i searched and i couldnt find it but if anyone finds this then you can grill me out. here is my problem i got a 350z offered to me. only problem is that the motor is blow and white smoke is coming out. i talked to me uncle whos a nissan dealership technical manager or something like that and he said you cant rebuild the vq35de because it has a aluminum block so the walls or whatever cant be bored out. he said that the whole motor would have to be replaced. does this seem like a project worth taking on? the guy wants 8k for a 03 base model with nav it has 75k miles and i was thinking i can get him down to like 4k or 5k. i was thinking maybe i could get a stocker kit and rebuild the motor that way with new sleevesnot sure that would work any help would be nice

to me a car with a blown motor for the most part isn't worth more than 2-3k

I know your uncle works at nissan, and you trust him.... but you can rebuild any engine. and white smoke sounds like its coolant so its probably just a headgasket, though i don't know why a 74k miles engine would have a bhg. stroker kits are great, but way more expensive than a whole new motor from nissan. But yeah you can rebuild that motor, or replace it for another 03 engine for probably 1-2k at most.

if it was me, and i had 8k budget. I would talk him down to 4k, replace the motor and then sell it for 12k and put that down on a 370z

I think your uncle meant to say that because it's open deck block it can't be over bored. This is only partially true from my understanding, with this engine you can over bore it up one step, alot of times it doesnt need to be bored out, you should be able to re-hone the darn thing and put new rings on the pistons and you should be fine.

The new [since 2002] non lead bearings are touchy and no where near as durable as wider old style babbited alloys. If they are ever exposed to any amount of coolant for even a few minutes budget replacement.

I say talk the guy down as low as he can go, find another stock longblock to throw in it and you can take your time building the old one if you want. Plus you will have an extra transmission laying around if you pick up a complete swap. I saw a 05 complete swap with 32K mi for $2500 on craigslist. ECU, harness, everything.

Good luck!
