1997 Maxima will not crank

Sorry this is so long. I am hoping that by posting everything it may trigger with someone.

I have a 1997 Maxima SE with an automatic transmission and am having problems starting it. It has the factory installed anti-theft system as well as an after market remote starter and lock system (Compustar CM4200 Controller and 1WFM4R One-Way FM Remote).

The first time my wife came home from work in the morning and I went to start it about an hour later. All I heard were the clicks of the relays in the cabin of the car and I thought the battery was dead (only about a month old). I hooked up a battery charger with a jump start feature and it started after a few minutes.

About a month later, same scenario except this time it would not start with the battery charger. I tried starting in neutral then all gears. I thought it was the starter so I took it out and had it tested and it was fine. I put the starter back in and was able to bypass the ignition by running a wire from the positive battery terminal to the large post on the starter and a wire from negative terminal to the casing of the starter and it turned over. Still would not start with the key. Replaced the starter relay, no luck. Replaced the ignition, no luck. I tried switching the anti-theft relays and nothing. I decided to put everything back together just in case the unconnected wires from air intake were causing any problems. The car started.

After this I replaced the water pump and had no problems starting it after I completed the project.

The third time, about 3 weeks later, the car had been off for about 4 hours. It stalled when I tried to start it the first time and stalled the second time. The third time, nothing, just the clicks of the relays. I kept trying for a few minutes with no success. I got out of my car and locked it with the key fob and just thought to try starting it one more time with the fob and it started.

A few days later, I started the car in the morning and went to get new tires. The car had been turned off for about 5 minutes when the tire guy tried to start it and nothing. I fiddled around with it for a while and was playing with the fob and all of a sudden the doors unlocked. I do not think I pushed the unlock button because I was so surprised. The car started after that.

The next day (today) I drove to work, and at lunch time went to a store. When I came out it would not start and is now in my garage with the battery cables unhooked hoping that wll work. I had a Compustar installer come out and he bypassed the the Compustar controller and it still did not work. I thought it was the factory security system but I verified the system activates and when triggered will shut off when I unlock the doors and trunk with the key.

I am at a loss. In the morning I am going to try to turn the starter by running the power directly from battery to rule out the starter. I will also test the anti-theft relays as well.

If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. I will post if I find the solution.

Can someone please help me with some advice if possible. My 2000 Maxima is revving up and down from 1000rpms to 2500 rpms in park. I drove it and at the stops it felt like it was trying to go still. Anyone heard of this problem? Can this be my Ecu, wire harness, Trottle position senor? How can you tell if you have a bad ecu or trottle position sensor? wouldnt a scanner tell you if there bad?

My Dad has a 2004 I35. First foreign car he ever owned. Always Cadillac or Lincoln. Anyway, recently the service engine soon light came on. The car has barely 39,000 miles on it. They hardly use it, it's in the garage 24/7. My neighbor works for Nissan, he's a Tech. Advisor. He brought home a diagnostic machine and it showed 3 bad sensors. 2 cam position sensors and 1 crank position sensor. I know the 2003 Maxima and the 2003 I35 both had this problem and there was a recall for it. My Father is very dissapointed in this car, at 39,000 this problem has arisen. I called Infiniti, they say, according to his VIN# there is no recall on this vehicle. How can the 03' have the problem and his 04' at this low mileage have the exact same problem. Did anyone else run into this problem? These sensors are $126.00 a piece and labor is $110.00 per hour and to diagnose it at Infiniti is $103.00. That's alot of money for a man living on Social Security, dont'cha think? I think Infiniti should be responsible for this repair, am I crazy to feel this way?

Thanx to all who replyed with advice on bad running Maxima. I took my car a 2000 Max. to mech. yesterday and had the EGR tube cleaned out and it was completly clogged. He cleaned it out and now my power is back, thank goodness. Everyone is amazed it made it 200,000 miles b4 this occured. Thanx to all.

