The plastic piece with the rods will not come out. The rung that held the c clip in is a lip and the plastic piece won't go any further up. I'm only doing a short shifter because someone sawed off the shifter to make it a fake short shifter and got rid of the threads. When I went to put a greddy on, I found the old one was a clamp on knob. I guess I'm abandoning this and going to the junk yard.

Good point, I don't know how BTown got it off the stock shifter either, but when I did this on my old hatch I just installed the short shifter without it, this is what what I did

you could use thread lock. but it has locking washers so i dont really see the point.

from lookin at this, i now know i'm missing a wave washer that plastic retainer thingie...

is it a good idea to put some blue thread lock on the bolts that hold the C-clamps down? from the past threads about this type of short shifter, i heard that sometimes they'll become loose n pop off!

they should be the same depending on what year your 180sx is. if u have an sr the transmission is essentially the same, if u have a ca, i have no idea

Will this also work for nissan 180sx? I was just wondering if theres a differences b/w the nissan 240sx shifter to the nissan 180sx shifter. I bought the same V1 Short shifter and when I took out my old stock one on my 180sx, I noticed that it had a shorter end compared to the V1 short shifter and when I put the v1 s.shifter it had a bit of space on the ball joint part, but when I put back my stock shifter it fits perfectly... now is that normal or perhaps I bought the wrong type of V1 short shifter? here is the picture of what I bought.

When I first put in my short shifter I did it the same way you did. Then I had to drop everything out for the sr swap. I just happened to run into this thread and decided to put the shifter back together out of curiosity. Now only if I can get my sr running...

Starting with an empty hole.

Put in the spacer.

Like so.

Insert wave washer.

Insert the plastic piece with the rods

Insert the lower half of the shifter, make sure you lube the white nipple.

Now the plastic retainer. If you have a gasket to cover the plastic parts insert now. I don't have it for some reason, but I'm doing without it :-/

Yea Ben I just wanted to confirm once again that Greeneyes is correct. You'll be hurting your synchro slider shaft using the spacer in that position as of now.

I have the same style shifter. I love it, then again, I've never tried anything nicer. But I would reccoment you use the stock bushing that goes on the little ball. It's much nicer for fitment and won't break like the ones that usually come on these shifters.

I just paid $180 shipped for my BM shifter. Cheapest i've found around is $210 shipped or so. Got mine through a vendor that sells BM shifters on Honda-Tech. =)

i know lol but u forgot i'm lazy. i was also curious to see what he paid for it as opposed to what they're going for. imo i woudl have gone with teh bm its more but worth it. i dont like these style short shifters so maybe i'm biased.

the price is about 70 dollars for one of these compared to bm for 250, or 230 which was the cheapest i found

great write up man. I had the same fidanza one in my car for about a week and got sick of it casue it felt weak and just didnt seem like it would last and got a BM. i must say the bm is a much better unit.

WOAH, the metal bushing goes underneath!... u put that in first, then the plastic yellow piece with the metal cylinders, then the yellow plastic washer/bushing.

the metal goes on the bottom to make up for the higher position of the metal ball on the short throw.

Those washers are a pain in the a$$, i think they mess with the trany staying in reverse when engaged.

so from the bottom, up:

i used to have one of these and this is the proper way to do it. your way will leave the small shifter bushing about .5" too far into the trans, not letting the bushing interface with the trans fork piece, but rather letting the "wrist" of your lever make the contact.

it wouldn't have worked that way. i tried it. first off there is no wave washer.
the aluminum ring has to go on top, because the hole on the top plate hole isnt small enough to hold the shifter and every thing in. i can take it apart to show you.
the aluminum ring acts as a washer. from what i can tell. and if it was on the bottem everthing would not be held in place.

i dont have time to mess around wiht it today. but i will later. this week

so from the bottom, up:

aluminum spacer
wave washer
stock white lower ball pivot-y plastic ring

Just check the FSM for the correct amount. Thats what I did when I filled mine, drained it and put it in from the top.

it feels alot stiffer then stock. and alot tighter. but i think it will loosen up some when i fill the tranny with new fluid. which is one of the next things i will do. i might end up pulling the shifter back off to fill the transmission. s o i dont have to do it from under the car. but we will see.

i am worried about over filling it. s o if i new the correct amount. then i could do it trough the shifter hole and not worry about it.

V1 SHORT SHIFTER INSTALL

Installing this was a little confusing for me at first and i did alot of searching so i decided to write on here. for every one else.

I am installing new lower dust boot and the circuit sport short shifter, all the v1's are the same wether it is meagan racing for fidanza. so following these instructions should help with any of the other installs

things you will need:
V1 shifter kit
graphite lube
5mm allen wrench
C clip pliers
10mm socket w/ ratchet or phillips screw driver.
replacement lower dust boot. - you can get them at your local nissan dealership

1. You will need to remove your radio trim along with shift knob and shifter boot. ALSO MAKE SURE THE CAR IS IN NEUTRAL

2. you will end up with something that looks like this.

3. you will take all four 10mm bolt off holding upper dust boot. you can use the screw driver or socket and ratchet for this part.
when you remove it you will have this

4. next you need to remove the lower dust boot. you can cut it off since you will be installing a new one.
mine was torn a little already so it slid off easily.

5. no you will need to remove the C clip holding the short shifter in.
using these

you reach in. inserting each end of the pliers into each of the holes on the c clip and squeeze,

should be able to pull it out no problem

this is the c clip removed

6. now if you remembered to put your tranny in neutral you should be able to slide the stock shifter out.

this is what it looks like with out the shifter

7. now take the new shifter just the lower half. and lube up the plastic part on the bottom.
you can slide the new shifter into the hole now. with it angled back.

EDIT: farther down some posted the rest of the way to do it.......
