blowing coolant out exhaust

1990 240 s14sr20det , new head gasket less than a month ago, had an exhaust leak at the turbo inlet gasket so I replaced the stock manifold with an Isis manifold and new manifold and turbo inlet gasket, on the test ride I had amazing power gains but in 5 mins I noticed white smoke out the exhaust smelled like coolant. Thinking it may be seals in turbo is this a possibility or did i blow out a new cometic head gasket thanks for ur advise in advance.

HELP! No Spark No Fuel

hey guys, I'm having a big problem trying to get spark and fuel from my engine. Not sure what it could be. Trying to get some ideas goingok so i tried doing a wire tuck and finished it. Not the greatest, but not the worst. I depinned and repinned all the plugs and wire back into place. (I took pictures of each one making sure i put them back in the right place) I grounded everything that was on the engine bay harness and on the chassis harness too. I just finished rebuilding my engine I set the timing with the CAS, but it says to align the notch with the orange dot. But I didn't have a orange dot, but I did it to the dot that looked like the one on heavythrottle website. I double checked the my wiring with someone else on Nico who did a tuck and mine are pined back exactly like his. I have already checked for power to the injectors and coils with my multimeter nothing. The fuel pump primes because you can hear it and my FPR gauge shows it going to 43 psi and drops down to 23 psi after it stops priming. I know the CAS works because when I have the car turned o the "on" position with the key and I plug the CAS plug in, you hear the fuel pump priming. I took the plug out of the MAF to throw it into limp mode, but still nothing.I took the ECU apart checking for burn marks, seeing if the ECU might have burnt out, but nothing was burnt. I turned the car to "on" position and I check the ECU for power and there is power. I tried another friends ECU, though it's a tuned ECU, but should still be able to get the car to start, and the same thing happened. No spark no fuel. So only thing I can think of is a bad ground, maybe a relay or fuse. just trying to get some ideas going to see what else to test for. But i was trying to test the voltage of the CAS and I got numbers that were way weaker than what they're suppose to be. Think I remember reading somewhere it's suppose to be reading 2-3V when cranking, but I was only reading 0.15-0.2V when it was cranking. Can anyone telling if this is correctoh and also forgot to add. I checked the igniter chip. there was no signal from the ecu going to the igniter chip. i tried all 4 wires and nothing on anyone. so this is what lead me to a bad CAS or a bad ground. going to check for a ECCS relay over by the driver door tomorrow and check for voltage in the ground int he ECU. Car: 89 coupeEngine: S13 sr20det blacktopEcu: E5thanks in advance

Picked up an engine stand tonight and popped out all the pistons. Found a cylinder 3 rod knock.Havn't taken the crank out yet so not sure how those bearings look yet. I think they will be okay though.I hope I can get away with just repolishing the crank and new main and rod bearingsAlso I need to know if I can reuse these main and rod bolts/nuts or if they need to be replaced

SR20DET going to machine shop tomorrow

Ok so I am taking the engine to the machine shop tomorrow. I had what I believe to be valve vs. piston impact damage...I was going to originally go with just a full stock rebuild but decided to go ahead and have the block/head built for 300+ HP.I have the stock t25 on the car at the moment with FMIC, Mishimoto radiator, Profec II Boost controller, etc..I want to do pistons, valves, springs, etc. as well as hot tanking it to clean it up, port/polish, and 3 angle-valve job. I do not know that much about machine shops and what they are capable of, but what I am looking for is advice on parts to go in to the build. I have around 2500 to 3,000 $ available for the build and I want to reach 300HP but have the car be able to go much higher with just fuel upgrades and a new turbo (and tune, of course).I plan on going with an Enthralpy tune.So far I have my eyes on the Enjuku's BC package for $800. I may or may not upgrade my cams to 264s, as I heard this creates more low-end lag and I'm running the t25 at the moment. Please give any advice you can and help me spend my money for reliability and power :Thanks in advance!!!

so just finished parting together and rebuilding my friends sr20det blacktop, put it in his 240sx and its not getting any spark. i checked to see if the coil packs are getting a 12 volt source and there not, i haven't checked for the signal yet because im waiting on my friend to get over here since that is a to person job. just wondering if you guys have any idea what it could be or where i should go from here. this is a list of things we had to get to make it a full motor set, ecu, cas, coil packs, nock sensor, o2 sensor, single cam maf, ignitor chip, and the full wiring, all these parts we bought were used but looked like they were in really good condition.