Just bought an 04 Maxima SL with 69K miles. This is my second Maxima (2003)And fourth Nissan/Infiniti. Really like the car but it has what seem to be some common issues. Bad front struts, warped rotors, door lock not always working, and peeling front grille. I think thats all... Anyways, wanted to see if anyone could direct me to a write up on how to change the struts. I've done it on other cars but i'd like to know what i'm getting myself into before i start. Also a write up on how to change the door lock actuator, i'm pretty sure that's what's wrong with the lock.

I'm also looking for some stock parts. Good condition factory grille and some light gray floor mats ( don't care how dirty, i own a detail shop )

hi, looking for some knowledgeable advice on a unique situation... I have a 96 i30t . About 5 months ago the engine blew due to a cracked radiator and overheated bad. The car sat for about 4 months until i finally had an engine swapped. after installation we doubled checked all wiring, and attempted to start the engine with no luck. i read on these forums to check for spark, compression, and fuel. i checked the fuel by disconnecting the line from the filter to the regulator. Fuel flowed out as i attempted to start the engine. Checked compression 179 on all cylinders. no spark however. The car continues to crank but will not start.

i took the car to a shop that has some nissan scanners and he says there is no signal to the injectors and no signal to spark. He says it cant be the ECU because he has communication with it. Im wondering if anyone has ever seen this problem after an engine swap or maybe the ECU needs to be reprogrammed or what... Oh and he changed all the coils and crank sensor checked fuse etc. Any info will be greatly appreciated!!!

Headlight Replacement for I35 (2002)

One of the headlights on my 2002 I35 is out and needs to be replaced. I'm told it's an HID bulb. Service center has quoted me $215.99 + labor ($47) for a replacement bulb. I don't want to pay more for the part than I have to. I'd like to find something cheaper online, but don't know where to look or what to look for. Any suggestions? I'd like something as close as possible to the original light.

TCS OFF and SLIP indicators stay on

Hi All;

My 01 i30 has an issue where these 2 indicators will remain on. Sometimes they seem to come on for no reason, other times they come on after the traction control has engaged.
Seems to be happening more on the colder days, any ideas?

Also, sometimes I get a very rough idle, as I slow to a stop, this usually happens right about the time the lights appear. I usually drop to neutral and rev to save from a stall (reflexes!).

It has 81k and I have not done anything to the transaxle since I got it 3 years ago at 50k.

I have checked the fluid, it seems clean, not burnt, and appears to be at the proper level.

Any ideas?

09 maxima drive wheel spins on wet pavement.

I have a 2009 maxima 3.5 sv with sport package. On wet pavement the drive wheel spins when a goodly amount of power is applied.

Shouldn't the traction control mitigate the "free spinning tire" so as to maximize traction?
The Traction control lite comes on, but the tire will spin till i let off on the gas pedal.

2004, 119k, auto, fully loaded. by fully loaded I mean FULLY. This baby has premium sound, leather interior, heated seats front AND REAR, heated wheel, electronic tilt/telescopic column, electric folding mirrors, compass in mirror, auto dim mirror, auto up/down windows on all 4 corners, push button control rear window shade, it's a 4 seater due to the fact that it has a center console in the rear. I paid $9600 for it after $800 cash down and them giving me $800 cash for that s***box Supra. Lol. Thoughts? Comments?

The code I think is p0744 (torque convertor)... my question is which is the best way to get rid of this code? Is the torque convertor only the round piece of metal or does it also works with any type of sensor? is it easier to just change the torque convertor or just the whole tranny? please guys help me...

My 95 maxima se has code p0725 for engine speed signal error and possible tcm fault. I don't know where it is. I thought it was under center console, but all that is under there is srs airbag control. Car runs n drives great, but tachometer doesn't work at all- stays on zero no matter what. I also have p0325 code for knock sensor, but from what I have heard it could be my o2 sensor. I am not going to take car to dealer to give me a B.S. diagnostic and charge me tons of money, so I need help. Any one else have similar problems?

I recently got my first Nissan, a 1997 Maxima with 163K miles. All was fine until recently it started backfiring through the exhaust when starting the engine (one "pop"). Once started it runs fine, fuel economy, performance are all OK. Twice it has not wanted to start, but did start after holding accelerator pedal down-almost all the time it starts, just with the backfire. Thought I should try to track it down before something gets worse. Thanks.

