Hello all this is my first post. I am an American soldier stationed in South Korea. I think I found a good deal on a skyline so I have been researching the procedures to import one back to the U.S. I have found so much information and half of it is BS but this site seems to have the best write up so far. I have found the link to the procedures to do the conversians for everything but the obd2 system. My question is: is there a company that I can pay to convert the electronics, or a kit that I can buy to do it myself?

Im not trying to cut corners by not doing my research, I just do not know what to believe and who to trust at this point. I want to import a 96-98 gtr but cant seem to find out how to get past the electronics.

Thank you for your help.
This is a link to the car I'm interested in right now.... I dont know the year on it yet so I'm not sure that this one is an option.

Find out the year. 89's will hit 25 years next year and be possible to get in. That seems suspiciously cheap for a GT-R.

I just spoke with the guy. It's a 92 so from what I have read thats not something I can work with because I want to do this the legal way... I dont want to get into a pissing contest with the government.

Welcome aboard, and many, many thanks for your service.

Unfortunately, the old "urban legend" about US service members being able to bring a car home with them is just that - a legend.

Your best bet is to buy something over there, enjoy it, and pass it along to a fellow soldier when you return stateside. Until the US Gov't pulls its head out and lifts the asinine restrictions on importation, it really becomes a cost-prohibitive proposition for most of the really desirable cars.

I have considered buying one to enjoy and then passing it on and if that is my only option then that is what I will do.

I found the procedures to import a R33 that were released by J.K. Motors are these still accurate to your knowledge? Or has their been legal updates that I havent been able to find yet?

If you want to see what I am talking about as far as what J.K. Motors released I can post a link I just have to find it again, I saved it to me desktop for review.

Sure. We'll have Sean (the importation guru) have a look.

He's probably the foremost expert (anywhere) on JDM vehicle importation and legalization.

Thank you for the fast replies. I know this is a question that is asked a lot but I feel my circumstance is a little different than most.

How do I get in contact with Sean? And what makes him the (the importation guru)? Is this someone who does the importation for a fee, or does he just have a lot of knowledge on the procedure?

He's "tyndago" on here... Feel free to search his posts and send him a PM.

He pops in from time to time (when the question is worth answering).

Wait until its over 25 and no hassles with the DOT. EPA is over 21.

You don't want to mess with OBDII, although...no just dont mess with it. Way too complicated of a system. Whole car system. Plus certification is the issue.

So keep the cars over 25.

I am ex-Military did 6 years in the US Navy.

On a side note..... You can use the AEM trigger wheel the CAS, and run the car using a Chevy ECU...... All of the engine functions will work, but you would have to use some external controllers for VTC (window Switch) and AC controls. You would also spend a good bit of time incorporating the harnesses. This you may consider doing to get a GTST with ODB2 but with the AWD you may need to piggy back the ECU's and isolate the trans controls.
