Hey guys,

I just picked up a 04 g35 coupe with a 6mt.

She has a few little issues but nothing major. One of the biggest is that when the car starts and the dash powers on the warning lights for a self test the vdc light does not come on. I can try using the vdc off button but no change. Also when the headlights turn on is the only time the vdc off light cones on. I'm lost the only thing I can think of Is a short behind the dash. Anyone have any ideas? I've tried searching every forum and can't find anything.

Any help is great,

Tj

Only thing I can think of is tracing the wiring to see where the component relationship between VDC and headlights are since turning the headlights on makes the light work. Something is crossed somewhere.

I assume resetting the ECU does nothing?

Hey guys,

Sorry it took me so long to update. But I've got bad news. Turns out a whole bunch of wires are hacked together. From what I can tell is the battery charge light came on and the old owner replaced the alternator. But that didn't fix the light. So they bypassed the gauge cluster in order to ignite the stator in the alternator. They did this because the cluster went bad. That's also why the vdc off light comes on with the operation of the headlights. Also, I found a lot of blue tape? Anyone know if that is factory? Anyone have any advice? Should I get a different cluster and try and put the wires back to factory?

What in the world. That's shady as hell. That blue tape does not look factory. I would get the FSM out and see what wire is supposed to go to where..

Yeah, looks like you will have to reverse-engineer everything and replace the bad components. What a bunch of BS

the FSM would tell you were every wire goes, but that's some shady s***... please make sure your air bags and abs are in working order.

So glad I got ahold of a G that some idiot hasn't had his hands all over. In theory if the Airbag light is *NOT* on, everything should be functioning properly. That's assuming of course that some moron didn't just cut the wire. Short of that, the only way to verify that the SRS systems are working is to have it plugged into Consult and read codes.

I will never buy a newer vehicle that's been modified before.
