TSR is for the heat shield, but that is not the problem IMO. My rattle started at around 38K miles, and took nearly 20K to get fixed with about 4 trips to the dealer in that span. The easiest way to hear the rattle is at around 2500-3000 RPM with the car moving. I was unable to replicate the noise in neutral or powerbraking (as some other have). Dealer said the load on the exhaust while moving influenced that. Good luck gettting it fixed - it is very annoying but once it's gone, you'll be happy you chased it down.

Just recently started hearing this rattle/coins in a can noise myself. My 06 M35 has 48k miles now.

Time to get it into the dealer...does anyone know when this sound is most prevalent and easiest to replicate? Just in case I have to replicate it myself for the techs.

My issue as well, I need to make sure this will hold true as for the bulletin number.

Jan 08, I purchased a brand new 07 Infiniti (M35x) and for over a year I fought with the Infiniti services team to address a �rattling, pinging, rocks in a can� issue coming from the exhaust system beneath the front of the car. Finally it took the regional manager to come down after filing two complaints with the inter-circle consumer affairs department. From that point; it took both of us to go into the garage and actually have the tech take the "heat Shield" off and to our demise. We found that the small piece of material inside of it was deteriorated. He (Roger Gettler) made them order a new heat shield which corrected the issue. Outside of that; I had additional issues from the �middle headrest latch being broke, the wood molding on the driver side came a loose on the door, the controller in the passenger side mirror went out and the last straw was a rattling in the passenger door they could not fix and needed to replace the whole panel.

Now; the new and current general manger for Charles Barker Infiniti tried to ease my pain recently by working a deal on a 09 (M35 Sport). I have owned this car roughly two weeks and again the rattling issue has returned. I have had an intermitted issue with the passenger mirror when putting the car in reverse and the AC in the seat hardly works in this car.

Upon giving Charles Barker an attempt to resolve the issue on July 8th; I'm not only disappointed, but very dissatisfied because from one perspective I'm being told it's just how the engine sound on the cars and is normal, yet it doesn't happen on every car. From another perspective; it was identified by tech as a rattle or pinging sound, but yet they cannot duplicate it on other models or fix the issue.
Additionally; the rude comments from the technician should not be tolerated by the company. Every time the technician named "Lance" has to ride with a customer to identify an issue. He is very rude and disgruntle toward customers. In fact; when explaining the issue; Lance makes rude comments "that if I want him to tell them that I would like something change out, then that's what he would tell them". He is the technician and though he here's the issue; when speaking with the service manager he then tells a slight different story or regurgitate it differently.

I'm now looking to take legal action against Infiniti because "WE" as customer should NOT have to drive a $60 thousand dollar car with a rattling sound on acceleration. I no longer want the vehicle and looking to return it and/or take whatever measures necessary to square this matter away. This same sound has been experienced by many customers across the US; they either end up going back and forth with the tech teams. Or have had the issue identified and resolved the issue in one of several different ways such as; wedging something between the shield and exhaust pipe. This is supposed to be a top of the line vehicle that should not be experiencing such issue.

Thats correct.

The rattle this thread is referring to is caused by micro fractures in the y-pipe

Don't be surprised when that doesn't solve your problem. Rocks can't get into the catalytic converters - they get under the heat shield (or so the dealer will try to convince you). This is not the problem - your rattle will return as soon as you drive away.

That noise is coming from rocks in the catalyst converters, to remove them you have to take apart the heat shield from the cats ...which doesnt seem right, so my dealer ordered mine today, talk to your Service people about getting the cats replaced -

Sounds like your dealer isn't sure. We'll wait and see if anyone else knows. I'm not to 60K yet, but tI don't think I have the noise either. Problem is, while I don't know what causes the noise, my M45 is from Texas, here in Indiana, I wouldn't be surprised if it starts making the noise after one winter, but then I'll probably be over 60k, so that'll be kinda weak if it isn't covered.

So I had that work done as mentioned before - new Y pipe and gaskets and have had the car back for a week with NO RATTLE to speak of. Thanks goes out to leftlane1 for the info on the fix. Seems like this issue is finally fixed. I had to lean on my dealer to get the work done, but after repeated insistance, they made the repair.

