DC Region SCCA - PDX & Club Trials Oct 31 - Nov 1

Just wanted to make sure everyone knew about this - might make a nice early Christmas gift for a loved one. PDX (performance driving experience) both days, Club Trials on Sunday, all on the full Shenandoah Circuit at Summit Point Raceway. There will also be some Halloween festivities going on Saturday evening. Also worth mentioning, the DC Region has the "work 3, get one free" deal going on for workers, so if nothing else come on out and wave a flag (or at least stand there holding one) or help out in some other way, and earn credit toward a free PDX. If I'm not mistaken free days are transferable to friends or family.More info on the DC website: http://www.wdcr-scca.org/TimeT....aspx.

Grand Prix Shootout

Hi Guys,I have a friend Stevan McAleer http://www.db.com/grandprixshootout/ who is an aspiring race car driver that's had great success through the various ranks(even victory over Lewis Hamilton is Karting) with the only thing limiting him being the exuberant costs of the sport...much like everything else in life in racing you gotta pay to play. The reason for this post is he's trying to enter a major competition http://www.db.com/grandprixshootout/ which can be his catapult to the upper echelon of the sport and even though theres a hefty entry fee theres also a way 3 drivers can be allowed to compete for free if they receive enough votes. There are 150 drivers competing for the 3 spots so I want to do my best to help out a friend who is so close to achieving a dream he's pursued his entire life. You can vote(ends September 30th) individually a maximum of 7 times at http://www.db.com/grandprixshootout/.If you can find the time to vote it will be greatly appreciated, or if you can get friends to vote through facebook, myspace, etc. I would be hardstruck to find a word to express my gratitude. Once again this is in support for a friend looking to do positive & great things in his life so i'm doing my best to help him the same way I would help anyone who has come to me for help in something this ambitious and positive. I posted here because I feel you guys have enough love for the sport that you would at least give it a once over, and how insane would it be if we can help place a driver on the grid in F1 in years to come. Thank You So Much,FUNS14

Are there any class options

Hi Folks,'Purchased a 240 hatch last year with intentions to fulfill my long overdue KA-T itch. This is my second S13 build (the first NA) and it's just something I'd like to accomplish with this chassis.Just curious to know if there's a low/mid-end class of sanctioned road racing that allows forced induction KA's. I don't plan to be head-over into competitive racing (mostly because I don't think I have the financial backing to sustain it), but I'd like to at least have a class to run in. A lot of this is motivated by the fact that it seems easier in some ways to build a car to a set of sanctioned rules than to try and keep it street legal. The SCCA doesn't seem to be too friendly to this type of setup. NASA SRX allows the SR only in S13 chassis, and the others I'v seen mentioned are running with the big boys. What are your thoughts I understand the paradigm that you should 'build the car for the class', (and not the other way around), but there has to be a legit way to get some seat time.FYI I tracked my last S13 half a dozen times on unofficial HPDE days out west, and I suppose *that* itch never left me.Thanks for reading.'Slip

Hi... I was wondering what brake pads people run on their cars when they auto-x. I have a '92 240sx with Iron Z32 brakes upfront and stock rears, SS lines, with a '89 Z BMC. I am running Hawk HPS Pads all around and I have done pretty well with them. I was thinking about using the Hawk HP plus pads in the front for the next event. What do you guys think

I am building a ls3 powered road car and am running low on funds, so I was looking into the obx helical. Not only is it a low cost alternative but it won't require a rebuild like a clutch type. I am mainly wondering if anyone is even putting 600hp through the OBX or even the S15 helical. If anyone knows of any other maker of a non clutch/viscious lsd or useable info about the OBX(there site sucks) please inform me.

