove the chain/sprockets to replace the tensioner and/or guide, you still have to remove the front cover, so you may as well replace it all while you are there.

I havent done this job with the motor in the car, i did mine when i built my motor (tensioner was sitting in the pan in about 3 pieces), but i can help you through it if u have questions or need advice.

Or u can just give me your car and i will do it myself!! (just kidding of course, love the pignose!)

I'm doing the same thing right now, except on a dual cam. I took off both the guides, they were completely eaten away by the chain. My question is, how loose should the chain be? Mine is a little loose, and I don't know if that's normal, or if it should be tight.

If you're gonna skimp on the chain, you'd need to inspect the chain. If there are any cracks or wear on the links, you need to replace the chain which can set you back a few more days. The new guides need the new bolts. You don't always need new sprockets though.
