I have used a 'Magnetic Drain Plug' on my Versa, since the first change. When I take it out, I can see what metal filings the thing has picked up since the last change.

The cleanest it has been is with Penzol Platinum Synthetic. I just changed the oil today after using Castrol Snytech, the magnet had a bit more crap on it and it was a very dirty black color, compared to the Penzoil, with that oil it came out with just a light grey smudge that disapeared on the paper towel. I also use a larger Pureone filter than OEM Todays change made me decide that I am going back to Penzoil for the rest of my changes.

the bigger the number the larger the smallest particals will be. so a 5w 30 oil will have no particals smaller then, ummm, 5? (what ever) and none larger than...30.

i have no clue how the numbers are measured or what ever, but yeah

Particles ? Its actually Viscosity.

Quote »The viscosity grade (for example, 5W-30) tells you the oil's thickness, or viscosity. A thin oil has a lower number and flows more easily, while thick oils have a higher number and are more resistant to flow. Water has a very low viscosity -- it is thin and flows easily. Honey has a very high viscosity -- it is thick and gooey.[/quote]1st number is viscosity when oil is cold, second number is when it is hot.

I use Mobil 1 5W30, but I am going to try 0W30 at next oil change.

I use Royal Purple 5w30.

Anyways, was lookin for oil for my Versa one time. I go into PartSource (kinda like Autozone in USA, but in Canada) I ask the fellow behind the counter if they had any 5w30 Royal Purple. He says no and says I can just use 10w30 or any other one they have in stock. He goes on to say "the number doesn't really matter, they are just oil. It's all the same." At which point, I nodded, went "Uh huh...." and walked out.

I feel for you Pal, that loser at the "parts counter" was probaly selling shoes at Sears last week.

I meet them all the time, they look like they should know something, wearing that store vest, but when challenged by a little information on what you are looking for, they give you a blank stare. The only thing he knows about 'Oil' was that his Dad probably did all the changes on the driveway while he was inside playing video games.

Royal Purple is a great oil, but is very hard to find, so I buy Penzoil Platinum at Wal-Mart's in Montana for $22..00 for 4.4 ltrs

Just put in Kendall fully synthetic. Won't change it for 5,000-6,000 miles. 7,000 if we happen to do a lot highway driving, but I doubt it.

I use whatever the dealer puts in it when I get it serviced. Lol.

First number is what I refer to as the "winter" number. Second is when the oil is up to temp. During the summer, in my 240, I usually use Royal Purple 10w40 or 10w50. Winter is 10w30/40.

Whoever said they've been seeing less filings on their magnetic drain plug, here's some news. You'll always get some filings on your first few changes. It's natural wear on the parts. After a while you wont get as much due to natural wear. It really doesnt have a ton to due with the type of oil.

What I said was this...

that with Penzoil Platinum, the magnetic plug had only a slight grey smudge of engine filings, but on Castrol Syntech, it had more filings that were a dark dirty color. Therefore I am going back to Penzoil oil for the rest of my changes.

Of course you get more filings when the engine is new, but I got more filings on the last change with Castrol, than the change before, with Penzoil.

Put in a magnetic drain plug and you actually see for yourself what oil creates the least cuttings.

Without some hard facts to decide on, all we have to go on is each companies propaganda designed to sell their oil.

Longo, there shouldn't be any filings at all after the first or second oil change... some of what you may have seen may have been engine assembly lube, after the first oil change.

Perhaps "filings" is not the right word to describe the debris on the end of the magnet. Filings, cuttings, metalic crap..that's what I got on the first couple of changes...now after 6 Oil Changes what I am getting is a metalic powder With the Castrol, there was more...'metalic powder' and it was gunky looking. With Penzoil Platinum it was just a slight grey, 'smudge'

The magnet is very strong, you have to fight it to get it past the treads on the way in and out as it wants grab the oil pan and hang on.

The strong magnetic pull draws any metalic substance in the oil toward it no matter how small when the car is turned off, it captures it there and won't let it re-circulate through the engine on the next start up.

(and if you were right about no metalic debris in the engine oil, then that would mean they would never wear out.)

why are you wasting your money? If I am not mistaken, Royal Purple is quite expensive and typically sees service in more high performance engines (hate to break the news that the Versa engine is not high performance).

Any conventional oil will be just fine for 5 k miles and synthetic for 7.5 to 10k. I sure hope you are stretching to 10 k with that Royal Purple. I work for a major oil company and have background in what our testing indicates.

I use only the finest oils in my Versa. Filippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It's expensive, so it must be the best... right?

Actually, I've been using Mobil synthetic oil in mine.

Any leftover from the bottle can then be used in your spaghetti sauce.