04 SL engine clicking above 40 mph

there is a rapid clicking coming from the engine when I exceed 40 mph. As I increase speed the intensity of the clicking increases as well, at 70 mph it is extremely loud. The clicking will go away at certain speeds like 60-65 mph and then there are times when it won't do it at all...maybe 30% of the time the clicking doesn't happen.

I have not noticed any loss in power or shifting dificulties.

Please help if you can, i just bought this and would like to get back to the dealer with some knowledge to ensure they repair correctly.

I have the MOMO F16 shift knob and am ordering the leather shift boot from redlinegoods.com. However the ebrake needs some help. I am planning on buying the MOMO pitstop with the pitstop boot. My car is a 2001 Nissan Maxima.

I unscrewed the retainer and the rubber grommet, then turned on the radio, heard the motor engage, pulled the broken piece out (previous owner and stuck it in and sealed it on so water wouldn't go down the hole), and then grabbed on the rest of the mast which pulled out about 1 foot and then stopped. The motor was still going but it doesnt' pull out nicely w/ the plastic gear/teeth strip. It doesn't seem like it wants to budge at all. I don't want to pull so hard I snap it off. I'm wondering, is it possible that the rest of the skinny section (it only broke off about 6 inches from the top) is stuck down in there and though I'm getting the wider outer sections out, I need to get that skinney part before the teeth/gears will do the rest of the work. In 2004 i had a 1994 Q45 and i replace my shocks to tokico blues and the car was running great , you could hardly feel the bumps now i am trying to do the same with my 05 maxima with 48k because i love a smooth ride the car still has the original struts and shocks on it and the ride quality is slowly starting to degrade i check the tokico web site and they don't carry any shocks or struts for my car .
Does anyone here knows about any after market struts and shocks that fits an 05 max other than KYB ? any answer would be greatly appreciated

Hey guys i'm new here, I need some help here I cracked my wifes information screen and I need to fix it. It seems like there are two screens, because it's cracked but it's not all blurry like there's an outer screen? can that just be replaced ? or not?
What is the correct way to get the screen out? I dont want to just start prying on the trim piece, not my car. I'm kinda in the dog house right now any help would be greatly appreciated

High pitch noise

Mine is a 2001 I30, 85K miles. When I start the defogger, there is a high pitch squealing noise which increases as I accelerate. This comes only when I have the "Automatic" ON. When I select Manual for heating, I do not hear this noice. From other threads I have read here, I think this has something to do with the A/c compressor as it activates in the Automatic mode.

Appreciate some help in figuring what's wrong and what needs to be replaced.

Previous owner snapped off the antenna and I would like to replace it. The motor still works just fine. I see them online for $13ish and Pep Boys claimed to have a match for $19. Is it worth my time? Will it retract all the way into the car or just part way? (p.s. I did search! I have seen great threads on "how to" but not "what with." Thanks!)

Hey guys im a noob to this forum and im looking for some answers for a question i have regarding a digital gauge cluster for a 1987 Maxima. I just got a refurbished gauge cluster, but when i installed it into the maxi all the lights came on and would not read the speed. The tach just reads 888 and the bars for the gas are all filled and the volt/oil pressure section are all full bars too. Is there a way to reset the cluster?

Just bought a '97 V6 3000cc Infiniti I30. Everything's fine, till I 'kickdown' the engine (automatic). When it idle, the rpm wobble arround 500rpm, then the engine went off But I can easily start it again. What's wrong with my car? Thank you for sharing your thought & experience.

Today I bought a 02 Infiniti I35 and joined the club ,and I'm glad I did, I loved the car so far. But I realized the passenger side low beam bulb is out, is it better I do buy one of the same or do I have to buy a pair, and btw how do I replace them? do I need any tool?