S13 Redtop transmission fluid question

I've already installed my SR20 into my Datsun 510 and I CANNOT get the bolt out that lets you know when your transmission is filled up with fluid. Some people tell me that you put a little less than 2 quarts and someone told me you put 3 quarts. And I know everyone says to use redline stuff, but I used valvoline 75w90 synthetic gear oil, is that bad or what And I've already put 2 quarts in the tranny, I haven't driven it yet though. So how much do you put in it

Hi fist off want to say awesome site everybody!!! Now I just bought a 89 240 hatch and it has an Redtop SR20DE non turbo RWD in it. From what i have been told it a rarer motor to find so when i found out what he wanted i couldnt resist. Ok the issue is that it starts fine but when you get to roughly 2500 RPM it cuts out and backfires. far as I know he changed to a skinny o2, Q45 MAF, and had the dist. out at some point. Sounds to me timeing. Maybe dist off a tooth or two. What are your opinions, and also were can i find the specs on this motor. Thank you

SR Speed Signal Question

I have a Redtop SR20DET in my 1996 240SX with ABS & VLSD. If my speed sensor is not hooked up would it cause the engine to idle rough I have just finished swapping over the motor and I am only getting signal to two injectors. I have spark on all four coilpacks and crank angle sensor has been set the correct way with valve cover off. The only thing I can think of is that I don't have the two plugs connected from the lower harness. The speed sensor and the reverse lights. Maybe they complete a circut that sends signal to the injectors. Or if that is not it my computer might be messed up Does anyone know where I should look I will get under the car today and connect the two plugs on the lower harness and see if that works. I just wanted to know if anyone knew if that had anything to do with not getting signal to the injectors. Thanks,

redtop SR condensor fan relay control wiring

On a redtop SR engine, i noticed the ECU does not have wires for the low/high speed fan relay. All other ecu's, KA and s14 blacktops control the condensor fan through the ECU. When engine temp reaches a certain point, the ECU will trigger the ground for either the low or high speed fan relay. My question is, on the JDM s13 cars with redtop engine, what triggers the condensor fan when the engine reaches above 200 F

Long story short I wrecked my s14 and put my sr into my new s13. I Wired up the harness. Now its turns but itsnt kicking over. It is acting like the cas is not set. The thing is that I had the car running the best it ever has been when I wrecked it. I am getting fuel pressure. Spark (I will check again). It turns over but just doesnt want to start. I have voltage in all the places it should be. I grounded the s*** of the engine. All connections are good. Is it possible for the timing to get 180 out from the wreck I hit a phone poll going like 25 roughly but it totalled from no front end supports but the engine is fine. Nothing broke it just cut my belts.

Don't let a $2 part leave you on the side of the road.

I was pulling onto the highway this evening, and matted the pedal. I accelerate, hit 14 psi, and quickly merge into traffic and into the left lane passing several cars. Then I hear a loud "pop" and my engine starts to sputter and run like a$$. I immediately know that one of my intercooler pipes had popped off, since it had happened once before, right after I did the swap. Anyway, the hose clamp for my blitz bov hot-pipe was bowed on the band slits that act as threads, and would no longer tighten enough (I took this clamp from my old arc fmic kit). Anyway I get it semi tight and being careful not to boost the engine, drive to the parts store to get a new clamp. Since I'm going to at some point, install the gt2871r turbo, and increase the boost, I bought through the nico group buy, it's a solid choice in my mind to upgrade to band clamps which is a much better design. Just curious if anyody else has had this issue with hose clamps that are supplied with most fmic kits, especially at higher boost pressure. Or how many people have never had an issue at 14psi+ boostI have a blitz lm fmic installed now, and using the provided hose clamps, not that it really matters. I'm just going to replace all the hose clamps with band clamps, since it's worth the money IMO to not have to pull over on the side of the road on a cold, rainy night. Just my $.02...

