CA Smoking

Ok so if you saw our previous thread the, we are doing much better now. The Guys we got the motor from are actually helping us and given us a lot of support. So now we have the motor in and it runs great, strong and no power problems, but when we first start it up we are ok, but after we have been running it some it starts to smoke, and it smells and looks like oil smoke. I noticed a lot of oil built up in the exhaust valve cover breather hose, so we put a diy catch can in it and it is still smoking. So Do you think it is coming off the intake side I'm just so confused cause it is after it has been running for awhile. Another possibilty is maybe we have to heavy of an oil so does anyone reccomend a weight Thanks for any help!!!

Stranded... hard start after NOT

has anyone had this problem or know what could be causing it the motor will have a hard time starting up after it's been driven after i stop somewhere. for an example, i'll go to the gas station to get gas, i let it idle for a bit then i turn it off, pump gas, buy smokes or whatever. then it won't start again... i've checked the timing on the motor and it's spot on... i've redone the ignition time to 10* (i've read from somewhere that that's what it's supposed to be for the jdm motors and 15* for the edm motors) but i've set it at 15* too... but same problem.i had purchased another cas, cuz i thought my original one was faulty. but the same thing...i've also read on here to clean the aac vavle, it helped on cold starts but still did not solve the other problem.i've changed the spark plugs and again nothing... i do have a wideband, but i just installed it recently and have not ran it with it on. it'll start when it sits for a while, but the moment i turn it off and try to start it up again. it just tries to turn over but won't.oh yeah, i do have added ground wires to the intake manifold and block. if that makes a difference well any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

How many PSI do you think i can get away with

So after a few trips to the dragstrip and may nights sitting infront of the computer (and laptop) figuring out NISTune, i think i have finally got things working right. Shes boosting GREAT now! Currently i am pushing 20 PSI with my GT2871R .86 a/r. I have 550cc injectors, a Z32 MAF, and 3" outlet, downpipe and testpipe ( 2 1/2 HKS exhaust however). Engine was built using ACL Calico coated rod and main bearings, Cometic MLS head gasket, and ARP head studs and main studs. AFRs dip down to 10:1 on full boost right now, without ANY knock at all. Wondering, based on this setup, do you think i could get this turbo to 25 PSI safely Maybe even higherI might be trying the track again tomorrow night, all by myself this time, seeing as i still have the slicks on the back. Just wondering if anyone has any warnings about pushing it to 25 pounds of boost. Last time at the track, i couldnt get out of the 16's. Turns out my K value, which i adjusted using the wideband, was still severly out of whack. So the guy i work with who has a 69 Chevelle (350 small block) ran low 14's all night and the smack talk was merciless the next day.

ok heres the story. my car was broken into last week and the list of things that were stolen are: afc neo, hks evc IV boost controller, hks turbo timer, aem wideband, all of my greddy gauges, nismo titanium gt shift knob, pioneer navi flip up, jl audio w7 subs and amp, and they attempted to steal my kouki taillights. My problem is i have full coverage on my car and the insurance guy told me that because the list of things that were stolen costs so much that they might total my car out and ill be damned if they take my ca and other goodies with it. What i need is a ka idc if its blown or not, single cam or not. i just need something to place in there to make them think they are getting a complete car. someone local would be preferred seeing as how they are coming monday to look at the car to decide whether or not they are going to total it.Thanks in advance,Zach

Timing belt rubbing problem!! please help!

So i swapped this ca18det into my s13 and i just got it running and the only problem is that the timing belt is rubbing on the timing belt cover. I have adjusted the belt countless times and putting it very far back on the pulleys and tensioners but for some reason after about a min of it running, it suddenly would rub against the timing belt cover again i don't really know what i have been doing wrong. The belt is brand new. Please help me as i have been waiting to drive this car for so long but i still can't because this problem is holding me back!

Gas lady put 87 octane in my car! What to do

I went to a gas station that isn't self serve and the lady accidentally put 87 in my car. I got 12 dollars worth. I drove the car home and it drove alright but it was bogging down a bit. What should I do I have a few options. I could 1. Drain the gas and fill it back up with 932. Put in some octane booster3. Petro express sells 100 octane gas I could equal it out.4. Fill it up with 93. (Its at a quarter tank.)

