Is it worth upgrading my comp or just getting a new motherboard and start over

I have a K8V-SE Deluxe Asus motherboard with 1.5 GB or ram and a X64 1.6 GHz AMD CPU. I want to max it out and put 3 GB of ram and a dual core 3.XX GHz CPU.Would it be more cost effective to just get a new motherboard and start over or stay with my current socket 754 setupI have no problems really but the stuff is just out dated. And it was meant to be a server so I added a 64 MB GPU but I now want to play some games on it since its pretty fast.

Windows DEP preventing DVDs playing.

Windows DEP is closing Media Player any time I try to play a DVD. It's starting to really, really infuriate me. I've made an exception for media player in the DEP controls. The MOST infuriating thing is that the problem KEEPS COMING BACK. If I manage to make DVDs play, it won't last forever. Next time I restart my computer they might stop working again. The DEP exception is still in place...it just isn't working.I'm sick of having to work AROUND this crap. Is anyone aware of a PERMANENT solutionI'm pretty damn irritated that there's no "just turn this stupid s*** OFF" button for DEP. Only on, more on, or exceptions for certain programs. Even more ridiculous, Windows simply won't let you apply exceptions to certain programs. Utterly unbelievable. I never had problems with viruses before Vista. I sure as hell don't need DEP "protecting" me from DVDs now.In the meantime, I'm using VLC media player. I friggin' HATE VLC media player, though, and I really really do not want to make it my permanent solution.

My hard drive is failing

I know this is a Car/Nissan forum but obviously there are some pretty smart guys on here so. And if I never was on NICO I would ask "Thehotfix.net" but that place turned in to a crap hole to put it nicely.I have a hard drive that is in the process of failing. I first had it installed in a Netgear SC101 (Network attached Storage) and that went south so I traded it for a 1 GB memory stick. Now I have my data on the hard drive in a windows file system rather than the Netgear file system and the hard drive is powering on and off randomly. Now recently I got a error on Windows stating the drive was in use and "Page" something. so I want to get a new drive and just put the data on that But I want to know if its safe to do so.I did Check disk and I used Spinrite and no change. The cables are fine and when wiggling the power supply nothing changes at least I don't think so because it restarts frequently. So any tips would be appreciated. The SC101 I had my data kept crapping out on me (The file system would go corrupt) so I would have to dump the data onto a spare hard drive then put it back on there. Now I don't know if the hard drive was bad from the start but either way it has'nt been a good experience.Cliff notes:Hard drive restarts randomly.wondering if its safe to transfer data to new hard drive.

USB audio codecs problem

I'm using a usb turntable to convert my LP vinyls to CDs. Windows XP Pro on an HP laptop. I have multiple programs that I use including Easy Vinyl Converter, Audacity, Magix Music on CD and DVD and Itunes. All of a sudden I no longer have the ability to adjust the volume (incoming level) when I'm recording. The usb audio codecs is there but when I go to the volume control in the programs or go through the control panel, there is just nothing there in the way of a mixer or volume control to put back in the programs. If it's any help, the controls are all there for playback through the onboard sound card. Just not the usb audio codecs selection.I'm guessing that something got inadvertently deleted somewhere, but I'm not sure what to do since the recording still works. I do need the level control as some of the tapes and albums are of varying strengths. Is there a particular driver I need to reinstall or is there somewhere else in the computer I should be looking

I have no idea why but the sound on my computer isn't working. I hooked my speakers up to my laptop and they worked just fine, so I know my speakers aren't bad. When I went into my control panel and clicked on audio and sound devices, it says no device detected but my speaker are hooked up and turned on Does anyone know why it might be doing this. I have Windows XP BTW.

