I have done it before. Its very tricky..I allmost went to the hospital for it. The springs hold alot of tension...I am atempting it again today some time. I will write down all the the instructions and post them for you. BUT BE CAREFULL PLEASE. SPRINGS HURT!

anyone thought about replacing the springs for shocks(right word??)?? basically, ones strong enough so that when you press the trunk release button, the trunk slowly pops up(or quickly)?? ive put some thought into this, and somewhat planned out a few different ways to do this, i just wanna know if im the only one that has thought of this. then maybe do a flip flop trunk conversion to it. only problem is that im low on fundings to do this.

They're torsion bars, like hold the front end of a VW out of the dirt. Keep in mind they hold up, what, 40 pounds of trunklid across a 2-foot lever, using two inches of bar? They're strong. Lots stronger than fingers. Gas struts could be cool, but of course you're up against the designing. You might devise something clever using bellcranks so that the struts remain behind the trim carpeting. Please don't do a flip-flop. We aren't on that side of town.

i have kinda derrived a way to do it so that the struts will be hidden by the trim carpeting. another way, would be mounting them to the bottom of the car, and push up, and just cut a little area away from the plastic part where the arms close into. but i just gotta get time to go get the parts i need to accomplish this.

or, would it be possiable to somehow increase the force given off by the torsion bars?? like just enough to make it push the trunk up, but not to keep it from closing. or is this too much of a task to do??

I've not been in to that part of the J yet, but it's typical of Datsun to have more than one location to mount the ends of the torsion bars. I don't know if they'll have enough choice, if any, to get the trunk lid to raise on its own. They probably over-center at closing so that latching force is reduced.