SR smoke :/

I recently did an Sr swap in my s13 and ever so often it will wmoke a lil bit and ever so often it will smoke a lot. The guy that did my swap told me that it was because of my upgraded fuel pump. The smoke is white not black. It smokes real bad tonigh after I let it idle for like 7 min. I thought it could be the head gasket but now am wondering if it's extra condensation in the exhaust smoking up (white smoke=water). The white smoke is what confuses me the most. If anyone has any idea plz throw it my way! Thanx!

Is there a way i can check the head to confirm how much was actually taken off

De-sludge help and higher than normal boost

So I pulled the valve cover in my newly aquirred s13 today to set the cam angle sensor only to find that the entire valvetrain was NASTY!!!! Obviously the previous owner did NOT regularly change the oil. Anyone have any ideas on getting it cleaned up shy of pulling the head Also I hooked up my boost gauge and noticed i was boosting 11psi. I have no boost controler hooked up but am runnin a 3in downpipe, cat and exhaust. Could that be causing the higher than stock boost also is it safe It's a bone stock redtop even using the stock side mount.

Obviously the previous owner did NOT regularly change the oil. Anyone have any ideas on getting it cleaned up shy of pulling the head? Also I hooked up my boost gauge and noticed i was boosting 11psi. I have no boost controler hooked up but am runnin a 3in downpipe, cat and exhaust. Could that be causing the higher than stock boost? also is it safe? It's a bone stock redtop even using the stock side mount.

sr20 starter problem

this may have been covered before but i can't find any topics with the same problem just lurking around so i made an account finally.so heres the problem, my starter went out on me after about 1 year after i finished my sr20det swap. so i ordered a new one and installed it and it worked fine for about 4 days and today at work the car wouldn't start. after the second time i tried to start the car the starter just started spinning freely without even turning the key. so i disconnected the battery so i could check all the wiring and everything looked fine so i connected the battery again and it just started spinning as soon as i connected the battery. so i tried hitting it with a rubber mallet thinking maybe it was stuck or something and nothing happened still just spins freely. does anyone know what could be wrong, did i mess up the wiring, does the starter have another ground besides the little black connector on the starteroh and if it helps i did a rear mounted battery in the hatch and just ran a new power wire along with the hold power wire on the starter

T fitting on the valve cover (Blowby)

the past few days i have been fighting with the fitting to stay in place. every-time i pop my hood it is almost ready to fall out. it has completely come out before. i have just pushed it back in place. i was thinking it could be blowby. my car doesnt smoke at all or act any different than normal. my AFR's are sort of normal. under boost they are at 11.8 like normal but coming back down to idle it will go to 14-15 then jump to 16.5 then back to the normal 14.7-15.2 at idle. just for that split second. and i noticed at idle my vacuum will be at 19-20 instead of 18-19. maybe im just paranoid about all of this. but why is that fitting not staying in place how far should it be pushed in should i tap it in with a hammer im going to pull off my valve cover tomorrow to check everything out and remove my timing chain guide (ive been lazy and have a reason to do it now haha). thanks guys

