So, I am working on my heads and I'm wondering if I plan to going with aftermarket intake and exhaust cam gears such as the JUN set... The VTC function will be disabled... Can I just leave the solenoids in place and not connect them? Or can I remove them completely and replace with something else?

Why not just go with the BDE Cam Gears? You retain the use of your VTC so you can have the best of both the RPM ranges.

That's true, but the BDE gears aren't adjustable are they?

The 94+ gears are adjustable, but the 90-93 are not

Good to know! Thank you.

So, nothing on if it would be alright to leave the solenoids in place but, not connecting them to the harness? If I'm not going to use their function...would I still need to swap those little internal pieces from the back of the old camshaft to the new camshaft?

IMO/IME, with stock and small turbo set ups, stock VTC is more effective for maintaining a strong powerband than adjustable gears would be. You'll loose some mid-range power with the deletion of the VTCs.

I am not going stock. I have a built bottom end by Z1, GT675RS turbos and built heads with 270 .385 lift cams.

Well in that case, all bets are off.

The only non VTC heads I know of are the 96 heads, and even then I'm not sure if the cams themselves are different or the heads are different to eliminate the opening at the VTC solenoid.

I don't see any issue with disconnecting them if they aren't being used.

Ok, thank you! I didn't see any issues with unplugging them either. It's more of a clean-up thing though. I am a huge fan of simplifying anything and everything in our engine bays haha. If I can delete them... cool. If not, no worries as they won't really be seen anyway.

I might be thinking incorrectly, but I am at least having a thought.

If you upgrade the cams to the JWT cams or something they end up being 1994+ cams anyway right? That is why they have the adapter for pre 1994 cars with the JWT cams.

So my thinking is...couldn't you use the BDE 94+ Adjustable cam gears, while still retaining the VTC function if you have JWT cams installed?

Yes, if he's using JWT cams.