Trying for the track again tomorrow night

I know, i know: its been a while since ive posted....Last Wednesday a couple of us from work were going to go to Gulfport to hit the dragstrip. I borrowed a pair of drag radial slicks for my coupe (245/45R16) and was ready. I had the laptop with my NISTUNE ready to go, wideband working and datalogging, electronic boost controller ready. I thought i was SET. I even worked on smoking the tires up behind the shop before we left. But apparently i overlooked a burnt and melted electric radiator fan fuse, which caused me to overheat even before i left town. Unfortunately i did not realise it until i was on the interstate. Long story short (too late!), car broke down just inside Mississippi and i had to be towed home.Well, after fixing the fuse holder and getting the fans working properly again, i aparently killed yet another ignition coil (i had just replaced the #3 about a month ago). So i went ahead and ordered 3 new ones, so i have a complete set of 4 brand new ignition coils. Ive now got those installed, regapped all the plugs to right around .015" at the advice of a guy who ran 24PSI on a MKIV Supra twin turbo. He says my "wall" i seem to be hitting at high RPM/high boost might be the 20 pounds blowing out the spark. So everything is buttoned up and i think im finally ready to get this thing out to the track. So far, my best time has been 14.9 at 100MPH. But i was on bald street tires launcing from idle to avoid wheel spin. Now i have some slicks so i can launch a LOT harder. Seriously, i HOPE to get into the 12's!!!!Wish me luck!!!JasonBTW, CA18DET w/ GT2871R .86 a/r, Z32 MAF, 550cc injectors, NISTUNE, and other standard bolt ons.

ABS doesn't work after CA swap.

I have a 91 Super Hicas s13 with a ca18det swap. Ever since I did the swap the ABS hasn't been working and the ABS dash light is on. I don't mind not having abs, but the winter is coming and it did save me quite a few times last winter so I'd prefer to have it. The connector for the front passenger side abs sensor plugs into the ca engine harness. Could there be a problem there Is there any extra wiring that I'd have to do with this

grayish/black smoke in higher RPM range.

Well my CA's been in my car for a few months now, and it's finally been running somewhat decent for about a month. The only problem I'm having now is that in the higher RPMs (like while getting onto highways, and taking off quickly in general) it will blow grayish/black smoke. It only does it in under those conditoins. No smoke at all on start up, idle, or during normal cruising RPMs. Is this a sign of running richHeres some more info and mods done to the car that may help:Mods:ca18det swapsr T25 turboFMICHKS BOV (vented to atmosphere)K&N filter3" downpipe, test pipe, and cat-backoil catch can-I never upgraded the fuel system, I still have the oem fuel pump and filter that was in the car.-I am running the car at stock boost (7 psi)-Vacuum gauge reads around 20 hg while idling-Sometimes the car will idle rough, between 700-900rpm while warm-just changed the spark plugs, old plugs showed signs of rich conditions-just changed the o2 sensor-the ECU gives me code 55I can't think of anything else that might help out... I'll add stuff if I come up with anything new. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

We are stuck or screwed NEED HELP

OK so it all started one evening, my friend hydrolocked his sohc. Well it still runs, but has a bum valve and low compression on the number four. So we figured the only solution possible. CA18DET ftw you know. Ok so now we order the motor. We played the waiting game for a week and then the weekend because they didnt deliver on saturdays. So now here we go Monday it shows up! We are so excited and then all of a sudden, it was like unwrapping a slughtered body wrapped up in plastic. The transmission was locked up in gear, and will not come out, the harness was cut off in the most critical of spots, the coil cover had hole knocked in it, the mass air flow sensor was missing, and the intercooler they sent was for a SR. So now we are in a battle almost with this company who shall remain nameless (at least until they actually screw us), and while we are waiting on parts we are wondering if there are any things we can do to go ahead and get this thing in and running. The main thing is obviously the MAF and transmission. So I guess I want to know if there is another maf we can use and can you not mate the ka tranny to the ca bell, and if so how hard is it