After much convincing, my dealer has agreed to change the Y-Pipe on my exhaust. This part has a cost of over $1150, but they were receptive to changing it under warranty after I did the leg work and referenced them to the previous person in Texas who had his changed. I, in fact, called the service manager Hoot and he went over the whole issue with me - could not have been nicer about it - and told me to tell my service manager to give him a call if he would like. It is being done this week, although I am out of town until Friday. I will follow up with another post on whether or not the issue is fixed, but my fingers are crossed.

I have the same exact problem in my '06 M35X. I took the service manager for a test drive and replicated the sound. He confirmed it was the heat shield, then said it wouldn't be covered under the dealer warranty (my car has 45K) because "it's a northern car and it has corrosion." I am not accepting that answer and will go through consumer affairs or the regional service manager. Is that service bulletin posted before still valid for thie heat shield issue? Clearly, this isn't an isolated issue and I shouldn't go out of pocket on it.

Twice my dealer has been unable to replicate the noise. When I take the tech out in the car, the car wont make the noise. So frustrating. I havent decided what Im going to do. My warranty expires in September, and Im leaning towards NOT getting an extended warranty. I also dont have tons of time to be taking my car to the dealer repeatedly.

Hi All

I have the same rattling on my 06 M35X with 40K, under acceleration I had two dealers check out the problem one said it was bad fuel. When said I use 91 or 94 Octane he then said it' engine ticking and all the infiniti do that. I don't think so.
So I went to a different dealer, they said it sounds like a timing problem so they re tuned the car no rattling for one day then it came back. They said to some back if I still have the problem.

Its difficult to hear at that speed, but its definitely there. I usually here it at 25-40

Hey that's just normal operation!

But on the way to work this morning I did hear the noise I think, passenger side, cruising at 60 or so and heard it with light throttle.

Heat shield rust and rattles from rocks inside has been a known problem since the 1990 Q45. The fixes are well known and eventually everyone will get some form of repair.
In 19.5 years I've had to do mine twice.

I'll do ya one better - here are my service record work order #s:

My name is Todd Ermenio, and my customer # at Grubbs is ERME01.

1st attempt at Grubbs was 5/19/08 - work order #65109. The service advisor was Duane Hacking (no longer there). This was the "loose heat shield/rocks in heat shield" non-fix.

2nd attempt was at Grubbs on 6/16/08 - work order #66628. Service advisor was the same guy. This time I insisted on them keeping it until they found the fix. They finally replaced these parts:

Tube Assy - Exhaust, FR - 20020-EH000
Gasket - Exhaust - 20691-0P600 (2 of them)
Gasket - Catalyst - 20692-65J00

The tech explained to me that they found small fractures in the Y pipe while power-braking. It was definitely the metallic rattling from 2k-3k rpms you describe. This absolutely solved that problem once and for all (fingers crossed forever). I would have traded the car in at a huge loss if I had to deal with that noise any longer.

Hoot helped me recently with a suspension popping issue that I battled for over a year also, and when he got involved, the job got done.

Sorry for the delay - I don't check on here very often. I had the work done at Grubbs Infiniti, after unsuccessful attempts at Sewell. The service manager there is Hoot Lankford, and he's great to work with. In fairness to him, he didn't get involved during the first go-round. I continued to press them (and actually refused to take my car back until it was fixed for certain). It was absolutely caused by microfractures in the Y pipe. Once they replaced that pipe, the problem went away. Initially they said it was due to an impact and wouldn't b covered under warranty, but I raised enough of a stink about this problem and the design that they in fact did cover it.

Interesting, I have the full Megan exhausts, mid pipes, and cat back. I did not have this problem when it was stock but now I have this exact problem. It sounds to me to be the heat shield around the mufflers, but I may be wrong. Please keep us up to date.

Edit: I went to the dealership to have this issue fixed and they did the heat shield first. I drove it immediately afterwards and the sound was gone so, at least in this instance, the sound was coming from the heat shield.