Preparing 240sx for SCCA STS; Wheels, VLSD, Emissions, Coil-Overs

I'm preparing my 240sx for the STS division of SCCA and I have a few questions. Keep in mind, I am trying to keep this as budget oriented as possible.First off, obviously there is not a wide selection of wheels for a 4 lug 240sx, but I can't justify spending 500$ just for new hubs. Does anyone have any recommendations for 17x7.5 wheels I have a few choices, mostly Rotas, but I am not sure on offset, any ideasSecond, I am new to SCCA and I am not exactly sure how the class rules work. I understand that I cannot add an aftermarket LSD but how about a 240sx VLSD off of a HICAS car My car is a 91, so from what I've read, only the HICAS cars had the VLSD. Is it legal for me to put one in despite the fact my car did not come with one from the factoy If I can add one, are the '95 ,'96 J30 VLSDs the exact same unit or do I need one specifically from a 240sx with VLSDThird, What exactly is SCCA standards for emissions I have not messed with any of the emissions on the KA because STS supposedly has to be "emissions-legal". How exactly do they differentiate between emissions legal and illegal I assume it means no tapering with stock emissions equipment but I hate all of this clutter under my hood....As of right now, all I really plan on doing is coil-overs and wheels (hopefully a VLSD). Probably going with the STANCE GR+ Pros. Any experiances/opinioins people can share about these would be great...Appreciate any insight

Tokico HP shocks with stock springs

I'm running a stock 92 240SX in a local Street Tire class. As long as I stick to the SCCA stock rules I run with a GS PAX, all the cars in our local Street Tire class must run street tires. The car REALLY needs new shocks so I've been doing some research and have narrowed my choices down to either KYB AGX or Tokico HP (blues). I don't want to spend a lot on shocks for this car because I'm only auto-xing it this season while I finish the body work on a 73 240Z.So for the money which shock would be a better purchase to run with stock springs and suspension

Lightweight sway bar for the 240SX

Cross-post from the suspension forum - hopefully I won't need to explain why I'm asking over here too:I'm looking for a lightweight sway bar for my ITA 240SX, and am not having much luck finding information on weight for the various manufacturers. Tanabe specifically mentions light weight as one of the advantages of their bars, but I'm assuming any of the hollow chromemoly type bars are going to be considerably lighter than a solid bar. Weight is more important to me than stiffness in this case, as I can fine tune the suspension with the spring/struts as needed. Anybody been down this road already Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,Earl

Cross-post from the suspension forum - hopefully I won't need to explain why I'm asking over here too:
I'm looking for a lightweight sway bar for my ITA 240SX, and am not having much luck finding information on weight for the various manufacturers.
Anybody been down this road already? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Earl

http://www.vimeo.com/4338155 One of my better laps of Summit Point Main circuit. during a few of my sessions i was running consistent times to this lap, and one had slightly faster, maybe 1 sec faster. The car is becoming very dialed in, small changes now are showing more controllable results at the track, which makes it easier to go fast. more playing with tire pressures and dampening settings and i think she will be set for optimal results. My goal is to close in on the NASA HC 1 times, and then add aero and more boost to help progress from there. Until then no changes except maybe some mild weight changes, and tire pressures/dampening settings of course.let me know what you guys think.

See how Nitto won the 25 Hours of Thunderhill [new site launch]

Nitto Tire and Team Achilles Motorsports recently raced in the world's longest endurance race: 25 Hours of Thunderhill. They competed in the fastest D.O.T. tire class using Nitto NT01 tires. This is the second fastest class behind the Unlimited class that uses race slicks. Nitto created a new website that documents the race as it unfolded. Even though the team had a shaky start, the race was one of the closest on record. Early in the race the team was forced to pit and make needed repairs, which put them four laps down. Then, as they tried to regain their track position, a dense fog settled over the track, making it difficult to see more than a few car lengths ahead. The fog forced officials to stop the race for over 11 hours. After the restart, the team is starting to catch up to the first-place team. But is it enough timeAfter weeks of prep and hours of racing, the race came down to a few crucial seconds. Click here to see how history was made.Screen Shot:Nitto NT01If you have any questions or comments please click here to contact Nitto Tire. This PostRelease is part of an advertiser-supported program that sponsors NICOclub.
B14 Sentra GXE Autocross STS build

