  CA20DET build!....pics - Update

Hey guys, was doing some wiring on my mates car the last few days.....and thought you guys would like to see some pics of his engine....

its a CA20 block, with the CA18DET head.
has modified forged 4G63 conrods
forged pistons
custom inlet and exhaust manifolds.
standard CA20 crank
turbo is a GT30/35 ( I think ).
both the inlet and exhaust manifolds should be finished this week sometime, so will take more pics then.

R32 4spots

its in a Datsun 1600......that big hole is for the intercooler

inlet manifold in the build.....

Decent sized looking ports ( yes its very rough.....needs to be finished yet )

theres the approximate position of where the turbo will sit

They should like like mini RBs, because for all intents and purposes, they are. They share the same block and head design, as well as some internal components (lifters, etc).

DAMN that is going to be a monster of a motor! If you could, get us as much info on the CA20 as you can, as I am sure that many are as interested as I am on how to go about doing it practically (damn you Tomei!).

Knowing there are motors like that out there in the wide, wide world helps me sleep at night...

Its not mine....its a mates.
his engine builder reckons he should get around 450RWHP from it.

I'm back down there probably Monday after work, so will ask him some more questions on it.

what do you want to know?

Mostly, what crank modifications, rod modifications, and piston specs. Also, any info as to where he got his parts, and if they will ship to the US

Yes the Ca and RB share alot, and have alot of the same basic design. However, the block height, bore and stroke of the motors are way different, (square vs. undersquare), and if you compare the rb25 to the ca18, you get 86mm x 71.7mm, while ca is 83mm x 83.6mm.

CA has app. 452cc per cylinder, while Rb has about 417cc.

There are 2 sizes of 4g63 rods. They are identical apart from the width of the big end. Any rod from evo1 onwards has the narrow big end. You need to take about 0.9mm off both sides i think. Dont have my pc to check the specs i have saved.
They are 150mm long and have 22mm pin, maybe 21mm, i cant remember either. I had a set narrowed to run on a ca18det crank in a ca20 block with 84.5mm honda pistons from 2l crv with b16a head
You can run the factory evo bearings

ok....hes using a standard CA20 crank....and VR4 rods machined down ( so I assume these are the first gen rods you speak of? )....
CA20 crank......and using some kind of toyota cam belt that fits the taller block.

and custom spec Wiesco pistons

you used a B16 head on a CA18 or pistons for a B20 using a B16 head so you ge the correct valve releifs etc..

and evo bearings work (with standard CA18 crank and rods too???), man if so - thats great cause we can now use all those slick super trick coated evo bearings.

You can use 84.5mm pistons from a b20 honda that has been fitted with a b16a head. Go to http://www.theoldone.org or something, they sell a million sizes of trick pistons to suit any possible combination of honda you could think of. There are about 4-6 different crown sizes available off the shelf, so you can easily find something to fit.

The evo1 onwards rods are 150mm with 26.4mm wide big end that needs to be narrowed to 24mm CA crank. the small end is 22mm so the honda pistons need to be bored from 21 to 22mm pin, or you can get some trick wrist pins made up

I am using Forged I beam Pauter rods for a ca20e (yes they make them) with the ca crank, and a set of custom pistons 15 mm shorter and flattened (top) for a ca20e (I did have to send my head out to arias for them to find the angle of the valves etc....)

Heres my delima, what rpm is acceptable for this block without having a crank girdle?

And What is the part # for the Toyota Timming belt you guys are using for the taller block?

The Honda piston/ DSM rod combo is engenious, wish i had known about it before i started building my frankenstein.....(I love it we've evolved to honda tuner status....We can swap heads on different blocks....lol)

I'll try find out 2moro what part number the belt is.....but hes not even sure that it is a Toyota one....

I forgot CA20s didnt have a crank girdle......wonder how thats going to go with the power hes hoping for......hope nothing breaks!

evolved to honda??? weve ALWAYS beena able to swap heads on different blocks!

The old Datsun "L-series" engine is a non-crossflow single cam carbed engine.....and a lot of people bolt on a "Z18ET" head....which gives it crossflow EFI turbo.

wierd as it sounds....I also know a guy that is putting a mazda MX5 head ( DOHC EFI )....onto a Datsun "A-series" engine ( pushrod motor!! ).

so the head swapping thing sure isnt new for datsun/nissan tuners.....

i think what he is saying is that you need pistons to fit a b20 motor thats been fitted with a b6 head, not a ca18det fitted witha b6head...

all this info is very interesting and came a month too late, we had a spare block and spare 4g6 rods laying around we could have done some experimenting.

ka cranbk girdle wont fit, the bore spacing is too different.
ca18 crank girdle will bolt on using ca20 caps and ca18det main bolts and will clear the ca20 crank. The early crank girdle from ca18det (late u11) wont fit

i got a quote from econobelt in the states for a good price. they were going to cut down a 20mm belt to 19mm(3/4) to fit ca.

you need to drill the block on the ca20 in the same spot as the idler pulley on the ca18. drill to 8.6mm and tap to m10.

you can also use a cut down h22a honda timing belt

Update.....We finally got it started tonight....running a Link ECU, that hasnt been tuned yet, so was running real rich.
and for some reason, all 4 coils spark at the same time every time you switch the key on.....(without starting engine).
There must of been some fuel vapour left in there......and BOOM!
haha, wasted the intake manifold!