Dangerous problem with 2004 Nissan Maxima

2004 nissan maxima has intermittant problem. The car will stall while driving without any warning. When restarted car will be in 4th gear(guess) you can move over to autostick and change manually to 2nd but that is it. It will have a loud clunk when you do this. It will not change automatically and it will not revert back to working until car is turned off and left for a few seconds up to 5 minutes. When restarted it usually drives great but problem could happen again in 2 weeks or 2 miles you never know. This is beginning to get very dangerous as you never know when this could happen. I have taken in to Lincoln, Nebraksa Sid Dillon Nissan three seperate occassions without them being able to duplicate problem. It is happening more often now but it is just out of ext. warranty at 108,000 miles. Does anyone have any ideas? They seem to think there is a loose wire somewhere but really don't know. The engine runs great and transmission works fine when this issue isn't present. Thanks for any and all help offered!!

1995 Maxima Stumbling Issue

The other day my car started acting up, i noticed a stumbling when stopped or coming to a stop, i changed all the spark plugs hoping that was it and still nothing. I then pulled the codes and got a 0701 which indicates a mult cylinder misfire. I was wondering how this happens or if anyone has any info on how to fix it. I SEARCHED found a thread that stated about engine start troubles. I have no trouble starting my car it starts fine, just has a stumble at low rpms..... I also see that coils could be a key factor here as well, if so how do i check the coils? Any info or answers is greatly appreciated

O and PS i accidentally knocked it into neutral the other day while on the highway could this be a reason?

UPDATE: So i just spent four hours working on my car to try and figure out what it is doing. I ran every test possible, checked all the coils:

Ran resistance(ok)
Voltage(ok)
Spark(ok)

So it wasn't the coils

Checked the compression on all 6 cylinders, all were good the, misfiring cylinder had the best compression actually

After doing all this checked the O2 sensors, both came back not good on the VOM.

So we came to the conclusion that i have 2 bad O2 sensors and a bad injector causing it to run rich/lean....therefor causing the stumbling

So tomorrow we are goin to pull 2 O2 sensors off another Max and an injector see if that fixes it, if not its goin to nissan and i guess i'm goin to just have to sit there and take it like fresh prison meat

02-03 HIDs on 2001 Maxima

Does anyone know how hard it is to put the HIDs from a 02-03 and put them on a 2001? I haven't seen anything on it, so I don't want to go ahead if it's going to be super involved. I've seen some on eBay to buy, and I'd like to do it, but if there's intricate details, I don't want to go ahead with it.

Also, if it is a DIY job, and someone knows a better place to get the whole HID setup other than eBay, please let me know. Thanks.

oxygen sensor replacement

i got a 2007 maxima that i believe that my oxygen sensors are bad due to the fact that my gas mileage went downhill and that a bad smell is in the car every time i press the pedal almost all the way.
please if anyone has a diagram of the location of the oxygen sensors and if thats the problem thats causing my car to give bad smell and bad gas mileage

I have a 2002 I 35 with just over 10400 miles. I recently replaced the alternator and battery. Everything ran fine post replacement. The other morning I tried to start it, nothing. It turns over fine, just won't start. I replaced the spark plugs and the cam sensors and still won't start. Any ideas. Thanks.

I need your help. I'll do my best to piece together the story.

2004 Maxima
94,000 miles and I am the original owner. 10 mile commute, each way, mostly freeway in Southern California.

In April, I took my car in to a AAA approved repair shop and they replaced an engine mount. When shifting, especially from N to D and starting from a dead stop...the engine was lurching forward and you could feel it inside the car. When I would open the hood and test it (w/ foot on brake) shift from N to D...you could see the engine surge forward. AAA repair shop said busted engine mount was not supporting the engine and that was responsible for it.

It seemed to improve, but by August, it was really bad again and I took it back. I think I was hoping that it was better and I was compensating by not accelerating as hard from dead stop, but when the engine was fully warmed up, maybe after 15 minutes, the lurch/surge would get more noticeable. I took it back and they said "other engine mounts were weakened when the first engine mount went down...and another one has busted." Now, 2 new engine mounts and $1,000 in repairs, you'd think I was in the clear.

