What is the difference between the VG and VQ? Which one is better?

The VG series is SOHC or DOHC depending on model. The VG30E (seen in the Maxima GXE 2nd and 3rd gen as well as several nissan trucks) is SOHC and puts out 160hp in base form. The VG30DETT is used in the 300ZX TT. It is DOHC and puts out anywhere from 280-300hp. Again Iron block and aluminum head. The VG30ET was used in the Z31 Turbo and was 205hp. It was the same block and head configuration as the rest of the VG series, timing belt as well. The VQ series is DOHC period. It is anywhere from 190-222hp (VQ30DE-VQ30DE-K) to 255-287hp (VQ35DE). They are both aluminum block with an aluminum head. They have a timing chain instead of a belt. It is used in the Maxima, G35 coupe and Sedan, as well as the 350Z. Both engines have their strengths and weaknesses.

the z31 was VG30E and VG30ET, not DE. the z32 shares its VG30DE with the infiniti J30.

Thank you for explaining. I have another question. I got a 1995 N/A Z and I'm doing a motor swap. Should I get the VG30DETT or a VQ30DETT from the Nissan Gloria and Cedric?

since no one has stated it, the vg30de (twin cam n/a) puts down 220-ish hp depending on appilcation

you mean vq30det from the cedric and gloria.

in any case, you need VG. aftermarket support is what is important.

i doubt you want to rewire the whole car for a completely different engine.

go with a VG30DET from a cima. those are said to be better motors than teh TT versions found in the 300zxtt. someone posted a pic of the intake ports of the two different heads, side by side. you could have fit the DETT intake port inside the DET port and still had room to play inside that thing!

...to combat the inherent lag of the single turbo system.

that may be the case, but the VG30DET would still be the better motor to start with because of this fact. bigger port = more air! although if you look at it another way, i dont think a T3 would necessarily have more lag than 2 T25's. A t3 with 6 cyls worth of air moving thru it vs a t25 with 3 cyls of air moving thru it...... I think they went twin turbo with the 300zx for packaging reasons. as in, they didn't have enough room for and aft to fit the crossover pipe in it. I'd rather have a big single than 2 smalls anyday.

no t22's in any z31s - 84-86 had a T3 (6.8psi), 87-89 had T25 (or was it a T28?) (4psi) but slightly higher compression and made 5 more hp. go figure
