long story short, i'm in the left lane of a 3 lane road, there is a cop in front of me, we're at a red light, light hits green, we pass the intersection, a car coming out of the gas station to the right (once you pass intersection) hits 2 girls J-Walking, the cop in front of me slams his breaks, i slam mine, but still slide into the cops rear

i don't get cited for anything regarding distance, but only "failure to yield to an emergency vehicle" LAWLLWLWLALWLALLAWWWWLLL

i have to come out of pocket for this, i just want an estimate to help me sleep the coming nights, looks like new hood, 2 headlights, front bumper?

car still runs perfect just like before the incident

i walked away without a scratch, but my car looks battered, the cop's crown vic just looked like it was key'd but he went unconscious and was taken away in a stretcher

it's either you or your car, infiniti goes with you ;)

Wow what a stroke of bad luck! Sorry man. I would estimate you're in the 6-7000 range of cost to repair. Perhaps you could find a used parts lot and see if these parts can be salvaged. Did any bags go off inside? Those are approximately $1000 for just the wheel. Again used parts lot there may be some in other states too.

I think msvara is about right:
assuming you don't have underbody/frame damage

1. lots of people do the front bumper swap to the "08 version for, if I recall correctly, about 2-3 grand
2. headlights: sport ones cost a bit more (used) about $500-600/each on Fleabay
3. hood: about $700-800 with all the extra bits, insulating under pad, seals, clips, etc. (assuming you don't reuse any extra pieces)

about $4000-5000 + labor

I'd talk to a lawyer. Anyone who slams on their brakes in traffic (like that cop did) should be at fault or share the blame. Don't let them bully you!!!

You know, I've had some pretty bad days. An accident such as this wouldn't be considered one of my worst days.

Just saying, something to think about.

Also, If for some reason you find that you will be getting 08+ front bumper, please sell us your front lip!

Why doesn't insurance pay for it? Knowing the circumstances of the pedestrians getting hit in front of the cop car, and the chain of events that happened quickly after, why would you have to deal with all of this? Things aren't adding up.

Wow, that's really unlucky. But at the risk of sounding like an a**, with a cop in front, did you not follow him with the "2 second" rule? Not only that, I'm surprised you two were able to pick up as much speed to cause your front end to smash in like that!

I hope you'll come out OK aside from the repair damages, knocking a COP unconscious of all people just makes it look even worse than it has to be! But yes unless you're driving with only liablity insurance, why wouldn't your insurance cover this? I learned that lesson 2 months ago and will always make sure to have comp/collision from now on!

Hitting a police cruiser just looks bad and when you report the accident to insurance they want the police report. I would be in the same predicament as the OP if I hit a cop on duty.

only based on the fact that i didn't have collision/comprehensive, liability only :/

yeah i hear you man, the light had just hit green, so everyone was still a bit clustered, including the 2 cars behind me who also collided, but yeah i definitely could have done a better job at this, but i do remember a lot of slide time

is it weird that no airbags went off?

sorry to hear about your accident but you were not hurt, why did the car hit the 2 pedestrians? For an average I have a 06 m35 in blue, I had to replace 1 headlight, the front driver side fender, and the front bumper, the estimate to my insurance agency was around 3200 dollars. I know the headlight alone was 800, the fender was like 600, and the front bumper was another 600 or 700. the rest was labor.

Hello, sorry to hear about your damage glad you are ok, the prices vary used , new also if you are handy then doing the work yourself isnt that hard minus the hood and paint job. Parts you can get for under $3000 paint job depends anywhere from 200-400 for bumper and 400-800 hood . Installing the headlights bumper and grilles should be a no problem for a diy, the hood might need to be installed proffesionally.

The chain of events didn't cause the cop to crash, so I doubt the insurance will even consider "chain of events" regardless of anything. Second, at the end of the day, regardless of anything, running into someones back without someone pushing you...which would be the chain of events that would be considered by an insurance company...will always be your fault. Especially following close enough at speeds to cause damage like that. (Not blaming the op for anything, just a general statement to how most insurance companies act)

As far as the "failure to yield to an emergency vehicle", I have never gotten a citation before so I don't know if its a major fine or it goes on your insurance record, but if either happens I would fight it. There is no way you could "yield" being behind him in a situation like that.

Hope everything works out for you.