I took my car to oil change to dealer in late-September, they recommended the following:
- air filter (replaced myself)
- throttle body service
- new tires - I'm monitoring them
- alignment - non-issue
- power steering hose leaking (they admitted it wasn't bad and could wait)
- power steering flush (have not taken action on it)
- transmission service
- in cabin filter (replaced myself)

Researching previous notes, it was also recommended that I get tranmission service in October 2008.

Admittedly, I'm bad about car maintenance. I usually prioritize and get the dealer's suggested repairs at my AAA shop. Now though, I'm pissed that I'm $1,000 down w/ no result.

So I took it last week, the surge/lurch is back. They looked at my transmission fluid and said it needed to be flushed becuase it was really dirty. I didn't dispute that because it did need to be replaced. They felt that might fix it. Since I had been told to get this done before, I did it. I was told it will clean the valves and remove any blockage that was resulting in the surge/lurch.

I picked it up last weekend and it shifted like butter initially. After a couple of days, old problem returned. Only bad once car is fully warmed up.

I called the shop yesterday and they referred me to a transmission shop because "at this point, you need to talk to a transmission expert." They did, if memory serves me correct, discuss throttle body service when I picked up my car last weekend.

So here goes:
1. What do you think is the problem?
2. What is the recommended next step?
3. Could the issues below, mentioned at my late-September oil change, have an impact on my current problem and does action need to be taken now on any of them:
- throttle body service

Im in the process of removing the steering rack off of my 95 maxima. I have the whole rack lose and all hoses remove. all that is left is to slide the rack out. but...... the steering linkage nub is catching on the frame. i cant seem to get it out for the life of me. I've searched for any articles but not finding any instructions on removing the steering rack. i've googled it also. any help would be great. Thanks!

I have a 1995 Nissan Maxima with about 210XXX miles or so. The other day when I was driving my car started to jerk to the right when my car switched gears. When I start off the steering wheel is straight, after going through 2nd and 3rd gear and the rpms drop below 2,500 i notice that my car jerks to the right and my steering will s*** left. My cars steering wheel will lean towards the left to keep the car straight. The thing that is confusing me is that my alignment it still good while going down the road and the steering is leaning to the left. Makes no SENSE.

For various reasons the car has not been driven much for the last 3 years. That changed 4 months ago. I've had a tune up, brake service, battery replaced, belts changed in last 3 months. All as part of routine maintenance except the battery/terminals which were corroded.

Now for some reason, starting today the airbag, brake, oil, lights come on and stay on. I had 1200.00 in maintenance and replacements done 6 weeks ago in order to AVOID problems and now this??? What could be causing this?

Spark Plug change

Need procedure to remove and replace spark plugs on a 1997 Maxima SE. I see the front 3 coils and the 2 philip screws that hold on the cap. I removed the 2 screws on one of the coils but could not pull off the coil. Do you need to remove the conecting wire first? That wouldn't even pull off.
I'm assuming these are the colis. However, some of the posts say you must remove a cover for access to the plugs/coil. Am I looking at the wrong area?

My 2000 I 30 has been throwing this catalyst efficency below threshhold code. I heard many people get this code. Wondering if anyone was successful at resolving the issue. The code will turn itself on and off evey couple fill-ups. I have been using shell 91 for fuel. I replaced the gas cap since the code was turning off by its self. So I'm thinking my cat is ok. Anyone had their computer reprogramed at the dealer?

I'm new to the site and had a question about my 2001 Maxima 20th anniversary. I've been having an intermittent issue with the steering wheel controls. Sometimes they work fine, and then other times, they don't work at all, no matter how many times I hit them, or how hard. Also, every now and then, the station will change magically, kinda like the button was hit on the steering wheel. I saw some mention of a switch that someone replaced that helped with an issue like this, but not much mention of the switch or where it was. Does anybody have any info on this switch and where it's located? Also, I would be interested in the difficulty of replacing it yourself if someone knows. Thanks.