My O.C.- Your thoughts

I've finally gotten around to overclocking my desktop and I'm a little confused. I'm at the point where I have the voltages and other changes made and it will start. The last test I ran on Prime95 only ran 25 minutes after I changed the CPU voltage to 1.28125 from what is pictured and I'm really not sure what to change now. Can anyone kind of point me in the right direction as to what I should change Would it help if I changed some of the settings back to auto I was originally taking the CPU voltage down and that was getting nowhere, so I raised it. thats why its raised to what it is now. At what point do I stop raising this and change a different setting I'm using Prime95 to stress it and CPUID, CPU-Z, and RealTemp 3.00 to monitor. The temps durring the Prime95 test are pretty consistant at around 42 C for core 0 and 36 C for core 1 and the GPU staying at around 44 CHere are the system specs:Windows XPAsus P5Q Pro moboIntel Core 2 Duo E8400 CPUThermalright True black-120 CPU coolerOCZ Fatality 1066 RAM, 2Gbs8800GT Video card640 Gb Western Digital HDAntec NeoPower 650 BlueAntec 900 caseAnd finally some pictures of what I've done so far:Temps and voltages from the monitoring programs

BIOS does not detect my HDD's after putting them in a RAID

Here's what's going on.The Mobo is an ASUS M3A78 T and has a raid controllerI have two HDD's I put in a RAID0. Before putting them in a RAID, the sata ports auto detected both drives. After putting them in a RAID, which the controller screen says it's a functional raid, going into the BIOS shows no HDD's detected.I do not have an OS and I can't get it installed since no HDDs are detected. The ASUS disk has an XP and Vista raid driver built in that I can do something with, but I have no idea what because it wants me to create some boot disk and I don't even have an A: drive to try to create one.I think my only options are1) Make it work somehow so I can try to install Win72) Install win 7 on a single drive, then convert to a RAID0 later Is that even possibleThoughts

Host your documents in the cloud on a small device that runs 24/7 and uses a maximum of 4 Watts of power.SlugOS is a Linux distribution for the Linksys NSLU2. Installing SlugOS and installing the various tools are normally a daunting task if you are either new to Linux or have never used Linux before. The following guide will help a person with little or no Linux experience install SlugOS on the NSLU2 and configure the NSLU2 to run the BarracudaDrive server. When you have the BarracudaDrive server running on the NSLU2, the server can be used for more that just a NAS. In addition to functioning as a NAS, with the BarracudaDrive server, your local network can also be accessed remotely. BarracudaDrive lets you or multiple users access and work with electronic documents or any type of data stored on your NSLU2 from remote locations.Read more here.
Cheap sources of smoke for testing case ventilation

All the HVAC smoke testers/creators are around 100bucks. The smoke in a can is about $10, but won't last long at all.I'm wanting some source of smoke that I can spray around areas of my case, and see how it sucks in, moves through the case, etc...That way I can make fins/guides if need be.Any idea's besides burnin things I don't want to cause smoke stains/damage to my case and electronics...so I need clean smoke

I believe my friend got Phished... any help

ok, so my gf's cousin's BF actually purchased those fake Antispyware and Antivirus programs that pop up out of no where from surfing one of those unprotected sites (probably pr0nz). Anyways, I tried messing with his pc... *I tried running that malicious removal tool that you can get from the Microsoft site: nada, program instantly gets killed* I tried installing my personal copy of McAfee Enterprise Edition: it installs, but won't allow it to update or scan. fail* I tried Superantispyware: it kills it when it scans.I've read tutorials on how to remove them, but they're long as hell and I'm impatient. I think I'd rather just reinstall the OS, the guy barely has crap on his HD, probably school files, but thats about it... but that alone doesn't erase the fact that they have his credit card info. What would you guys recommend the next step should be so that his identity and money doesn't get jack (or should I say, more jacked in regards to the $$$)

The problem is that this card is MASSIVE, and I honestly don't think there's room for the top card to get good airflow with the second card installed. The PCIE x16 slots are really close together, with the top card reaching down to the top edge of the lower slot. This is the motherboard I'm working with:http://www.newegg.com/Product/...31371I'll end up in a situation like this (different motherboard but same PCIE spacing):http://imgur.com/ZNTxJ.jpgAm I safe cramming my cards together like this

Looking for a new processor

So here is the deal. I am currently using a 1.8GHz processor. It seems to work alright, but from watching the task manager, it seems to max out a lot now that I've upgraded to XP from win2k (I actually upgraded like a year ago, but I'm just now getting around to addressing this). I've done some other things to speed the system up that have helped a lot, but the processor is the last one left. The MB is a socket 754 and I found a 2.6GHz processor for it, but it's from a laptop. The seller (found it on eBay) says that it's been modified to work in PC's. I can't really seem to find anything on the internet that says that this is a bad thing to do, but I thought I'd ask in here to see what others thought of this. I'd like to make sure that this is legit before I drop the money on it.