Newbie here, but not to autocross. I read everything I could find on the B14 for racing.I need some help preparing my son's car for local autox competition.1998 Sentra GXE completely stock.I'll need the following:Coilovers (prefer DB adj.) with upper ball joints and camber plates. I'm use to high end coilovers such as Moton, Ohlins, JRZ, etc. However, this is for my son so a budget coilover is a must ($800-1200). Spring rates will be custom and prefer 2.5" springs vs mm. Newbie here, but not to autocross. I read everything I could find on the B14 for racing.
I need some help preparing my son's car for local autox competition.
1998 Sentra GXE completely stock.
I'll need the following:
Coilovers (prefer DB adj.) with upper ball joints and camber plates. I'm use to high end coilovers such as Moton, Ohlins, JRZ, etc. However, this is for my son so a budget coilover is a must ($800-1200). Spring rates will be custom and prefer 2.5" springs vs mm.
justifing Brake swap.

Im having trouble justifying the extra work and cost of swapping my 5lug & Z32 Front brakes (s14 rear) from my defunct hatch to my new convertible.Besides the cool factor, Im not seeing that many really great benefits. The current brakes feel fine. And Im sure will do nicely once I get some good pads, rotors, steel lines and super blue brake fluid. If I do swap them over, I will also need new pads and rotors right away on the z32, whereas i think i could probably run a few events on what is currently on the vert, diverting that cost a bit. Also, the wheels Im ordering will have an extra charge for 5lug vs 4lug.On the hatch I was always a little disappointed by the pedal feel and the extra front brake bias. The flat spots on my front tires agree with me (i wasnt the only driver)I think I would be content just upgrading what is currently on the convertible, but my only concern is that they will be able to handle the extra weight and speed over a 20 min on track lapping session, even with the better pads, rotors, super blue, and steel lines.

1/4 mile racing advice

Hey Guys,I have a friend that wants to go down to the track and race his 1972 Corvette against my 2009 G37S Coupe over the 1/4 mile straight track. He says his Corvette which has a 350 in it will beat the 2009 G37.We are going to go to a legal track and I wanted to get some advice since I do not race.Dont worry, I am going to practice and work up slowly.Do I run the race using the normal automatic drive mode or will I get the best times using the drive sport mode If it is the drive sport mode, is it best to shift just before red line or is it better to shift at around 5200 rpms where the maximum torque isThanks,Geoff

Is it time for a Tire upgrade

Hello everyone, hope you are all doing well.I competed in my first autocross event this year trying to remember the auto-x tips I learned from my instructor from a day long auto-x school from a year ago. Then I beat my instructors time, and now I feel like I did quite well. From the first time out on the course I came up with a goal time and improved just over 7 seconds to meet my goal time for the day. However, when I met my goal time for the day, I felt like I could have done better. While Im definitely driving the car much much smoother than the auto-x school from last year, and I definitely see how smoother is faster; At the end of the day I was slightly disappointed.I saw potential for improvement in several areas of the course. Which prolly attributed to my relatively novice abilities, with this auto-x having been my 4th auto-x. My final time of the day was the fastest, yet I saw these areas in which I could definitely improve. The tires I am running are my daily driven tires. Ive had them since 2004, with roughly 70% treadwear left in them. And they have competed in 2 Auto-x events, last years and this past weekend. They are the Bravuris Barum tires with a treadwear rating of 350. So My question is....Is it time to upgrade my tires Or can I still run these tires trying to etch out areas where I believe I can improve at the next auto-x. There were 13 cars in the novice class and with pax I nearly placed, I was off .5 secondsThanks alot for your input

Wheel width VS wheel weight

So heres my dilema. I'm building a 92 s13HB to run in autocross. Class restrictions state that I'm limited to a 7.5" wide wheel and a 225 wide tire. I've narrowed it down to a few styles, I'm just not sure which way to go.Option 1: Rota RB's 17x7.5 with a +20 offset. Exact weight is unknown, but roughly 18-19 pounds.Option 2: Centerline forged 17x7 with a +40 offset and 15mm wheel spacers to give me a +25 offset. And the centerlines weigh just under 15 pounds, and under $500.Cost wise, (after buying the spacers) they would both end up within a few dollars of each other. Either way I go, they will end up with Kumho Ecsta XS 225/45/17 tires on them. What would I be giving up by going with a slightly smaller yet lighter rim What would I gain by going with a slightly heavier yet wider rim Or is it so close at this point that any gains or losses would be minimal

Question, what are mods most over looked by the avg or new driver, ones that would provide a great advantage. Example, Diffs/gear ratios, uncommon chassie bracing... Foam filling rails etc.. whats good whats not I've been planing to buy some re-enforced and notched lower control arms with modified spindles, that change the steering ratio and decrease the turning radius.

