RWD vehicle, low weight, rev-happy engine. Can't say I'm surprised.

Why do these idiots all drift into utility poles? :rotfl :lolling:

They never drift off bridges, into lawns, or off cliffs. It's ALWAYS utility poles.

You beat me to the post! I read on FT86 club where the guy came forth. Most people on the forum were kind to him. He said he had a civic before. The accident happened when he was riding with a coworker to lunch, turned off traction control and pushed it like he used to with his civic on a familiar turn. The only thing is he isn't driving a FWD car anymore. Everyone is blaming him for the impending rise in insurance costs.

God the insurance rates on these things are going to be astronomical in about a year.

Yup. I called it way back in Seth's buying a BRZ thread. We will see it far more with the Scion thanks to the buyer demographic (and hence friendly price point) and its very neutral handling characteristics.

All those wannabe Takumis are going to end up like Iketani instead. :chuckle:

Reading about some idiot who can barely drive turning off his traction control then crashing is not surprising. What concerns me when enough of them do it (and we all know they will do it), a lawyer will inevitably suggest suing Toyota/Subaru for making it too easy to turn off those electonic nannies.

I'm kind of surprised we haven't heard about it happening on test drives.

I would think the insurance rates are already sky high on those as it is, can they get higher?

Hmmm. I would be more surprised if we did hear about it during one of their test drives. I imagine most new FRS/BRZ that arrive at the dealerships are pre-sold, and even if there was one set aside for test drives, I would think a salesman would be riding shotgun to prevent the customer from doing something dumb.

Not sure how this POS with the rubber band wind up engine can hurt you, unless you suck. Perhaps people have been nannyteched to the point where a weak a** car like this can bite them. It should be an interesting experiment when I get my 180 back on the road after driving a 50hp minitruck for several years. We'll see if I can keep a faster car with a lighter tail end off the poles.

If these boneheads keep it up they will. They'll cause the price of car payment + insurance to be unaffordable. This might eliminate some of the idiots but not all of them.

I never liked high cost as a countermeasure for keeping out riff-raff. I much prefer natural selection.

Really not surprising when you consider they were releasing promotional videos like this one. Granted, a lot of automakers do this (the current Mercedes cabin fly through with the angry man cornering a city street comes to mind), but when its targeted at a younger demographic what did they expect?

Dam, that was weak as f***. A minitruck can do better than that with 50HP

I'm sneaking them through Florida as kit cars. ICE is looking for Skylines, not Carrys and Hijets! :naughty:

Before we all panic about kids drifting new FRZ/BRZ into poles. Keep in mind, drifting kids don't normally buy brand new cars. So I kinda doubt you're gonna see many beat looking FRZ/BRZ with mismatched wheels and zip ties holding the bumpers on for several years.

^I actually have to disagree with that to an extent. I feel this FRS and BRZ is somewhat aimed at the kids who want to drift but dont know ther first thing about it. Scion has always been a youth targeted market. Throw a couple vids around like the one I posted above, all of a sudden a bunch of young inexperienced drivers get their dream when they graduate high school. "Mommy, Daddy! Look at this cool car, its inexpensive, yet daring enough to get me some play! Can I have it?!?!"

Also keep in mind that drifting kids like you stated above are not normally doing it on public roads. They know better, just like they know not to purchase a brand new car to drift since chances are they are going to bash it into a wall a few times.