Making my computer faster

So my computer has been slow ever since I upgraded to XP. I was running win2kpro before. I assumed it was just my old setup not being able to handle the newer OS very well. Well I recently motivated and decided to figure out why it was running so slow. So I spent a few hours on Google and figured out that the old drive that I had installed the OS on was REALLY slow. That was why it took so long for the computer to boot up. The other thing I found out was that my page file was HUGE. This is because if was only running 512MB of RAM. So, this is how I fixed it. I DL'd a program called ghost copy that will copy the contents of one drive, bit-by-bit to another drive, allowing your OS to remain intact so you don't have to re-install it. Then I copied all of the info I had on the newer drive I was using for media onto my external drive I use for backups, and copied the OS over. This program also re-partitioned the drive, which was nice. Then I fired up the computer and it took maybe 1/4 the time it normally does for windows to load up. The newer drive is also MUCH more quite than the old on. That speed up the load time, but the computer still seemed slow loading programs and web pages and the HD light was lit up every time I loaded a new web page. I knew I needed more RAM. So I did some checking and found out that my MB could handle up to 2GB of RAM, so I hit up good ole eBay again and found a fair price on 2 X 1GB sticks of RAM. It came yesterday and I installed it just a few min. ago. All I can say is WOW! It's like a whole different computer now. I was contemplating getting something newer because this one seemed so slow, but I've completely changed my mind now! Now for the processor. That is another post though. I want some input on that one.

My desktop disappeared

So... I'm sitting in Al Asad, Iraq... Friend comes to my room and wants to go to the gym, so I hit restart on my computer. I come back, and it's on the log-on screen. Everything looks NORMAL. Then I log on and my entire background is black. I have no Start/Task bar. All I can do is press Ctrl Alt Delete to open task manager. Used it to open windows explorer. The only program I can get to run is internet explorer. Everything else seems to disappear into the background and WerFault.exe (Windows Problem Reporting) appears on Task Manager. The only other odd thing is when I log in, I have a Apple Mobile Device error. No idea WTF that is considering this isn't a MAC. Getting a new computer out here isn't an option since pretty much everywhere quit shipping Electronics to APO addresses. Skype and Yahoo Messenger are my only current ways of talking to my family back home, so any help would be greatly appreciated.I've already tried restarting multiple times.Done a full shut down.Restarted in safe mode.Tried running norton and spybot - S & D. No luck with either since everything drops into the background.

Help choosing PDA/Pocket PC for in-car use

I have nissan consult in my Z and want to find a PDA/PC to use with it. I want something that I can use with a cradle, obviously a decent size color screen, and the ability to use as a gps would be sweet too. I have used MS streets and trips before on my laptop and liked it, but the newer gps units I get in rental cars are much easier to use and have a lot of cool features like restaurants, gas, etc. I still have the gps antenna but have lost the streets and trips CD's for it. This was back in 05' anyways.Any input is welcomed. I don't have a clue where to start searching, what kind of GPS apps work well, etc. I don't want to have NASA going on in my ride, IE: PDA, Stiletto2, GPS, etc. so I would like one that can do both gps and consult. I would need some type of serial/usb switch as well yes To switch between gps ant and consult cable

I need an access point! (wireless network question)

So I don't know anything about networking and routers and all that but I am using a desktop computer in a upstairs bedroom and the wireless signal sucks a**. I have to keep refreshing the signal maybe.. 3 times in a 30min time span. From what I've been told by my roommate, it's wireless on the 1st floor and only the basement computers are hardwired. So I need an 'access point' to boost the signal from the wireless router in a downstairs office.I think the router they have in the office downstairs is this one:http://www.newegg.com/Product/...27215I was thinking of getting this one because of the sweet price and decent reviews:http://www.newegg.com/Product/...20025and there's also this one:http://www.newegg.com/Product/...24012So I don't know how much longer I'll be living here but I don't want to blow $100+ on a AP I may not need in my next place. But anyway, what should I do Should I try Ebay or should I buy a new AP My roommate is a computer nerd so he can hook it all up but I was wondering what's necessary. I don't do torrenting or anything. Just want a reasonably fast connection (we have cable internet).

