2008 - What Does the Future Hold

This past week, while at the Grand American Road Racing tire tests at Daytona Speedway (2008 will see Pirelli tires), I spoke with Michelle Flis regarding the status of the two Infiniti cars. The cars are currently at the Flis Motorsports / Spirit of Daytona facility in Ormond Beach, where they have been kept since their last appearance. The possibility to run these cars still exists. As is common in motorsports, the team (HLM) needs an influx of money, either sponorship or new / additional ownership. They are very good cars, and were underperformers due more to the Menard motors than anything else. I also spoke with Joey Hand who drove them, and he spoke very highly of the cars.If only we can get someone to come on board, these cars can be ready to run in a very short period of time. Unfortuantely, I don't see Nissan / Infiniti USA caring much about their USA road racing efforts anymore.Sput

Updates on Tube chassis G35 HRM

I heard it was being re-skinned and ran as something elseI think it would have been a little cheaper to run a tub car and develop the engine than to start out with a full tube chassis car from new jigs with new engines! Monumental task!!Anyone here deny or confirm that Grand Am will have Crawford spec tube chassis' in the near futureThe pics of this G35 chassis.. sure do look a LOT like the Crawford Corvette and the Crawford Pontiac. My trained eye says they are all running the same chassis with different powerplants and different skins. Sounds like the making of a Nascar series.. oh wait.. Grand Am is owned by Nascar..LOLB

Race Report

Hi Everyone,Sorry it has taken me so long to get to the web site and give everyone an update, but hopefully the saying still stands, better late than never. For all of you who watched the race you know we fell out about nine hours into the race, just as it started to get dark. T.V. does not do a great job at reporting a lot of time so some of you may be wondering what happend, and I am sad to report that we had minor engine problems. It was a great week for the Team HLM Infiniti Crawford, this was the first real test we were able to put the car through, and the time we were really able to throw changes at the car, and we made a lot of progress. The car was second quickest in the first practice on Friday which opend a lot of eyes. Thank you all for your support I, as well as all my other co-drivers truly appreciate your time and efforts to put our Infiniti on the map! Let me know if you have any questions. All my Best.Bryan

Fan Crew Coming Soon!

Sorry about the long wait but the fan crew club will be coming soon. I am working on also getting our full line of apparel on the website. I am also trying to get a super package put together where you could actually drive our race car on track. This package will probably run about $1,000 but it truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Our regular crew club package will be around $80 when I'm finished up. If you have any ideas of what you would like to see included in a crew club membership or any merchandise that you would like to see post it.

UPDATE from Qualifying - Daytona

There's not a lot to report, but on the first practice session, the car got a good shakedown, running strong. Both Brian and Joey are happy with the driveability of the Team HLM G35GT, and they were in the top 10 on a wet track.During the second session they experienced a power loss which was quickly traced back to the timing chain tensioner. Unfortunately, this resulted in floated valves, necessitating an engine change. This prevented the G from making the first round of qualifying, so they'll have to qualify tomorrow. The top 20 cars were locked in today, so the best we can hope for is 21st starting spot... but its a long race.Let's wish Bryan and Joey the best of luck tomorrow - Let's get ready to RUMBLE!

UPDATE: Final Testing at VIR

We caught up with the TEAM HLM / NICOclub G35GT at VIR, undergoing final testing for the 2007 season before its debut at the 24 Hours of Daytona. The Team HLM / NICOclub G35 ran just one second off last year's record pace at VIR, which means the car is well-sorted... There were a couple issue with insufficient dampener softness, but new parts have been ordered to remedy this. Also, due to the extreme cold, tire temps remained under 180 degrees, which means there was still a LOT of speed available. The Menard's-prepped VK45DE was screaming, and felt ready to rock.Driver positions have been sorted, with Bryan Sellers and Joey Hand piloting the G35, and a surprise European driver rounding out the team. We'll have coverage and updates right up to the start of Daytona and as the race progresses, so check in often!

Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona 2007

I have received my 2007 Grand-Am membership 'hard card', I should be ready to go to several events again this year. Although we were forced to miss Daytona test days, it looks good right now for getting to the 24 Hours at Daytona later this month. The 2007 event schedule ( http://www.grand-am.com/CONTEN..._2007% ) and entry list ( http://www.grand-am.com/Events...D=175 ) are up.The #45 TEAM HLM Infiniti Crawford is listed to race, with drivers;Doc Bundy, Gainesville, GAJohn Lewis, Birmingham, ALBryan Sellers, Centerville, OHJoey Hand, Sacramento, CAand sponsor eautomall.com .These are some familiar names, and I really look forward to seeing Joey Hand at the wheel. Doc Bundy makes a very interesting (wonderful) addition to this line-up.I have not yet confirmed this, but the word from Daytona test days was these four drivers will be split for the shorter races this year, with two drivers in this #45 and two drivers in the #54 Infiniti Crawford. If you look at the Grand-Am entry list, you will notice the team is listed as Howard Motorsports. Again, I have not been able to confirm this with anyone at Team HLM, Howard Motorsports, or Crawford Race Cars, but I have read the reason for this was to gain preferential garage and pit assignment as part of Howard Motorsports and the two Daytona Prototypes they will be running at the 24 Hours of Daytona. The TV package will include FoxSports and SpeedTV. Also you can listen to the webcast and good friend & announcer Mike (just pazzin thru) Paz via the Grand-AM website. They also carry a live Timinf & Scoring webpage. Also, if you would like to chat on line during the race, I know there will be a chat session through the Cognoscenti at http://www.garra-fans.com.Sput