How to make a KA24DE Alternator work on CA18DET

This is actually quite a simple one and I am surprised that no one has done this yet. All you have to do, is remove the front half of the KA24DE Alternator, and replace it with the front half of the CA18DET Alternator.the bracket on the KA is about 1 inch too short for the holes to line up. Swapping the basket off the KA, worked like a charm for me!

i'm currently finishing up the ca18det swap in my 74 b210. i have not started the engine yet. i have the fuel system all hook up but ran into snag. the first one is that i think i got the wrong fuel pump. the pump i got flows 43 gallons per hour. this equates to about 163 liters per hour. is this engough to feed my ca does any body know how much the stock one flowsthe second problem is that when i was checking to see if the there where any leaks i noticed that the fuel circulates through the lines and gets to the fuel rail just fine but it does not stop there and hold pressure. i know this becuase if i put some pliers and crush the return line it begins to hold pressure. is this normal shouldn't the regulator hold the fuel pressure. is my regulator bad or will the regulator start to work when it starts to get vacuum. any ideas

unexpected find..

I recently took the insurance off the car for the winter and started taking the intake manifold off the other day to take out the butterfly valve, install the KADE TB, and simply the cooling lines underneath the manifold.Upon inspection, i realized there was ALOT of gunk build up around the valves, so instead of getting NIStune and a wideband, it looks like i'll be getting some ARP studs, replacing the head gasket, and getting the head milled and cleaned up. (Pics will be soon)Just a few questions though, in the "oil catch can thread" it says to use a SR20 baffle box between the rear port on the intake valve cover and the pipe that it connects too underneath it correct and I can use a regular catch can with steel wool in place of thatAlso, the ARP studs i want are the 202-4302 and NOT the 202-4702. I have a JDM CA18DET.Float, I think i remember you saying something about thermo-gaskets for the intake manifold somewhere awhile back, any info on that or if I could pick some upWoah sorry for the story guys lol

Stock mani and turbo cracked!

So for the past 2-3 months I've been trying to get my car to run, if it wasn't my rear caliper going bad something else would come up. I have a stock S13 200sx with a c18det from factory. When I bought it last year I did a few things here and there: FMIC, walbro, Tanabe coil overs, Fuel pressure gauge and z32 fuel filter. So I drove the car here and there cause I have a GS300 that I decided to drive instead since driving here in Germany requires high speed and I didn't want to push the little CA 100mph steadily down the autobahn. Anyhow, my car would start hesitating like when you have a vacuum leak. It would only happen when lets say I was on 4th gear idling below 2500rpm, i would then have to down shift and hit the gas. I concluded that my turbo was bad. So I take out my turbo, replace it with a t28 put it on my car, take off the mani again cause the t28 I had seems too worn out and at this point I noticed the STOCK MANIFOLD was cracked inside and had a few hairline cracks outside as well, you really can't notice them but I was able to spot them by following the cracks from inside, i could also see black dust around the cracks, which means it leaked from there! I then went to the garage and noticed the t25 exhaust part was cracked as well. all this happened in a two day span, before this my car hadn't been moved due to caliper problems.I tried looking for a stock manifold, but couldn't find one at a decent price. I didn't want to pay $100 for a used manifold without me physically seen it, so I bought a tubular manifold (it hasn't arrived yet) to be in the safe side.I've read post that say you shouldn't use a tubular manifold unless you grow out of the stock one first, and that I believe is around 300bhp. (correct me if am wrong) with that being said, will it be really that detrimental to my set up if I run the tubular manifold Also, can I replace the exhaust housing from the t25 with a t28 housing the t25 actually has no play and spins free as a bird and I have a spare t28 housing I can use. (NO I CAN NOT, THE T28 HOUSING IS TOO BIG, JUST CHECKED!)Thanks for reading guys and hope I can get some good feedback. Take care!AJ