Blu Ray data and Dx9

So I want to use XP MCE on my new computer and rip BRD's. I know with a BR drive I need directx10 to watch them, but can I read the data, rip it, and still watch it as an .MKVCurrently have no problems watching .MKV's now, just don't know about the whole read/write thing. Because it's data I should be fine, just wondering if anyone's tried it yet. Also, anyone running a multimedia server My current computer case can only hold 3 drives suspended by bands, so I was only going to use 2 drives in Raid 0. Raid 5 with 3 drives seems like a bit of a waste, but with 5+ drives would be very beneficial.I'm not going to build a home server at this time, just thought I'd get a few idea's. A 10TB server would hold about 350-400 BR movies; nearly 1400 DVD's plus extra's.

ISP is blocking torrent sites... any workaround aside proxysites

Just recently Miniova and PirateBay became inaccessible to me. I figured the sites were just down but it went on for several days so I tried getting to PirateBay from a proxy and it worked fine. I don't really like using proxies and I can't torrent anything from PirateBay to begin with, so is there anyway around this block that I don't know about

Panda or Cyberdefender

Well, it's kind of funny because I saw the other post on here asking which is the best anti-virus, but I didn't see either of the two softwares that I'm looking at. I got a few virus in few monts, even thou I had Norton and AVG loaded on my system by my brother.I'm gonna pay for my next anti-virus cause I just don't trust either of these, plus, like is reported, AVG takes up so many resource. My friend at work (in IT) recommend Panda and, and I saw on forums it was one that people like, but I also have read that Cyberdefender works really good too, so I'm a little torn on a decision and would liek some in put. Panda doesn't seem liek it is good, but that's just my opinion. Other peopels seems to like it, but I guess if I'm going to be using it, I need to like it.I looked at cnet for review of difference anti-virus. They gave AVG good marks, but with having it now, and not so happy, I looked at Panda http://www.download.com/Panda-...mncol - they gave it 3 stars. & Cyberdefender http://www.download.com/CyberD...mncol got 4. So I think more about getting Cyberdender - it's cheaper if I want to pay for it (and I do - no more freebies to me!!) Cyberdefender is a public company, which seems prety important to me, but is it any good you think

USB in a DS cartridge

Probably not quite what you were expecting, but on a whim I decided to make this a couple weeks ago:Lunar Knights is a truly terrible game. I opened the game cart a while back to see what DS game hardware looks like. Then a couple weeks ago I cracked open a very bulky USB thumb drive to find that the actual hardware was less than half the size of the massive housing. The hardware looked compact enough to fit in the DS cart so I gave it a try. It worked out pretty well. Unfortunately I don't have any internal pics from before I sealed things back up, but I do have more of the finished product:This shows how I trimmed the contact guides to leave room for the USB connector. You can see in the previous two pictures just how cleanly the connector lines up on the top side. The game cart has two posts inside to which the game PCB anchors. The USB PCB conveniently fit EXACTLY between them, ancoring it solidly. It was also exactly the right length to fit in the cartridge, with the back snug against the "top" and the USB connector cleanly at the bottom. This shot also shows the conveniently still-visible LED indicator in the center of the visible PCB. Just dumb luck that it worked out like that, but it's nice to still be able to see the LED.Here you can see how the lower part of the USB connector is longer than the top, which worked out perfectly fitment-wise.The only thing that didn't fit absolutely perfectly was the thickness. The DS PCB has ICs on only the top side. The USB PCB has ICs on both sides, so it's marginally thicker and actually causes the face of the cartridge to bulge a tiny bit. But it's barely noticable. I do kind of wonder about heat with prolonged use, though, since the ICs are directly in contact with the front and back faces of the cartridge. And just for fun, the original innards of the game cart:The USB drive I used has a 1GB capacity and ironically I used it to ferry the pics I posted here to work with me to upload.

Just got dsl from ghey at&t but using an older modem, need help...