Hi Everyone,I wanted to take a second and let everyone know how great it is to have supporters. The new web site looks great we are all very impressed. So now for the things that everyone wants to hear about. The car rolled out in Daytona for what would be its first real test. The car sounded great and looked even better. We had a few teething problems, but nothing that was not solved and nothing that was unexpected. I feel like the car showed tons of potential and was a blast to drive. I think this will be a car that will win races! Keep watching.Bryan

Sput, I know u are kind of running this whole thing so i though i would point out what would appear to be a mistake. In the specs on the car it says it weighs 2300 lbs but in the rules it says min. weight is 2540 lbs. Maybe that is without ballast, i dont know, I just thought i would help you be as accurate as possible. Can't wait to see the car at the Test Days.

Visit to Team HLM Race Shop

Over this past summer, I had the privilege to stop by the current Team HLM Race Shop. You can find the shop in the downtown section of Dayton, Ohio. The shop is nestled in an industrial park with offices in the front and the race shop in the back.During this past summer not to much action was going on around the shop. Crawford was still developing the cars, down in Charlotte. However, Alex Moore was in the office answering the phones and handling business. Alex graciously gave me a tour through the shop taking us by the offices and into the race shop. I was impressed by the cleanliness and the organization of the shop. In addition, I noticed that all the necessary equipment and components of going to the races were all present just waiting to be loaded up and taken to the race track. The only thing sitting in the garage was the team's G35 show car sitting on one of the lifts along with some machining equipment. Out back behind the shop laid the teams old but trusty hauler. With the 2007 Grand-AM season just around the corner, the race shop will be a busy place. We will continue to keep you up to date with Team HLM as the Rolex 24 approaches. More Testing in Homestead is next on the agenda

Visit to Crawford Race Cars

This week I was able to visit Crawford Race Cars / Crawford Composites in North Carolina. I would like to thank Trudie & Jan Crawford, along with everyone at the shop, for their hospitality once again.Below are some of the photos I was able to take. In addition to their main business, manufacturing of composite materials, mainly for the racing industry, the other two significant sections of their facility are the Crawford Race Cars area, where they manufacture / build / assemble / repair the Daytona Prototype and GT chassis, and Howard Motorsports (Rick Howard). These photos are from the Howard Motorsports area, where crew members were currently doing some repairs and maintenace to three of the Daytona Prototypes, the #2, #20 & #16.Both the new G35 Infiniti GT's were there. The first car, which tested at Daytona, was in between steps of maintenance. The second car, still in it's black carbon fibre nekkidness, appears close to completion. I would hazard a guess that items being tweaked, developed, & finished on the first car will be completed before the second car is finished. At the Daytona testing, Team HLM experienced the new car problems everyone would face with a new car & team, and worked well to overcome a great deal. Currently it appears they will be trying to make the Miami-Homestead in December, but if some of the corrections and upgrades can't be completed in time, it is possible the next test session for the Infinitis won't be until the January 2007 Daytona test. I won't be able to get to the Homestead test, but Jacob & I are planning to get to the Daytona test days.ENJOY!Sput

TEAM HLM DEBUTS NEW INFINITI G35 AT DAYTONAThe long-awaited Infiniti G35 for Team HLM made its first official appearance at the Rolex Series Daytona test with 2003 Daytona Prototype champion Terry Borcheller and American road racing standout Bryan Sellers sharing the controls of the No. 45 machine. As is the case with most new cars, the Crawford-designed Infiniti had its share of teething problems during the test, but Sellers was optimistic for the cars future.Theres definitely a lot going on, Sellers said. Its always tough when you debut a brand-new car, because when you get one problem solved, another one comes up. The good thing is, when weve had some clean laps, the car has been responsive. Were not having the same issues all the time. The fact that the car is here is a tribute to Max Crawford and all the guys at Crawford Race Cars. The car was originally supposed to debut in March, but I think it was a good choice to delay the car to get things sorted out. Its been good today to get things sorted out for the future.Sellers was to have driven the car in Rolex Series events in 2006, and has not wrapped up a deal yet for the 2007 season. However, he would welcome the opportunity to remain with Team HLM.Hopefully, theyre happy with me and what Ive done and theyll want to keep me around, Sellers said. I think its a good program and has a lot of potential. The No. 35 machine had run only 15 laps in test sessions at Virginia International Raceway and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course before its appearance at the Daytona test.

