Hi Guys, im new here and new to this platform. Today i was driving and the Battery and the brake light came on at the same time. Even after shutting down the engine and restarting the light still remains on, what could be causing this ? I was driving mildly, shifting at 4500 in 2nd and 3rd gear as the boost kicked in. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanx Derrick, after doing alittle searching i went and just checked the fuses and they all seemed to be ok. ill check the wires next, im not that mechanically inclined, so ill do my best to trace the wires and see if they could be the problem.

Hmmm, im not too happy about that, i just checked this one wire i could see, going to the alternator, it has a grey clip, with red cap over it. I check it and it seems pretty secure. I just bought the car 3 days ago, not looking forward to spending money on it already.

I had a buddy give the car a brief look over tonight, all fuses and connections were ok, the battery was only putting out 11v's and he did say the alternator was bad, but while driving home, for that last 3 miles the battery and the brake light went off.

What exactly does this mean ?, Could it have been some sort of glitch ? Or is it just a warning sign that the Alternator is going but not gone yet ?

Both lights went off since the last time i posted, but reappeared last night. I tried testing it by turning the motor on and pulling the positive terminal off the battery and the car kept running, so im thinking that since the car kept running that the alternator is still charging right ???? I want to get it checked at advanced auto, but fear that it might die on my way there. What u guys think ?

maybe your alternator is getting weak or your battery is not holding a full charge. if you can get it to an autoparts store do it see if your battery or alternator are still in good working order

Check the ground on the alternator. Should be a black wire bolted on the back side of the alternator. If its loose or disconnected it could be causing your intermitent problem. Also check your main battery ground is tight, fromt he battery to intake manifold.

I got these two lights one night on a road trip. My alternator belt broke. I believe these lights indicate that the alternator is not charging to the required ~12-14v. Since you said you tested the alternator with the car running and it showed 11v, my guess is that your alternator is on the way out.

My advice (for what it's worth) is to replace the alt as soon as possible and save yourself the money you'll spend on a wrecker when it finally does go out on you.

Good luck to you.

Edit: That is, of course, unless your alt connections are loose, as nissans13240sx said.

Yesterday the battery and the brake light came on again, this time i was close to a advance auto, pulled in got the battery and alternator checked. They hooked up the machine and the readout came back as ..... battery good but needs to be recharged and there was no volts from the charging system.

I pulled the battery out for them to charge it, but after a few minutes they informed me that the battery was not taking a charge and was no good. The attendant informed me that there could be some sort of a short in the battery itself, and that could prevent the battery from recharging and causing the lights in the dash.

I purchased a new battery, installed it, and cranked the engine up and no lights, both battery and brake lights are off. Been driving for a day now and the lights have not reappeared. :D :D

reason i ask is cuz i had the same problem. i know my car is an s13, but every thing in my car is out of a 95 s14.. i would be driving and the brake light and batter light would come on.. i though it had something to do with snow getting in my wiring, but that proves wrong considering you live in florida.. i even had the ticking noise under the dash, which i found out was a relay that was freakin out on me..

check your alternator and battery .most autoparts stores have the equipment to check them .if either are bad they can tell you. and you dont need to take them out of your car to test them

Dude i had that same F..king clicking sound, but it only lasted a day..... just weird. Well it could be the wiring, or it could be the alternator, or it could be a faulty battery. Its best to get everything checked in detail to ensure u don't spend any unnecessary money. I was ready to buy an alternator when it was just a battery that was at fault.

yeah.. i had a really annoying clicking noise, it was a relay that freaked out on me for some reason, and then right after that i had a wierd buzzing noise, but that was a wire gone bad on my remote start system..

MORE UPDATES !!!! Well after installing the new battery, the Brake and Battery lights came back on. So i decided to just go ahead and replace the alternator. I bought a 97 Nissan Quest alternator, and did some minor modifications to make it fit. After installing cranked the car up, and guess what...........Brake and Battery were still on WTF!!!!!.

With the car still running i pulled the negative cable off the battery terminal and it kept running, so that means the alternator is charging, and suprisingly the battery and brake light went off. I put the terminal back unto the battery and the car labored alittle and the lights came back on again WTF!!!. So what could be the problem ??? I started checking all the wiring and took the fuse box cover off to make sure i had no blown fuses.

All fuses checked out ok, then i noticed something to the left of the fuse box. The lead running from the alternator to the fuse box was heavily corroded, loose, and was slightly melted. So it appeared the loose lead was shorting out, and maybe killed my battery and alternator.

I cleaned it up and tightened the bolt to secure it properly to the fusebox, and both lights went off. Ive been driving 2 days now and no problems. Hopefully this has finally solved this problem, and now i can redirect money to buy some mods