I also had the exact same "coins in a tin can" sound upon acceleration, between 2k-3k rpm. I pushed very hard with the dealership, who went with the same "heat shield" fix. That is not the problem - I promise. The real problem is microfractures in the Y-pipe that cause the rattling under strain. The design issue is that the exhaust pipes hang too low and you can have an impact and not even know it, thus leading to a crack. After going around and around, and literally being embarassed to drive my car due to this noise, I finally printed reams of examples of similar problems I found online, and gave the pages to the tech. After they stopped considering me a loony, they actually talked to Infiniti tech help and discovered the problem. They had a tech get under the car, powerbraked the engine into the right rev range, and found the cracks.

After many visits with the heat shield repairs that did nothing, or the "cleaning of rocks" from under the car (I liked that one), the fix was finally for real.

Insist that your dealer examine the y-pipe and the attached exhaust tubes to see if there is a crack. I'd bet the farm that's what is causing your problem. Don't settle for these lame attempts to get rid of you as quickly as possible - you paid good $$$ for a luxury car that shouldn't sound like a jalopy every time you pull away from a stop sign.

My car is at the dealer right now for this issue. The rattle is from a heat shield and there is a service bulletin about it. They said they have to order parts to get it fixed.

My issue now is I paid 2000 for an elite warranty and they say that's not covered. Granted its only 280 bucks, but I just wondering what else will not be covered. I think I'm going to ask for my money back on this warranty.

Does anyone remember, and this was like 15 years ago, a car called the Chevy Lumina? They had a sport version of it and the exhaust sound was very unique. It was a reverberating...repeating...tremble...

I think thats very very similar to the sound this rattle makes on my car, except this is slightly more metalic.

I had my car back at the dealer still with the same problem. I referenced that number and they said that pertains to the exhaust hitting the oxygen sensor but that that was not my problem. They said they placed a wedge in between the 2 and it was still happening. They are as perplexed as me and after 3 days of trying to fix, have given up. Now I'm very annoyed that this expensive car rattles like a Hyundai. If anyone else has success, let me know. I am still convinced that it's a bad catalytic but they won't replace it unless they are more convinced that is the problem.

My service managed called this afternoon and said they'd found a loose heat shield and replaced it. I was pleased, but on my way home I realized the problem had not been fixed. Its exactly the same as before.

Also, I asked them not to wash the car and when I picked it up they had. I got home and took a look at the car in the sun. Hello, swirl marks, all over the car.

Anyone with this problem should reference this problem number to their particular dealership.
That should help with avoiding the shrubbing of the tech and service managers shoulders..........

I think I had a similar situation, it sounded either like a knock and ping noise (like when you don't have high octane gas) or like a loose chain on bicycle rattling coming from under the front carriage. If this sound like my case, you might want to have them check the brake cable line...may need to be tighten.

Finally someone else has posted about this. I have the exact same issue on my car. I just got the car a month ago, so I havent taken it in yet for service. It has 29,000 miles on it.

Ive narrowed it down to occurring during light to medium acceleration, between about 2300 and 2900 RPM. My guess is something in the exhaust system, because it seems to be a certain note that the exhaust hits that causes the noise. But it could be cat converter heat shield i guess.

I agree about it coming from the pass side. Its totally noticeable, and very annoying.

I presume you are im;ying under acceleration. If it sounds like a can of marbles being shaken, then you are probably not using a Tier 1 Premium fuel.

If you are, better hook it up to an ODB II reader and check ECU and accesory functioning.

Dealer actually changed out the Y pipe, however the rattle was still there. That's when they contacted Infiniti.

heat shield or worst case.. motor mounts. I suggest jacking the car up and locating the heat shield and wiggle it with your hand (use gloves) and/or start the car while on jack to see if the sound if more evident while the car is jacked.

I had a similar issue with my previous car (ack Legend) and I used a wedge between the heat shield and never heard it again.

I have the same issue. Rattle is definitely in the engine compartment...between 2-3k RPM...goes away after that. Does not do it in neutral. Anyone?