I have 2001 Infinite I30 with 91000 miles on it. Ready for the major service. I called a mechanic today and he mentioned that it does not need major service until 105,000 miles and minor service should be good at 90,000 miles. Can anyone confirm if this is right with the infiniti's?

Another mechanic mentioned that at 90K the spark plugs needs to be replaced.
I believe the original spark plugs are platinum based and normally have life on 90K-120K miles. Should I replace them at 90K?

What are the things that are usually done at 90K service?

my maxima is pritty much done...the cross beam and some of the frame is rusted way to much...i'm going to take pictures and i'll put it on here if anyone thinks it's fixable..but for the time being i'm looking for another maxima 96' so i can use some of the upgraded and recently purchased parts i have and swap them...but all in all any used car will do at the moment as long as it's in good shape...let me know if anyone knows anywhere in the south carolina area..i'm from greenville..

Alright so the story goes. I friend is about to pick this I30 up from a friend of ours, the ac compressor clutch is seized, and as you know its belt is in conjunction with the alternator. For temp sake does anyone know a belt size that can be run to bypass the compressor?

OK, so. I am new to the forums and am new to cars. I do know basics and could easily get help if I ran into trouble. But I am wondering where to start with my Maxima. I was thinking a cold air intake. Any suggestions as to good brands? I know K&N doesn't make any for this model. (Except the apollo but they are not street legal).

After the cold air intake I was planning on a new muffler. The one that is on the car is old and rusted. I want to get a muffler for performance, not just sound. The first thing I did to the car was wire in some LED windshield washer nozzles. (All I did was splice it into the headlights). But I do not want to be a ricer. So now I am moving onto performance. I am also on a budget so I cannot get the most expensive parts. For the muffler, I was thinking maybe magnaflow... But I don't know if they will just bolt on where the old one was, or if I will need to weld it. I would prefer bolt on ones, but if absolutely necessary I can get my uncle to weld it. (He is a nissan/infinity mechanic). Thank you for all the help!

Dash Lights

When its cold out (40*), the speedometer and fuel gauge lights don't turn on. when it's mild it, they are on with everything else. I'm assuming its the same issue as if I had with my 240, it goes on after warming up because the contacts aren't getting a good connection? they function properly, they just don't light up when I turn my lights on when it is cold out.

I was just looking for a second opinion.

High Idle after spark plug install

I recently changed spark plugs on my 02 I35 using the following DIY.

Everything went smooth, I had to clean the throttle body and UIM with throttle body cleaner as it was filthy as hell. After the install the car has a slightly higher idle, rather than being around 700 it�s at around 900~1000. Any ideas as to what is causing this? The SES light also came on but that could be due to a faulty gas cap as my filler pipe top is corroded a bit and it has thrown of the SES light in the past.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Edit: Rather than using OEM NGKs I used Denso Iridium plugs.

Automatic Transmission In Park, wheels are moving

Hello,
I have a 1988 Nissan Maxima, I replaced the drive axles, both R & L. The Left axle didn't go in smoothly, pushed it couple of times then I had to pull it out and re-inserted again, went in and locked by the circlip.

Nowwith shifter in PARK, R axle is locked, Left is moving, cranked the engine several time, id did not rotate but was not locked, then the R axle didn't lock as well.

Checked cable adjustment for the shifter, didn't help. Starter works in both positions, P & N.

What is the next step, remove and re-install both axles ? would it change anything, Please advise, thanks

Issue with rear brake calipers

I own a 1997 Maxima and today I was trying to change the rear brake discs and pads, and when I tried to push the cylinder back with a c-clamp...it wouldn't go back enough for the disc to slide in between the two pads. Is there a way the cylinder can be replaced? Or so I have to buy a new caliper all together??

P0430 -- P0171 Bank2 to Bank1

Have a 2001 Maxima. That gave a P0430 bank2 error. After much research. I had the y Cat replaced and the downstream o2 Sensor. The P0430 has gone away I'm now getting the P0171, which relates to Bank1. Any idea why I'm now getting Bank 1 errors. I guess, since the P0171 didnt exist before, somehow what I did to fix the P0430 caused the P0171...does that make sense?