I then went to the garage and noticed the t25 exhaust part was cracked as well. all this happened in a two day span, before this my car hadn't been moved due to caliper problems.
I tried looking for a stock manifold, but couldn't find one at a decent price. I didn't want to pay $100 for a used manifold without me physically seen it, so I bought a tubular manifold (it hasn't arrived yet) to be in the safe side.
I've read post that say you shouldn't use a tubular manifold unless you grow out of the stock one first, and that I believe is around 300bhp. (correct me if am wrong) with that being said, will it be really that detrimental to my set up if I run the tubular manifold?
Also, can I replace the exhaust housing from the t25 with a t28 housing? the t25 actually has no play and spins free as a bird and I have a spare t28 housing I can use. (NO I CAN NOT, THE T28 HOUSING IS TOO BIG, JUST CHECKED!)
Thanks for reading guys and hope I can get some good feedback. Take care!
AJ

Just wanted to extend my gratitude to all you guys out there. I've spent about a year tearing down, rebuilding, installing, wiring, and fixing my ca. Its been a b****. But, thankfully, nico has a wonderful forum and some great ca18 experts. You may not recognize me, because I really havent posted much. The miracle of the search button, previous posts and the knowledge of Dee, Mike, Sean, and Ryan that is on the CA stickies had all the info I needed. No real point to this, just finished the final little stuff today, and took my 13 for a spin around the block and it made me happy instead of making me bang my head on the steering wheel for once.

oh the joy

so, I decided to swap back to the stock cast iron turbo manifold on my setup. I like that 1/4 and 2/3 runners are paired, and therefore energy at turbine wheel per engine revolution theoretically should be greater. Im using the same turbo as before, 2871R / 63hotside / 3" inlet. With the XS power tubular manifold I could hold actuator pressure to 25 psi no overboosting issues. Now with the stock turbo manifold, Im having issues where I absolutly cannot control boost. To simplify diagnosing the problem, I physically removed the actuator arm off the wastegate flapper and it still makes 25+ psi slowy no problem but directly related to engine RPM. I have a few options, both of which I think will get me nowhere. -I have an 86 hotside kicking around....I could install that, but I think its just going to take longer to overboost -Port the hole in the turbine housing as big as I can go with a fair amount of overlap still being provided by the flapper. what I am thinking of doing is installing ca18de camshafts or ca18det cams to bump VE down a bit. Right now I have tomei 256 cams in the head. Theoretically they are going to provide the turbine with more energy. anybody using a stock cast iron turbo manifold with an upgraded turbocharger pleasse chime in.

replacing fuel injectors

Hi everyone.I think I know how to do this but I just want to make sure since I've broken things in the past because I didn't know what I was doing and it's really not fun.Anyway, I did RTFM and it says to remove the "intake manifold stay." What's that mean As far as I can tell, all I need to do to be able to remove the fuel rail is remove these two parts and of course the bolts. Am I missing anything Also, I got a set of 2g DSM 450 injectors. I read the installation guide in the FAQs, anything else I should know Thanks,Darian

The 4 bolt spacer thing behind where the oil filter screws onto........mine is leaking. Is there a gasket between it and the block If so, anyone have a part number for the gasket Also, on my old ca18et.....it had the 4 bolt holes, but no spacer.....the oil filter screwed directly against the block. Can the spacer on the ca18det be taken off, and the filter screw on against the block like the ca-etHere's a pic of my ca-et block....

Anyway, is it just me or is taking the exaust manifold off a PITA Those last two bolts tucked down on the bottem near the turbo suck! Anyway, just venting. I've replaced the turbo before whilst the engine was out, so I know how to do it but was wondering if anyone has any tricks to get to those little bastards better

Car is almost impossible to cold start

So my car's recently started playing this game with me after installing the FMIC that it just does not want to start when its been sitting over night. I will crank for car for no less than 10 minutes to get it to finally stay running. It will sputter and cough inbetween when I first turn the starter and when it actually stays running. I've replaced the TPS and cleaned the IAC out (was full of oil, turbo blew from previous owner and everything got coated badly). I dont have a vac leak (i dont think anyway) because the car will hold a nice steady idle, but it will drop boost a tiny bit (about 1 pound) from when it initially comes into boost until redline. I have the car tuned with an SAFC-1 also. The FMIC uses all the stock SMIC piping but it runs across the front of the car infront of the crashbar (NO BUMPER CUTTING FTW!). Any help on what I can do to start tracking this down would be awesome!