240SX anti-sway bar size

I have a 1992 240SX SE with ABS, a VLSD and the Super Hicas rear end. I plan to auto-x it this coming season and was hoping to run GS PAX index in our local street tire class. In preparation for the first event this next weekend I was under the car on Sat. checking all the bushings and generally making sure all was cool when I noticed the front and rear sway bars were bigger than I expected. I measured them with a vernier caliper, they are 26mm front and 22mm rear. I found a link to a thread on this site that listed stock sway bar sizes (24mm front and 16mm rear). There was a set of OE bars mentioned that were available from Courtesy Nissan listed at 25mm and 21mm respectively. So are the bars I have stock and if not are they the ones from Courtesy NissanIf they are from Courtesy Nissan are they considered stock according to the SCCA Solo 2 rulesI looked but couldn't find any stamps or stickers that identify them and I scraped the dirt off before measuring so the values are accurate.

The Connecticut Autocross and Rally Team (CART) will be hosting its frist track event of 2009 at the Pocono North Course on Friday May 8th. Cost is $215. 4 or 5 run sessions with a time trial and team relay event at the end. Carlisle is a mere 2hrs from Pocono, so why don't you come track your car on Friday, drive to Nicofest after, and have a great story to tell of running on the high banks of Pocono.

Connecticut Auto-x and Rally Team Track 2009 Track Schedule

Its still early in the year but the Connecticut Autocross and Rally Team has been hard at work getting their track and auto-x schedule set for 2009.For those that are in the Tristate or New England area, this is a great way to try you car out in what is was meant to do. No experience is necessary as we offer instructors through the day.We have set up 6 track days so far; 4 at Pocono, 1 at Limerock in CT and 1 at the brand new New Jersey Motorsports Park (Lightning Course). Here are the dates.May 8th Pocono, North CourseMay 29 NJMP, Lightning CourseJune 18 Limerock, CT (no time trial)July 20 Pocono, South CourseAugust 28 Pocono, North CourseSept 28 Pocono, All Circuits, YES ALL CIRCUITS!!!!Pricing is dependant on event, but I can assure you, CART has some of the cheapest pricing around. Plus unlike other clubs that have track days, CART offers a time trial at the end where you get 2 officially timed laps to place in your respected class. On top of that, we have whats called a team relay event. If you have any questions, contact me, Liam at ldstang50@yahoo.comWe are not particular to any car, we welcome any and all cars so long they pass tech.

So what is a good starter setup suspension wise for an auto-x car

Ive decided to turn my street car into a grip monster. Here is my current mod list-Chassis:1993 FastbackEngine:Redtop - t3/t4 50 trim + fuel mods+nistuneBasic Bolt ons (power range 350-400whp)Suspension/Brakes/Wheels/Tires:Tein Flex Coiloversz32 brakes and master cylinder w/stock 240sx rear brakesTien Tension rods, tie rodsPeak Performance RUCACarbonetic 1.5way diffHotwheels 17 x 9 - 255/40/17 all around AzenisFactory Sways F/RWhen guys ask for the recipe for how to make 400whp cars, what is the recipe to make my car able to keep up with the more expensive cars on the open track days. The car is only driven on the streets to play around with, other than that it is my garage queen. What other suspension components do I need. I am allready planning on selling my tiens for KW's. I have about a 2500.00 budget to finish off the suspension on my car. I am not planning on building a grip only car here. Id like for it to beable to do as much as possible. Drag, Auto-x and possibly even a little drifting.

(autoXX) Can the 240sx chassis compete with the top dogs...