So i got dsl from at&t about 3 weeks ago, th account was activated on the 1th but i had no interwebs, my dsl light kept flashing so after a whole lot of asshatness, they finally sent someone out and the problem was with their lines not being hooked up to my jack.so the problem now is the dsl light is steady so it's getting signal from att but the internet light on the modem is solid red...the tech said they don't support this modem so he couldn't help me set it up (dick) so i called tech support and the lady helped me out to the point where i got to the ip address of the modem but then she told me the same thing, she can't help me out because that modem is not on their tech support list. So, i'm either tempted to just go and get a new modem that is supported by them (which costs i don't know how much) or see if someone can help me figure this out...now the only problem is all that crap is at home and i'm at work right now, lol...this sucks....so maybe somebody wants to give me some tech support later this afternoon or evening to set it up...Dave or Noah....i know guys know this ish...The only thing i remember is that the modem is a 2wire and its the modem my girl used in phoenix but the service she bought it from was "qwest" The att tech said the only problem was getting the modem to talk to the computer, i.e. configure the modem to the comp....i'm not very knowledgeable on this stuff, my brother is a computer nerd but unfortunately i haven't spoken with him in a couple years because i don't like the guy.help me please! i'm paying for interwebs i'm not using!

I am working on my Counseling Internship and am helping one of the counselors out with a Senior Exit Survey. I am running the statistical data and trying to figure out the percentage of students that answered a particular response. The following is just an example:As you can see, the columns have a 2 digit # (highlighted blue). And at the bottom right, is the sample size. Well, what I want to do is convert these totals to percentages. I can't figure out a FORMULA to plug in, so that I can quickly convert these. I mean, I can do them by hand, but I am sure there is a way to just enter a formula and have them converted. Can someone please help. Thanks in advance

Okay here's the setup:A Lenovo 3000 C200 laptop, base model w/ XPRecently, I noticed the "server taking too long to respond" page happening alot to me. I checked "network connections" and found that the "Internet Connection" Icon had disappeared, but would re-appear when I used the regular wired LAN connection. So, I tried deleting the Broadcom device from the device manager and re-installing (writing over, yes to all) the factory driver from the Lenovo website. It seemed to work for about 20 minutes, but now I am having the exact same problems again.Ideas

Wow. My bandwidth is nuts!..Or is it

Ok, I am paying for an 8/1 Mbps connection...but my test says I'm on a 25/2.5Ha, there's Cox cable's "power boost" deceiving it's subscribers. "Power boost" gives you a little more bandwidth for a very short period of time, then chokes itself back down to normal. Well these tests use such a small file that the power boost gives your connection near WOT the entire time it's testing. However, give it a 5MB file or more and I wil be limited to a fast enough download, but only 100KB/s upload.

PC died

My newest PC died over the weekend. Seemed to have gotten hung up then upon reboot, never got passed the bios screen. Booted to bios and ran a memory test and it stalled at 67%. Rebooted and no video output at all. Tried a different video card with the same results. Tested power supply and appears to be good. Tried disconnecting components systematically and no response. Looks like the mother board is toast. This is an HP slimline with uses a mini-ITX board. The damned thing is one month out of warranty and HP has had a known issue with a similar issue on this board, it is not one of the models covered under the extended warranty for it. So I put a new mobo on order and should arrive today. The only ones I could find were made by Intel and Zotac. Intel's offerings were lame as none of them had a PCI express slot for video. I run a dual display and have a dual DVI card specifically for this. Zotac does have a few that should be compatible. The only issue with any of the aftermarket offerings is that HP uses a micro ATX connection to the board which apparent;y is not easy to find on short notice. So I guess some splicing is in order. No big deal, I need to extend the power supply ATX connection anyways as the connnection is located muh differently on the mobo. The good news is the new board will have a max memory of 8 GB and an onboard Nvidia 9300 GPU. While this would share main memory and probably run slower, it also supports Hybrid SLI. Nvidia says the 8400GS, which is the discrete card I have, should work with this so I'm curious as to how much of a boost I might see. Its not really a dedicated gaming rig so I don't plan on relying on it, but since I already have the hardware, it could be a nice boost in performance (any might be better than nothing). The other issue is since I have an OE copy of Vista on it, I may lose it when it detects the new board. I have seen some suggest calling MS will yield a new activation code and I'd be set, but others say otherwise. Some have had success in transferring it without issue, but as far as I can tell, that required removing drivers and such, which I can't do without a new mobo in place. Worst case, I'll try out a copy of Windows 7 RC, which I downloaded this week. All said and done, I could end up with a better system...