Question about sensors and rattling

Hopefully someone will help me with a question I have about my S14 Sr20det swap, it is S14 black top. Well recently I replaced the oil pump and that was a pita because the motor was in the car. Anyway, I went thru everything even manually priming the pump. I used 10w30 Royal purple for new fluid all synthetic. I put an new nissan oil filter on the car. Well, upon starting the car for the first time I heard a rattle coming from the engine. Also, the oil light stays on in the dash. I have not revved the motor, nor have I let it get to temprature. So I investigated and noticed the sound was coming from the front cover above the oil pump. To me it sounds like the chain is rubbing or something. So I figured I need to go thru an get a new chain tentioner. Now does this sound like the proper thing to do Or is there something else I should look at before replacing that Previously to the install there was no such noise. I set the timing on the motor according to what I should. I set the crank pulley to the 2nd mark and the cam dimples to the grey chainlinks. Then I installed the CAS where the colored dimple lined up with the dent in the shaft of it when pushed into place. So, timing should be at stock. So with this info please let me know if you have any suggestions. I need to know about this oil sending unit also. [IMG][/IMG] I also have a Greddy Emanage Blue. Which is hooked to the ECU. I am guessing these are previously installed sensors but I really don't know which ones. So if someone could maybe help me figure it out I would appreciate it.
hello everyone, My name is Marvin and I just got my first 240. I traded my turbo civic hatch for the 240. Car came with a blown sr, another blown sr, and a bunch of other stuff. Since the sr in the car was already blown i decided to go ahead and a simple rebuild, and now its turned out to be a little more then what i expected.Parts list:87mm cp pistonsmanley rodsfull rotating assembly balance and blueprintarp head studscomplete head jobbc springs and retainershks 272 step2 camsisis intake manifold550 cc injectors Thats it for now, the engine is machine shop getting put back together. The things left are turbo and ecu. My short term goal is 400 rwhp. As of right now I am still trying to decided on what turbo to go with. Choices are fp's 20g, gt2871r with .84 housing, or maybe a sc61. The car will be used for drag racing. What turbo would you guys recommend using. Also the car came with a enthalpy ecu.

z32 maf/safc2 question

just wanted a specific question answered, if anybody has one.I bought my s13 with a sohc maf in the car. The car was having problems under full throttle at about 5 lbs of boost, the car would break up and backfire alot. I was told by the shop, ILLGarage that it was most likely a bad maf and to upgrade to a z32.So i got a z32 maf. installed it. now the car doesnt even idle propery. it runs super rough and SUPER RICH. anywhere from 7.5 to 12 on my wideband. im wondering what i need to do to get this car running Do i just need to tune with the safc2 to set maf voltage and afr or did i uncover more issuesthanks in advance!

Turbo removal

I notice my turbo had an exhaust leak after a week of the sr swap so I need to remove the whole thing because I can't get to some bolts. I was reading about the whole exhaust manifold turbo removal and it state you should drain the oil and coolant. If I don't drain my fluid will it leak a lot from the turbo where the lines connect

Holset H1c exhaust housing.

I just bought a Holset H1c turbo for my SR20 slow future build. I was looking at the turbo and the housing looks kind of big for what I'm looking for. I was thinking about buying a smaller housing. I'm not sure if it is a 22cm or 18 cm housing. Should I go for a 14cm or 12cm housing instead of the larger housingThanks.

Im going to be getting a tomei oil pan soon for the sr, however the stock sway bar is already nearly touching the stock sr pan and it may even hit while driving and hitting bumps etc. ( i havent driven the car since its not running yet..)A friend of mine whose car is at about the same height as mine has the Greddy oil pan on his sr and his stock sway bar hits the pan alot he said although his car is not daily driven this still bothers me. I dont want to have a nice pan get bashed up because of the sway bar. Is there a sway bar or custom end links for the stock sway bar that i could purcase to keep the bar further away from the pan I will try to get some pictures up but im pretty sure you can visualize what im talking about.

my charge pipe thats connected to my maf sensor blew off yeaterday, when i was driving, the car shut off i popped the hood, and saw that not only did the pipe blow off but the wires to the connecter came out as well, So then i put the wires back in, reconected installed brand new ngk-r bkr7e spark plugs started it up and it appeared to run fine, i drove it up the street not hitting boost, came back, parked it let it sit for about an hour , went to go drive it again and when i start it the idle is low, and sputters, like theres a missfire or somthing any suggestions on what may have caused this , what should the spark plugs be gapped too