I guess i'm just curious if the S-chassis has the potential to compete with the big boys out on the tracks I've been browsing the net and i've been hearing that a couple guys who compete in the National SCCA events get fustarated with their 240's due to the limit of the chassis...I know some of ya are going to refer to driving skills...but skill for skill can the S-chassis compete I've had my 240 for over a good 5years now and still love it! I'm thinking about competing seriously this year at my local autoX events and joining the SCCA club. Does anyone here run at the national events How does ur S-chassis hold up! Any input would be great. Thanks.

Did the Nissan 240sx ever race in SSC / SSB

Im wanting to know if the 240sx ever raced in Showroom Stock C or Showroom Stock B (SCCA Runoffs)This is all i found on the SCCA website. It just explains about how the cars are classed.SHOWROOM STOCK CATEGORY Late-model, mass-produced street cars like those bought right off the showroom floor. Aside from a bolt-in roll cage and safety equipment, there are very few modifications allowed to the cars. If the car is older than 10 years, it cant compete. Classed by performance potential into two classes: Showroom Stock B (SSB) and Showroom Stock C (SSC).Each class has over 30 different cars eligible to compete within that class. SSB is made up of entries like the Acura RSX-S, BMW Z-4, Honda Civic, Mazda MX-5 and Pontiac Solstice. SSC is the slower, but no less exciting Showroom Stock class and includes cars such as the Chevy Cobalt , Honda Civic Si, and Mazda3.Many of the drivers in Showroom Stock move up to compete in the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge Championships.

Keep the harnesses off the street

I read a random post the other night that said that a racing harness (assumed to be 5pt) is more dangerous on the street than the stock seatbelts. Can anyone explain the reason behind this, or debunk the claimI could see why you wouldn't want a roll cage on the street, but I would think you'd be better protected with a 5pt (from sliding out of seat, and side to side even). Cheers,Jamie

s13/s14 subframe bushing for non-metal autox classes

Just to post what I found a while agohttp://mmr-direct.com/catalog1/S13/index.htmAbout UHMW: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UHMWThese are solid plastic bushings, almost as hard as aluminum, and help you fix that clunk in the rear and wheel hop, without getting bumped out of a racing class that prohibits metal bushings. They are made for s13 but will fit s14 as well.As you see, MMR also makes solid UHMW engine + tranny mounts for pretty cheap.I'm using their subframe bushings, Energy suspension z32 diff bushings, Nismo tranny mount and Windo-Weld filled motor mounts. All the slack that remains is probably from the motor/tranny mounts. No complaint about the MMR stuff, except that the rear end got a bit noisy for a street car (but it could also be my ring&pinion not meshing properly)Btw I'd choose a plastic-metal contact over metal-metal contact (as with any aluminum part touching steel) because of galvanic corrosion possibility of the latter.

2009 MVP Track Time ScheduleMVP Track Time (http://www.MVPTrackTime.com) is very excited to announce our expanded track day schedule for the 2009 track season. After several years of successful events on the Midwests premier tracks, we are looking East at some of North Americas most historic tracks. The Big 5 (Road America, Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen and Mid-Ohio) have always been on MVPs radar. Adding Watkins Glen and Road Atlanta for 2009 gets us 2/5 way there. If/when we find partners out West, Laguna Seca will become a reality and IF (notice BIG if) we can secure a workable dates at Road America and Mid Ohio we will complete the Big 5 circle. As many are feeling the effects of the economic downturn, MVP is attempting to keep pricing the same as 2008. With all the economic bad news, I hope this reaches you as some good news. We aim to bring the best track value to you. Below you will find our tentative 2009 schedule, subject to revision as necessary. April 18-19: Putnam Park "Tax Freedom Track Weekend" - SOLD OUT!June 1: Autobahn Country Club (FULL 3.56 mile track) - SOLD OUT!August 3: Autobahn Country Club II (FULL 3.56 mile track) - SOLD OUT!September 5-6: Blackhawk Farms "No Hurricane Rain Track Weekend" November 21 - 22: Road Atlanta "Flyin Turkey Trot" Now that Spring has arrived, I hope youll gear up for some much needed fresh air and join MVP Track Time at the track. Happy Motoring and I hope to see you at the track in 2009!