AMD Vs Intel

Don't let the title mislead you. While I am comparing the two, its in a different way. I prefer the Intel processors, but I'm currently seeking a graduation gift for someone and we are looking at getting her a cheapish laptop. It will need to mainly be used for school and casual uses, but the graduate will likely do some light gaming (I think she is into the Sims at the moment). Nothing too heavy. Laptops with dedicated graphics cards are really only available in higher end models so I'm likely going to be looking for something with integrated graphics. That said, I wanted to get an opinion about what the better compromise would be in such a case. Some initial searching yielded that the AMD/ATI integrated chips are better than the typical Intel 4500 graphics, but it seems I would be taking a slight hit in processor performance if I went that route. Of course, in the price range we are considering, it apears we are also leaning towards a dual-core at best (vs Core 2 Duo). Just looking for some opinions on this. My netbook is the only computer I have that has integrated graphics and I haven't tried any games on it. Not to mention, even if I did, the processor may be a limiting factor as well. TIA!

I've been playing Starcraft and C&C Red Alert since I was in high school and don't expand much past that for PC games.
http://www.hulu.com/labs/hulu-desktopHulu Labs has released Hulu Desktop, a "lean-back viewing experience for your personal computer," as the developers explain. The software features a sleek interface that has been optimized for use with Apple or Windows Media Center remote controls, "allowing you to navigate Hulu's entire library with just six buttons." Windows users must have at least an Intel Pentium Core Duo, with a 1.8GHz processor and 2GB of RAM running Windows XP. Mac users need an Intel Pentium Core Duo, with a 2.0GHz and 2GB of RAM running OS X 10.4 (Tiger). Hulu Desktop runs directly on your computer and does not require a web browser, making thing easier to navigate on a HTPC.http://www.hometoys.com/hotsto...d=139

Going wireless...

At my parents house. They have DSL, with a crappy DSL modem. 3 questions:1. Can I buy a wireless router to substitute the modem Complete noobert with networking.2. The wireless is mainly for my Xbox360, the router itself is going to be next to the desktop PC, the house is over 1,000sq. ft. single floor. What's a good rating for the house G or N The 360 and router are going to be on opposite ends of the house. I play mainly FPS'.3. Preferred brand Belkin looks reliable because it looks professional looking, lol. I've had some experience with Linksys, and had some trouble with it(360 kept having DNS messages), so I don't want Linksys. Other brands I've seen is D-Link and Netgear.

How to completely copy a hard drive

Hey guys, I built a computer before Christmas, ran a version of windows that eventually quit working...if you know what I mean.Well I have a computer that works, and I want my new computer to be exactly like my old computer. How can I completely copy (including the restore info on the D: drive) the entire HDD over to my new computer's HDDWhat I've done is used a 3rd computer plug my old comp's HDD into an external HDD, then copied that info into a folder in the 3rd computer. I then drug that info from the 3rd computer onto a different external HDD. I then put the old HDD back in the old computerI plugged the new HDD into the old comp (not master)I plugged in the external HDD into the old computer and copied the data over to the new computer's HDD.I put the new HDD back in the new computer, turn it on and Window's does not load.If I put the old HDD in the new computer, everything loads just fine. The old computer uses Windows XP MCE with the SP3 update. That's the operating system I'd like to use; I don't want to use XP pro (which is what I first installed on the new computer that expired) and I don't want Vista.Any idea's

Want to get an Exterior HD 500GB or 1TB - What is a good brand

I'm looking into getting an exterior HD to save all my music, pictures, and my important files to. Right now I'm torn between what Western Digital, Seagate, and HP have to offer, but at the same time there are others out there that have what I want, but I don't know which one to go with. I'm looking at either a 500GB or preferably an 1TB model. I'm on a tight budget so I don't want to spend more the $180 on it, as I know there are model out there that have what I want but are in the $200+ price range.I really like the western digital model, it's small, attractive, and if I get more in the future and put them on a bookcase, people will just think they are books. But I've read some bad reviews. Same goes with the Seagate models, they have mixed reviews.I don't have a a USB2.0 Firewire connection on my PC.