Team HLM Update from the Owners

Welcome to all the NICO members from the Team HLM group.Let me introduce myself, Frank Howard, one of the principals in Howard & Law Motorsports along with Peter Law, Darren Law's father (drives the Brumos Red Bull Daytona Prototype). There are many articles about the team out on the web describing our philosophy on motorsports. Google "Team HLM" to find out some more information. But, in a nutshell we feel that to produce a product that can survive the test of time a company must first have the money to run a top notch organization. By securing the money we can then reinvest in our team for the future. After all, transporters, cars, crew, etc. wear out, retire, and need repaired.Motorsports and particularly sports car racing have not had a great deal of success in the US for a number of reasons but mostly because of the lack of funding for teams because of the impact of auto manufacturers and short sighted sanctioning bodies. The trouble with auto companies doing the funding is that when they get the information they need for their production cars then the money dries up and thus the teams go away. Another problem has been sanctioning bodies have let costs and technology get so out of hand that only a choice few have been able to compete thus small car counts thus poor racing thus series collapse.Let me also add at this point that very few forms of racing can be funded through having a "sponsor" put their name on the car. A front running car in our series will generate about $300,000 of air time value from the Speed Network. Our budget is in the $5,000,000 range, so as you can see the advertising value is not enough to get a company to give you their hard earned money. BTW, the only series that has that kind of attraction is NASCAR and even they can't squeeze enough money in advertising to make it viable. We decided on the Rolex Grand American Road Racing Series because we feel they have a real strong business model dedicated to:1) having strong competitive racing, equality and car counts2) making sure we give the fans a good value3) keeping costs to a reasonable level so we can keep car counts up and prices down for the fans. We really have a lot of confidence in the people at Grand AM. Jim France and Roger Edmundson run a great ship. Now to answer some of the questions I've seen on the site. Forgive me if I've missed some but in due time we'll answer as many as we can. The Team HLM G35's are a race car built from the ground up by Crawford Race Cars, LTD. These cars are tube chassis'd with all carbon fibre body work. Our rules state that the car must maintain the recognizable shape as a production car with stock mirrors, taillight covers, headlight covers, and door handles. The wing is also a specified wing meaning every GT car is running the same one. BTW, our cars are inspected throughout the build process and approved by Grand AM officials for compliance to the rules. Our engine is a 4.5L Infiniti V8 build by Menard's Engineering in Indianapolis. Our rules state, again approved by Grand Am, that we're allowed any engine that is in the family of cars, thus the 4.5L was approved but it is a very stringent approval process. First we build an engine, submit that to Grand AM, then they approve that engine building procedure and parts and supply us with what our car will have to weight. Thus there is not need to build a high tech 900 HP engine because we will just have additional weight added to the car. This keeps cars relatively within the same HP to weight ratio thus truly competitive racing.Come and see us at VIR. Alex Moore (Business Development Manager), Bryan Sellers (driver), and me will be at the track with the car. Max Crawford, owner Crawford Race Cars, and Andy Scriven, the engineer that designed the car will also be on hand. BTW, Andy was the chief designer of the Lola-Nissan Group C prototype and worked on the design of the Jaguar Group C V12 engine / LeMans effort. for you sports car fans.I hope this gives you some inside information to the team efforts. We are very happy to be teamed up the NICO folks and look forward to having a very special "fan crew club". You're going to hear a lot of information about this shortly but suffice it to say it will be unique with lots and lots of inside scoop. Again, please post any questions and we'll try to answer as many as possible. Some answers may be require confidential information and I won't reveal any of that but I otherwise we'll do our best.

Infiniti returns to racing!

DAYTONA BEACH (November 27, 2005)-The newly formed Team HLM has announced today that they will be competing in the 2006 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series GT division. American Frank Howard and Australian Peter Law have carefully combined their more than 30 years of motorsports experience and professional experience gained from working in the top business executive and entrepreneurial environments to create a synergy of resources that they are confident will yield impressive results both on and off of the racetrack. Team HLM will lead the two-car program that brings together Crawford Race Cars for chassis development and Menards Engineering International, who will focus on developing the 4.5 L Infiniti V-8 engine package. Team HLM aims at creating a fresh business-to-business approach as a partner to world-class racing action in an organization that can deliver top results in both areas. After months of discussions we agreed in principal that the Grand American world could support a race team using contemporary business principals, explained Frank Howard. As such we created a company, Howard & Law Motorsports, to manage a race team, Team HLM. We studied suppliers and marketing opportunities and settled on Infiniti G35 Coupe, Crawford Race Cars, and MEI as our business partners. The support from Infiniti has been fantastic along with our strong working relationships with Max Crawford and Chris Sumner (MEI).This relationship is everything I thought it would be, added Peter Law. We have made the right decisions and were meeting all of our goals. From the financial side, our business partners are lining up perfectly for us both from a timing and volume standpoint. From the personnel side, we are working carefully to develop Team HLM into an organization that not only has a clear and defined focus, but that can also execute with precision and perfection.Team HLM is based in Dayton, Ohio and has additional commercial offices in Phoenix, Arizona. Veteran racing professional Geoff Carter, who brings more than a decade of diverse motorsports experience to the outfit, is leading the final operational preparations as the team readies for its official launch during the prestigious Rolex 24 at Daytona January 26-29, 2006 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida at which time the full team and driver line-up will be announced. Team HLM will then finish a testing schedule to make its competition debut March 25 at the Grand Prix of Miami at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.
